Today was just a very good day. Beautiful weather, got my flower boxes up, took an hour long nap, had a good dinner, Penguins won, played some cards with friends, then had a nice online chat with another friend, and now I am going to go to bed with all the windows open and the ceiling fans running with the house the perfect temperature for sleep.
Days like this are just, well, good. It’s good to be alive. On a lot of nights, I go to bed, and think- “I don’t want to deal with tomorrow.” But days like today just make me want to jump into bed, with the cool crisp sheets and pillows, and start all over in 6 hours when a doggie sticks a wet nose in my armpit. Because maybe, if I am lucky, tomorrow will be as good as today.

Make it 7, it’ll be even better.

Continuing on the sports theme, I can’t help but smile a bit that the Cardinals are off to a great start, and one Jose Alberto Pujols has 0 home runs in his first 48 plate appearances.

Good on you man. We all need way more days like this.

Nothing sucks worse than watching a friend go through a bad patch in a relationship. And all I can offer is booze and eardrums. I’ll shut up now.

it’s been a horrible week.

I miss days like that. Having one’s lover half the planet away for at least the next six months quite frankly sucks.
I’m living in sorta crappy (but cheap!) shared rental house, going home to a cold empty room (no central heating in australia!) and reading lots of trashy novels to make myself tired enough to go to sleep alone.
[/ self pity party]
At least the sun is bright most days, the air smells of eucalyptus and with the amount i’m being paid i’ll have enough saved for a down payment on a house in 18 months.

Happily, the slow adoption of instant replay by the MLB means Morgan can be a hero this evening. It also probably means that the Brewers are destined not to win again until June.

“What Uncle Alex found particularly objectionable about human beings in general was that they so seldom noticed it when they were happy.
He himself did his best to acknowledge it when times were sweet. We could be drinking lemonade in the shade of an apple tree in the summertime and Uncle Alex would interrupt the conversation to say, “If this isn’t nice, what is?”
I myself say that out loud at times of easy, natural bliss: “If this isn’t nice, what is?” Perhaps others can also make use of that heirloom from Uncle Alex. I find it really cheers me up to keep score out loud that way.”

@TheMightyTrowel: You know, I loved the title you gave your link: “pope to nuns: “stop wasting time with poor people, hate on gays and sluts” , but I was pretty sure it was going to be a bit of an exaggeration. But when I read the article, I’ll be damned… It wasn’t an exaggeration at all!
What a vile, authoritarian, hateful prick this pope has trend out to be. I hope the nuns tell him to go to hell, metaphorically speaking.
Yutsano
@MikeJ: Oh please let that news spread. Talk about sleeping with the enemy. It’d be fun to listen to the Boston sports jocks justify that little donation.

For the day in baseball, for me, the only thing that can improve on the A’s winning is for both the Red Sox and Yankees to lose the same day.
TheMightyTrowel
@WaterGirl: I remember when the first hints of this were coming over the wires about 2 or 3 years ago – rumours of an official inquisition against the american nuns.
All my (strong, professional, independent, breadwinning, catholic) aunts just refused to believe that the pope would do anything against the american nuns.
My mother (catholic school educated all the way through her BSc), a pediatrician who’d dragged me to mass every sunday of my life and who’d ceased going when cardinal law fled boston and the pedo priest scandal, just laughed at them.
She who laughs last, eh?

@TheMightyTrowel: You know, I’ve been wondering exactly how bug-fuck insane I must be.
I look at the institution of the RCC and I see a bunch of hateful people who ignore the poor and the needy, hate gay people, hate women, protect child rapists, and actively deny justice to the raped children.
And yet…
They are granted respect and special status in society.
In the decade since Boston broke, they’ve convinced their laity and many other Americans to give them money to campaign against gays.
If I were sane and I knew right from wrong these guys would be run out of town by villagers with pitchforks and torches.
Yet, it is still this gay atheist who is more likely to be punished by society if not actually beaten or killed for not being the way the RCC hierarchy wants me to be.
This makes so little sense, I can only conclude I’m bug fuck insane and I don’t understand anything.

@TheMightyTrowel: My mom left the church in 1960 when our parish priest told her she would go to hell if she took the birth control pull.
Sometimes it’s a sad thing to be right.
I just wish the catholic church would lose its tax exempt status. The catholic church wants to have it both ways. I wish the IRS would say “you want to be political and tax exempt – pick one”.
TheMightyTrowel
@WaterGirl: The first conversation my mother and I ever had about reproductive rights happened after a mass when i was about 8 and the priest got up and spoke against abortion. My mom and i sat in the car after in front of the bagel place we always went to and she explained (a) that the priest was lying (b) what an abortion was and (c) that she’d had one.
I can’t imagine how hard it was for her to say all of that to me, but that i remember it word for word says something about the impact.
To her chagrin (at least until she left the church) I never really believed anything the priests said after that.

@Cacti:
I don’t pay much attention to baseball (or any other professional sport for that matter), but it seems pretty clear that Pujols is one of major league baseball’s all-time greatest hitters.
Your comment made me curious and I did a quick check and it looks like only one hitter who has retired in the last 50 years has a higher batting average (Tony Gwynn). And Pujols is a much better power hitter than Gwynn. Pujols is like a throwback to the days of Musial and Williams — really high average + power.
As a kid, I did root for some sports teams and I also had a kid’s irrational hatred for some players (i.e., any Brooklyn Dodger). Later, as I followed baseball only in passing (through headlines), I no longer rooted for anyone, but I did kind of root against some people — like anyone who suddenly put on 30 pounds of solid muscle and started breaking records.
In Pujols case, I don’t know if there has ever been any credible accusation about performance enhancing substance use on his part, but if not (and I just read a plausible argument that Pujols has been clean), then no matter what team he plays for, I feel like I should (silently) root for him to do well. OK, root is too strong a word for a complete non-fan, but let’s just say I’m glad when a non-cheater excels.
After disasters like Bonds, Rodriguez, and Clemens, a clean superstar is something admirable. So, Cacti, feel free to hate Britney Spears, but why not give Pujols a break?
PS If you’re nice to him, maybe he’ll give you a million or two (to make up for his leaving St. Louis).

Lawrence O’Donnell played a vid on Last Word last night that made my skin crawl. The People for the American Way has a study out on Robert Bork’s ugly lifetime views. Bork is on Romney’s Justice advisory committee. Bork embodies the most monstrous traits of extremist Republican ideology. He is even more horrifying than I remembered.
To think that Mitt would pick a Supreme Court Justice on Bork’s recommendation scares the hell out of me. Maybe Bork would do a Cheney trick and recommend himself for the job.

@TheMightyTrowel:
Thanks for highlighting the WaPost article on Rome cracking down on American nuns.
How many times can one leave the Catholic Church, though?
Ratzinger wants the nuns to observe Biblical (i.e. pre-Medieval and Renaissance) teachings. While they do their work, out in the 21st century world.
Kirbster
@Elizabelle:
The problem is that the RCC still counts you as a member long after you have stopped attending Mass, stopped financially supporting them, and stopped believing their doctrines. You have to actively seek excommunication from the Church. I found a handy guide on how to do it, but it sounds like it’s a lot of work to get free of them once and for all.
Punchy
@David Koch: I still cant believe that Serious Boston hired a guy that once tried to fool the umps by sitting in the clubhouse in a “disguise” after being tossed. Clown car scent is wafting thru Fenway.
Meanwhile, the stench of manure is wafting thru my Wrigley and Boys.
Ron
@Kirbster: That is so bizarre. Also, quite frankly, that guide doesn’t really help people who still consider themselves Christian, but want to leave the Catholic Church as the first sentence in the letter is a declaration of atheism.

I lived next to Fenway for over 10 years (1994-2007 with a gap of a couple of years) and I rode the height of Red Sox passion from 1998-2004; I went to tons and tons of games, and was lucky enough to go to several playoff games during that storied run in 2004.
But as soon as they won that year, I stopped paying attention for the most part. And I don’t miss it one bit.
I’ve long believed New Englanders LOVED “The Curse”, and now without it, we’re lost.
We need the Sox to suck for an extended period of time before my love will return. I don’t like cheering for Yankees North.

IIRC, converting to another religion (which includes other Christian sects) achieves the same purpose. Though I’m not quite sure how one officially converts to Unitarian Universalism since they’re non-creedal (ie you don’t have to declare your belief in anything in order to join).

They rarely are. They’re only that good when they’re a pleasant surprise. The rest of existence is a desperate struggle to revisit that feeling of contentment and/or fill the void left in its absence. TGIF, though, right?
