Had some delicious cabbage rolls for dinner, although I must admit I am starting to feel like the kids in the Toyota commercials who talk about how few friends their parents have on facebook and how they are worried their parents have no lives, when at the same time the commercial is crosscutting to the parents at a bonfire. I told mom and dad I wanted cabbage rolls, and at around 3 o’clock, dad called and said “Hey- the cabbage rolls are in the oven. Take ’em out around five and can you let the dogs out, because mom and I are going out.” I guess I naively assumed my 70 year old parents would want to have a sit down dinner, but apparently I was wrong.
It was a really nice day here today. I pruned all my tomatoes a little bit, set up the bean poles, and for about a half hour just lay in the grass in the shade with Lily and Rosie. Now I’m having some wine and watching yet another Law and Order marathon on USA.

Not pruning my tomato plants. I know there’s still a debate on this, but really, there’s no earthly good on taking off what is seen as ‘sucker’ branches on your tomato vines. They don’t take anything away from the plants, they add. It’s logical, more foliage, more energy for your vines and budding tomatoes. Prunings a waste of time.

The kittens are sweet. I want the darker tortie but two kitties are enough fun (and litter box scooping) for us. I forgot to scoop one day which has to be done every day and one of them didn’t want to linger in the litter box, jumped out before quite completing the job and I ended up giving her a butt bath and mopping up the room to boot.That was not the way I wanted to start the day.

This is a really stupid fundraising stunt by the Obama re-election campaign. It invites ridicule, never a good move. Even worse, you just know a lot of people will be less resentful of billionaires forking over $100 million to elect Romney than they are of Obama suggesting that ordinary Americans give up gifts they’ve got coming to them to give donations to him.

Actually, pruning helps your tomatoes quite a bit, most people just overdo it. If you are caging or using the “Florida weave” staking method you should prune everything from the first sucker below the first flower sets. You get more fruit, larger fruit, more airflow in the plants (so less disease), etc. ATTRA.ncat.org, the National Sustainable Ag Info service, has a great article showing the strengths and weaknesses of each of the trellising methods.
smintheus
@quannlace: After tomatoes get to a certain size, I try to prune the lower branches to give better air circulation and prevent/slow the onset of disease.

Hahahahaha, but Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter is the best liberal movie of the year. Great costume/set work, the silliness is self-effacing, and it actually has a pretty good metaphor for slavery… wish fulfillment and petty gratification abound, if that’s your kind of thing. Lots of fun. Not the pandering piece of shit I was vaguely afraid of. Portrayed those “great” plantation houses exactly as I perceive them. FUN FUN FUN.

@Steeplejack:
Zen! I was so upset when they decided not to do more episodes. It was so good.
I also love the Montalbanos. I have read every book by Camillieri and these are really good adaptations.
On the other hand the swedish adaptations of the Van Veeteren mysteries (written by Hakan Nesser) are good as shows but totally change the books around which kind of annoyed me.

@AliceBlue: My one experience with llamas was seeing some in a zoo when I was with my mother and sister. I told them about how llamas spit. I barely got it out before one of them covered my face in in a greenish goo.

freelancer
Finally, SC shows a little offense.
AliceBlue
@J. Michael Neal:
A zoo is a terrible place for llamas; a llama in a zoo is under a great deal of stress, even if he/she appears to be well fed and taken care of. Since they don’t bite, spitting is the only way they can show distress or anger.
We’ve had our girls for six years, the boys three; none of them have ever spit at us, even when we are doing things to them that they don’t particularly like, such as shearing, hoof trimming and shots.
PurpleGirl
@Steeplejack: Don’t have a Tivo. I had an old Sony Trinatron which I recently replaced with a new Sharp flat screen. (Courtesy of money received from my family.)
Steeplejack
@Valdivia:
No more Zen? That’s a bummer. The novels by Michael Dibdin are very good. I read them when they first came out. They went out of print for a while (Dibdin died, I think), but they are available again now.
I read a few of Camillieri’s novels, but the TV show has ruined them for me. The show is just too good. I own all 20-something episodes; the only other thing I can think of that I have “everything” of on DVD is Hayao Miyazaki’s movies.
I love the Van Veeteren novels. I read them all in a rush last year. I like how they take place in a nonspecific (but northern European) country, and I liked the way the personalities of the various detectives emerged in the books. I have seen only one of the TV shows, before I read the books, but I stopped because I didn’t want the books to be ruined. I guess I could go back and watch the shows now.
You probably know that the cable channel MHz shows Montalbano on Sunday night (9:00 and midnight). They used to show Van Veeteren one night a week, but they may have changed over to Beck recently. My other recommendation is Maigret on Tuesday night. They are incredibly slow-paced, but I like them. They do a great job of putting you in France in some vague 1940s-50s period.

@Steeplejack:
I had read all the Dibdin books and loved how he decided to end the Zen series but the BBC adaptations were so good. I read that they may be produced by someone else. I hope so.
And yes the series is so great (I have only seen a 7 or so episodes) and I probably would have not read the books had I not already read so many. The one I read last month, after seeing the tv adaptation was different because I could see this Montalbano and Catarella (who I love) as the actors in the book. I will make sure to watch MHz so catch the rest of the episodes (and Maigret, another favorite series of mine and had no idea they had done a tv adaptation.
Sincerely I wouldn’t bother with watching the Van Veeteren series. If you enjoyed the books and the characters you will find the series changes things so much it’s kind of distracting.
