The NRA’s ad accusing President Obama of being an elitist hypocrite was not well-received by the White House.

Jay Carney described it as “cowardly and repugnant.”

The ad asks whether Obama’s kids are more important than yours.No, dummies. Of course not. But President Obama *is* under constant threat of assassination (to the tune of 43,000 threats over his first four years) so settle down, gun nuts.

    That DailyKos link is depressing. Oh well, hopefully some young people will watch their paranoid parents shitting themselves daily and decide that they’re, like, totally uncool and stuff.

    I have to hope because otherwise I will give up. Not complacent–burned out.

    Fuck, I dunno how Obama does it… I guess he did take the gloves off and is mouthing off to the GOP daily. Love it.

    The NRA had to go on a media offensive. We all understand that, they are a special interest group and are paid to work for those who pay them.

    Those people should be demanding their money back, payable in cash, today.

    I do not think it is possible that the NRA could have done anything more counterproductive than this.

    The NRA is saying the ad isn’t about MR. Obama’s children. Since the President doesn’t own goats, I assumed that when he referenced Mr. Obama’s kids three times, he meant Sasha and Malia. Silly me..

    I didn’t realize that the NRA was proposing that we subject the armed guards they want to put into schools to the same level of vetting and background checks that Secret Service agents go through.

    Oh, they’re not? Isn’t there a big difference between a random janitor with a gun and a Secret Service agent with a gun?

    They keep telling us that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. But they seem to be so much more focused on the guns than the people behind them.

    What is it with conservatives and their inability to understand that qualifications actually exist for jobs? It really is starting to seem of a piece with their insistence that President Obama and Justice Sotomayor are obviously less qualified for their jobs than any random white man you could pick out in the street because, well, just look at them, amirite?

    Let everyone who wants a gun go through the background checks and proficiency training and tests that Secret Service agents go through REPEATEDLY and they can have all the guns they want. Fail once and you’re out. Deal!

    I would call that NRA ad something worse. I would call it a veiled threat.

    It isn’t just “hypocrisy.” What the NRA seems to be saying is:

    “Go ahead, Mister President … if you enact some gun control regulations we don’t like, drop your armed Secret Service protection. And the protection on your family. And then you can live in constant fear of some freedom-loving gun enthusiast using his firearms to express their displeasure. Which is insecurity you deserve, since you have stepped on their Second Amendment rights.”

    It is a veiled threat. It is just a hop and a skip between this snarky claim of “hypocrisy” and considering what kinds of threats that the Secret Service protects against.

    I’d bet that a significant number of those threats are issued by NRA card holders. Someone needs to research that and make a very vocal point about it. How better to point out the NRA’s vile sickness?
