I hadn’t paid much attention to the Bachman Traitor Overdrive since noting she said something crazy on Hardball, but apparently there has been some huge fall-out. I just saw CNN run a piece comparing what Rep. Bachman said on Hardball to her denials to the Washington Times, showing she is completely full of it, and apparently her opponent has raised near a million bucks to defeat her since her HUAC revival. Now that the denials have fallen flat, she is claiming a misstatement.
I have to say, that is pretty awesome. If I had my way, we would dump a million dollars into every campaign against the core wingnut crew, but this alone is fun.
RememberNovember
What do these wingnuts think? That their lunatic comments magically vaporize in the ether after viewing?
Roll tape….
though nowadays it’s binary- and can be duped faster than you can blink.
Far Left American Hater Incertus
It is fun. If wingnuts were smart, they’d look at this sort of thing (or at what we did to Santorum, for example) and lower their profile a bit. but if they were smart, they wouldn’t be wingnuts.
El Cid
She’s not saying she screwed up by saying it. She’s saying she screwed up by going on Chris Matthew’s show since he tricked her into something:
See? It’s all that evil Chris Matthews’ fault.
First you accept his invitation to go on a national TV show, and the next thing you know he’s tricked you completely against your will into declaring that the media needs to investigate which members of Congress are anti-American.
It’s clearly not her fault at all. It’s the librul medja.
Napoleon
. . . and the DCCC decided to put $1m into the race. There is no doubt she is pure unhinged true believer and its hard to imagine anywhere in the US wanting to be represented by her type.
r€nato
A trap?
She’s never seen Hardball?
Holy crap. She doesn’t know when to stop lying. She’d have more credibility if she’d just say, ‘look, I was drunk! It was the Captain Morgan talking!’
Original Lee
Ah, the old unapologetic apology. I think the GOP strategy has melted down to straightforward passive-aggressive nonapologetics and will soon be just a puddle of rancid butter in the style of the story of the little boy and the tigers.
OTOH, this piece by Larison is full of win.
r€nato
unsurprisingly, this will be the wingnut excuse after the election. "See, voters rejected Palin (and hopefully Bachman) because the media actually reported on the things they said and did! If the media would have just ignored what they said and did and concentrated on being an extension of their campaigns, the voters would have voted for them and been none the wiser."
Atanarjuat
Of course Bachmann is getting "what she deserves." When a woman dares to speak truth to power — especially a conservative woman — the usual phalanx of liberal wife-beaters elbow past each other to kick the uppity woman down the basement stairs and lock the door tight.
Yeah, that’ll teach her not to mouth off, alright. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann better know her place — or else!
Liberal "empowerment" of women — you gotta love irony.

LOL. Yes, that must be it. Those biased liberal reporters are out to get us God Fearing Real Americans. Tehy sets out their Idjit traps and wheeze steps in it ever time.
DrDave
I watched the show when it was originally aired. Once Bachmann got on a roll, Matthews uncharacteristically shut up and let her hang herself with her own words.
I read the article in Politico and the article you link to here. In none of these places does Bachmann say, "What I said was wrong and I apologize for saying something so stupid." What she says is "I made a mistake; I believe these things are true but I should have been smart enough to keep my mouth shut."
In the Politico piece Monday, she whines that "most of the people who donated to my opponent have never even voted for a Republican." So do what I did: Call her office, tell them about Republicans you have supported or do support and tell them why you donated to her opponent. There is no place for this sort of McCarthyist bullshit in America today and that we will be a better country with Michele Bachmann out of Congress.

Videotape has a well-known liberal bias.

It’s a sort of field trip: here’s the red-bellied insinuation, there’s the yellow-tailed terrorist smear, and ‘way up in the treetops we see new varieties of the big-mouthed non-denial-denial.

Indeed, donating to the campaign of the opponent of a female Republican candidate is the ultimate act of oppression and misogyny.

That is so, so, awesomely right wing stupid that I am thankful I stopped by to see it today. I only WISH that some right wing blog nimrod could get McCain to spout such a beautiful crazyism.

Who the fuck is Roger Simon, and WTF is this point of this article? Does he always clown on Democrats like this?
Dennis - SGMM
No one could have anticipated that Matthews would ask Bachmann a question and then let her answer it in her own words.
Zifnab
What’s Bachman’s problem? Is she suddenly denying the hotbed of anti-American sentiment that boils just underneath the surface in thousands of anti-American cities and towns across America? Does she honestly believe that no member of Congress holds intensely unpatriotic feelings towards our country and that we should just turn a blind eye to the raging anti-Christian anti-Constitutional anti-Flag / Mom / Apple Pie fever that has deluged our country since Osama Bin HUSSEIN Barak Obama attacked us on 9/11?
Clearly, Bachman has been compromised and I would suggest a full House inquiry into her relations and her position on American Liberty and Freedom. How can she defend our civil rights and protect us from gay marriage abortions if she keeps hiding from the liberal media’s attempt to distort her words? Say it loud, say it proud Congress-lady! Stand up and be counted! You are the last and the bravest of us – the front line in our Cheetos-stained brigades dedicated to protecting our country from the vile and insidious Maoist Communism that the LIE-brul party wants to poison American capitalism with.
If you don’t stand up and get counted, Ms Bachman, you’re part of the problem. You’re either with us or your with the terrorists!

That be Tweety Bird power.

What really sucks is she’ll probably win anyway. Her district is really weird, farmers, exurban rednecks, etc. right on the fringe of the super liberal Twin Cities.

Comrade Darkness
I don’t watch much tv, but I watched that clip. Matthews must be a heck of a fisherman. He knows there is a prize large mouth (bass) out there, and he just keeps feeding out the line, and feeding it out, until the bait becomes irresistible and Bachmann hooks herself by finally saying what she really thinks. I’ll give Matthews credit for knowing she had something royally stupid (on a McCarthy scale) to say.

"Bachmann Traitor Overdrive" is the best sobriquet in the history of American politics.

Hey, Sarah Palin is currently arguing that her possession and usage of a vagina is the primary reason women should vote for her. Voting for Obama/Biden is therefore an act of oppression and misogyny to her, I suppose.

I was about to get all fired up and spout off to Atanarjuat, but I am just not feeling it today. So here is some Obama love from down here in Cajun country instead. "Oui on Peut"
pseudonymous in nc
I’m equivocal about this: some districts are drawn to elect loons, and some districts draw loons to them. Bachmann is essentially serving in the Minnesota Loon District (Twin Cities exurbs up to St Cloud; I have non-loon friends in the district, just outside St Paul), and while the money that went to Tinklenberg will doubtless pay for champagne and hookers for the local TV affiliates’ Christmas parties, I’m not sure it will make a difference.
As I’ve said here before, that $1m might be better spent giving a thousand people $1,000 each to tell Bachmann to shut the fuck up.
NonyNony
I just hope her opponent wins.
Not just because she’s clearly insane and possibly a danger to herself and those around her. Not just because it would be sweet to watch one of James Dobson’s favored candidates get run out of office. Not just because it would be another great example of a candidate getting rejected because people are sick of hate.
But because we’d have a Rep in Congress named "Elwyn Tinklenberg". I mean, come on – how awesome is that?
greynoldsct00
For God’s sake you know that issue isn’t her giving her opinion it’s the opinion itself – defining who’s an American. She’s allowed to say it but that doesn’t make it less offensive. And damn straight, if a women says something offensive she should own it just like a man should. People have had a enough of the divisive politics over the last eight years, we don’t need more.

It’s not her fault; her staff told her she was going on a show called Slow-Pitch Softball.

"apparently her opponent has raised near a million bucks to defeat her since her HUAC revival."
OT, but in one of those "truth is stranger than fiction even if fiction took acid every day and lived in Haight-Ashbury or Greenwich Village for five years doing a Ph.D. in how to be weird" bits of history, the House Un-American Activities Commission was set up by A Democratic Congressman from Mattanhan, Samuel Dickstein, who was in the pay of the KGB. Initially, it investigated fascist sympathizers, which is presumably why Dickstein (or his KGB handlers) wanted it.

@r€nato:
Not to mention giving her large sections of contiguous air time to simply say whatever she wants to say is silencing her and keeping her down. Except it’s the opposite.
The "trap" was allowing her to say, publicly and for the record, what she really thinks. And she wasn’t smart enough to keep her mouth shut. Even if someone were to endorse all her ideas, she’s not smart enough to accomplish your goals. Rs and Ds should be trying to get rid of her. And sure enough, she has R competition as well. Also. Too.
What I loved most in this train wreck is how the McPain strategy of getting the base into a frothing frenzy, we’ve discovered a member of the House taking that ball and running all the way to neo-McCarthyism.

Tweety is tricksy, yesssss, he issssssss.
Anybody who’s followed Bachmann can tell you that she and Palin are birds of a feather.
Yes, her district leans Repup but it doesn’t lean *that* much. She only got in cuz of the usual 3rd party lunacy in her district. That’s what will sink Franken if he loses.
Must be something in the MN water. I hear they have a lot of it.

Bachmann is an unadulterated moron. Fellow members of her own Minnesota Congressional delegation have stated that she’s broadly regarded as at least the third dumbest member of the House of Representatives … which, as anybody who follows that body knows, is no mean accomplishment.
I realize the bar is set awfully low here; but I find the fact that the Powerline dweebs aren’t capable of acknowledging Bachmann’s painfully obvious deficiencies is actually beyond me. There are some truths which absolutely demand recognition, particularly when they are hovering three feet above you dropping anvils on your head.
Repeatedly.
EL
I was watching Hardball and saw the segment, heard Michele Bachmann make insinuations and denigrating comments based on political party. I am a 55 year old woman, and my blood boiled; I immediately looked for a way to donate to her opponent.
I’m an "uppity woman" who went to professional school at a time when the classes were mostly male, and heard plenty of denigrating comments based on my gender. In her case, I agree she’d better "know her place" – she’s in America. America, where insinuations that someone is "anti-American" because they disagree with your political philosophy are out of place and obnoxious.
No need to lock her in the basement, I’ll be happy to lock her out of the House of Representatives.

@South of I-10: Thanks for the link to the vid I-10. Saw a bit of Oui on Peut last night on Rachel’s show. Love it!!
The Other Steve
She’s long been a bloody embarassment to the state.
But like most wingnuts she hid her craziness from the majority of people voting for her.
I think she’s toast in this election. Tinklenberg is a moderate endorsed by the DFL and IP parties. Bachmann won last time because the DFL and IP parties had separate candidates and split the vote.
Sadly, the choice in my district… Madia versus Paulsen is less than exciting. Can’t stand either of them.

Merci pour le link, cher.
I appreciate seeing the Obama push among the Cajuns. I was surprised to discover that my Cajun aunts, uncles and cousins in Calcasieu Parish are not so supportive.
In the past 10 years or so they’ve taken to hard, hateful, christian church beliefs (formerly Catholics). Palin speaks directly to them. But, really, with them, I feel it’s a racist thing. They grew up on a farm, HS educated. Disappointing.
Anyway, that zydeco hit the spot.

That comment was so….uh…so…damn….is this commenter a parody of something?
Bachmann doesn’t speak "truth to power." She’s a flaming idiot. She is barking mad. Doesn’t matter if she’s male, female or bonobo. Stupid is stupid and she’s just crazy stupid.
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
Biblical in the sense that the words are in The Bible, okay.
Biblical in the sense that Jesus told the apostle Paul to write those words? Um, I’d like to see the proof of that.
If the apostle Paul was such a great apostle, why was he not chosen in lots to take Judas’ place?
Answer: because he wasn’t all that he said (or thought) we was.

Ooops. My bad with the block quotes above. However, I think everyone can tell where the quote ends and I begin.

@passerby: Calcasieu Parish seems to have gone hard core Pentacostal – so I am sure they love Palin. There are a lot of Catholics here who are voting McCain strictly on abortion, even if voting for McCain is in every other way against their best interests. This is still a very conservative area, but there is a core group of liberals/moderates who are going to vote in their best interests. Geauxbama!

@CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII: Actually, Paul wasn’t one of the apostles, he was an early convert who never met Jesus at all. And the crazy thing is, when placed in historical context, Paul’s attitudes toward women aren’t that bad (which says a whole hell of lot about the historical context). Yet another reason that people who insist upon taking the Bible literally, to the word, are setting themselves up for a heap of fail.

I feel sorry for you guys in Minnesota. What a dim wit. She and Sarah would make a pair running for the White House. Dumb and Dumber. Hope her district has had enough embrassment and votes her out in 2010.
