Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

So many bastards, so little time.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

I may be the last to have seen this charming time-consumer, but on the off chance not, enjoy:

Alas. I was sorry to learn from the comment thread on that vid that Fum — the cat — died in May, only three. Given the list I have in my head of the ambulant evil this world would be a better place without (fill in the names yourself), this is yet one more piece of evidence that were a deity to exist, s/he’d be one vicious asshole.  But enough with such grand Pooh-Bah activity.  I just thought this bird-on-cat action (and vice versa) was a hoot.

Very playful, makes me happy to see it. I was already feeling pretty good thanks to a good performance on a technical phone screen for a job earlier today.

Animals – even animals that are mostly instinct-programmed like owls – can have varying personalities, and Gebra was hand-reared, so is very slightly socialized to people. Once Fum decided Gebra wasn’t in the “food” category, natural feline curiosity took over!

Watch the body language. Most of the time the owl’s neutral-to-annoyed (“oh, it’s you again?”) but every once in a while some affection leaks through, as much as a solitary bird of prey can feel affection toward anything. The cat, on the other hand, was having lots of fun with his grumpy playmate. ^.^

All that being said, I bet the Gebra misses Fum.

@ArchTeryx: Looks like the cat also put up with a lot of pecking. Which is probably better than play with talons.

Uh, no. O’Brien’s company has contracted to produce for Al-Jazeera, just as it’s contracted to produce for other networks, INCLUDING CNN! For gosh sakes, Tom, do your homework.

Was talking with the raptor-handler lady at our zoo, who said the bird they fear the most WRT talon strength is the great horned owl. Evidently, broken fingers and thumbs–throught the heavy leather gloves–are an occupational hazard.

@catclub: Exactly. The fact that the owl was pecking (and nibbling) was the tell – mild annoyance, not anger or fear. Gebra wasn’t trying to damage her playmate, only deter him from playing TOO rough.

And, Levenson, that’s so damned sad. Yes, sweet and happy, but fucking sad because Fum was so young.

Heard back from big jawb I interviewed for. Made it to second interview. We’ll see.

@Ben Cisco: Here’s what the AJA site says:

Al Jazeera America, the new American news channel that will launch in August, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Emmy Award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien’s production company, Starfish Media Group. O’Brien will contribute short-form segments as Special Correspondent to Al Jazeera America’s primetime current affairs magazine program “America Tonight,” and Starfish will produce hour-long documentary specials.

“O’Brien’s career producing and reporting on the human side of many of the most important stories of the past decade will fit in perfectly with what Al Jazeera America will be covering every day,” said Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of Al Jazeera’s international operations and the senior executive developing the new channel. “Her dedication to that type of journalism is what makes it so exciting to announce that she and her production company are joining the Al Jazeera America team.”

So yeah, her production company has a deal, but she will be a special correspondent and AJA congratulates her for “joining” them. I don’t think TPM made any huge mistakes here, except if you interpret “join” as “get hired as a full time employee who can’t work for anyone else”.
@Jerzy Russian: Yep. Happy Canada Day!

FUCK. Can’t count links, am in moderation.

Anyway, if my comment above takes a while to surface, just check the Al Jazeera America site for confirmation. Her production company has a contract, as does she — she will be a special correspondent — and they even congratulate her for “joining” their team.

    @Anna in PDX:

Thanks. This was the third call – recruiter talked with me for 30 minutes, then hiring manager for a bit over an hour (I had to write code for him in a shared document on line in real time, produced good code and was able to see a performance hack as I was writing it). This one was with one of my potential peers and I think he was favorably impressed with my analytical ability when I was thrown a problem that is a bit out of my wheelhouse – I had good insights into where the issues were and both ways of ameliorating the issues and how to collect data to drive improvements.

I’m excited about the job, it sounds like work I’d enjoy a lot.

Recruiter mentioned that there’s a bit of a war going on in Silicon valley for engineering talent – basically green light for me to negotiate if they decide they are interested enough to make an offer.

I’m hoping to do 3-4 hours on site next week.
