I reside in cooking hell. My family tradition is that the man of the house does the cooking and baking. I like new recipes, sauces, spices, garnish, exotic veggies, elaborate salads and fish. My dear wife and my wonderful son like pizza, spaghetti, and those marinated tri-tips that you get at Costco. Ever try to cook an asparagus and cheese tart for one? Don’t.

I think Mr. South of I-10 is working late, so pretty much whatever little South of I-10 will eat. That probably means red beans and rice, which is the only thing she will eat with any regularity. I have now learned to always have some frozen.

Like the Obama girls, my favorite food is CHEESE. Can I say how multi-orgasmic is the Dietz&Watson NY State Aged Cheddar with Horseradish?
Also, too, I recently received a Foreman Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine. Last night…grilled, halved, yellow squash soaked in olive oil and spices. Duplicating tonight, it was so good. I hate to cook more than words can express, but the Foreman Grill almost makes it…choke…fun?

I like stinky cheeses and sharp cheeses. Basically, the more a cheese smells like an old sweat sock, the more I like it.
I think the reason I like wings is because they give me a way to get more blue cheese in my mouth. Love it.

I grew up right on I-20. Red beans and rice was served every week in the school cafeterium , but not on Monday. Fridays. It was awful. Good thing I grew up and had the good stuff. My scarred youth has been unscarred. Funny how we learn to eat things we used to hate.

I’m making beer chicken. Remove skin and pat dry 4-6 chicken pieces and brown in a bit of canola oil in dutch oven at medium-high heat. Add a packet of dry onion soup mix, hot red pepper to taste, and a whole beer, stir, cover, and simmer until cooked, 35-45 minutes to an hour (depending on whether chicken has bones). Uncover and reduce sauce on medium-high heat until smooth and thickened. Serve over brown rice with a green salad. No one ever believes how easy this is to make.

Was having wings but was at the store and bought a roti chicken which I will douse with wing sauce. Add buttery broccoli, avocado and greens with blue cheese dressing. A glass of chardonnay. After the several glasses of Makers.
I’m on a low carb diet to get rid of all the flab I’ve gained sitting in front of this machine and the teevee for the last 2 endless years of this campaign.

That is my favorite reality show ever. Ever.
How can that be? you axe? Because I hate to cook, but LOVE to eat. Too, also, food and beverage jobs in fine dining joints and wineries in Carmel, Napa, Yountville… were some of my favorite jobs in life. I’d love to own a wine bar or small restaurant some day. If I could find a chef I could get along with.

Hmmmmm cheese. Moving to the US was a real culture shock for me in more than one way. One of the worst was the first time I went to the "deli" (Ha fucking ha) to buy some "cheese" (dies laughing). Yellow american or white american? The personage behind the counter asked I suddenly realized that I had died and had been cast into cheeselovers hell. One of my fondest memories from the mother country was visiting Cheddar Gorge, sitting outside an ancient pub eating a Ploughman’s lunch made with "real, honest to god had been in the caves in the gorge just earlier that morning" aged cheddar and drinking a cold Carlsberg god it was bliss. What is it with regular americans aversion to "proper" cheese? Luckily I now have a Fresh Market fairly close (well an hour away) so I can go and stock up and get my cheese fix about once a month.
PS) American cheese is not cheese and should not be allowed to call itself such, it is processed cheese or as my daddy used to call it "plastic cheese" which was different from "invisible cheese" which was cheese spread. Calling american cheese "cheese" is like calling Welches sparkling white grapejuice "champagne" PAH!

Laura – I am drinking the Yellow Tail Cabernet/Shiraz blend as we speak, it is pretty much the only wine I drink these days. If I really fancy White I will go for the Yellow Tail Chardonney. The Australian wines are great (they actually don’t travel that well, they taste even better in Oz) and I was delighted when they began to be introduced over here, I cannot drink American wine (too many sulphides). I really wish I could get a good Chablis over here on a regular basis that is, (see American wine comment above). I really miss a seriously chilled really nice Chablis.
BTW – I got a pomegranate (sp) wine from Fresh Market recently, very interesting, it is almost like a port in that it is really light in the mouth but once it starts going down the throat it warms you all the way down, very nice. You should try it.

Tiffany still holds that special place in my heart, although she wasn’t angry or surly, just cute and awesomely "fierce". Mixing Bravo reality show contestants now. I actually had a "tiff" (HA!) with a woman about Tiffany’s sexual preferences. I knew she was a lesbian all along, but this other woman thought she was into men and tried to make it a muddled issue on the show, ie, pretending she was straight or bi. Honestly. People see what they want to see in reality TeeVee.

@ Laura W: I am in expat foodie heaven with the Snowdonia Cheese Company at the moment. Their Green Thunder is just the thing with homemade bread, second only to baked camembert.
Dinner tonight was wholewheat tagliatelle with the last of the garden spinach, garlic, red onions, and heaps of blue cheese (Danish, not stilton– stilton should be baked in a pie with venison or steak).
Since then I’ve brushed my teeth twice.

@Litlebritdifrnt: No way! The weird thing about that is just last night (or night before) on this very blog I trashed the Grenache/Shiraz, stating it was previously a fave. Well, today I looked at the label again and it was the Cab/Shiraz, 2007 I was drinking, not the G/S! Not horrible, but not as good as the 2008 Pinot (in my mouth) and certainly NOT my beloved Grenache/Shiraz. I’d pulled the wrong bottle from the shelf, intending to pull the G/S.
So I googled Yellow Tail and discovered they have a Rose, too, (and a sparkler I will seek out) so when I went to the market today and got my 6 bottles, 4 were Pinot and two are Rose. I am going to wait for the 2008 Grenache/Shiraz to show up. They had it in the 1.5, but I’ll try the .750 when it shows on shelves.
Oh yeah…I have a Pinot Grigio in the fridge I’ve not tried yet also by YT. I am enjoying my red wine binge while I can. So far, no horrible side effects. Although I was super irritable, depressed and anxious today.
I blame Obama.

For dinner, I did up some pasta carbonara with lots of Parmesan — ’twas quite tasty.
And yes, I’d give up meat before I’d give up cheese. Actually, that’s the part of my meal I enjoyed the most when we went to Babbo for our wedding supper. Evidently, Mario Batali’s father-in-law makes cheese, but only for Mario’s restaurants. Let me tell you, I was smashed out of my gourd by the time the cheese course came around, but it still stands out in my mind as being freaking phenomenal.

Speaking of cheese have any of you guys tried Lancashire Cheese? It is my favorite (after a really good cheddar), there are lots of types, creamy, crumbly, mild, tasty, etc., etc., IMHO it is the BEST cheese in the world for Cheese on Toast, it has such a velvety texture when melted it is brilliant.

@JohnY: Power to you! I had made incredible strides in the early part of this year, low carbing (which I love, actually.) Then summer came along. I totally blame Hillary for making it impossible for me to stay committed. Sometime after July 4th I started losing it, on all levels (except weight, I guess). I told myself: "It’s OK…ease up on yourself until election day. Who can possibly stay on a diet NOW???" It’s seems that now I’m easing up on myself until Inauguration Day. I blame Palin and McCain. After that, I figure I’ll use "Re-election campaign 2012" and blame all political blogs.
I did not, however, come home with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake Limited Edition flavor tonight.

On the subject of food, my housemate was reminiscing about the cinnamon coffee cake they served at her high school cafeteria. I guess attendance at LA Unified schools was way up the days that was on the menu. It was so popular, in fact, that when they published the recipe, it made the SF paper. She made it a while back. It is the best I’ve ever had.

I was excited beyond words on our last visit to London, stepping into a deli to see cheeses everywhere that don’t manage to make their way to Australia…
However, that pales into insignificance against Portugal – the supermarket that we used to visit was standard, big supermarket size, and almost 1/3 of the supermarket was devoted just to cheese and sausage… there were literally hundreds (possibly up to 1000) different cheeses… Heaven.
