‘The March’ is the story of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, told by the people who organized and participated in it. It includes interviews with some of the key actors; members of the inner circles of the core organizational groups; Hollywood supporters and civil rights campaigners; John F. Kennedy administration officials; and the ordinary people who became part of the crowd of thousands, who thronged to Washington D.C. by all and every means: plane, bus and car.

‘The March’ is the story of discrimination, defiance and victory told by the people who made it happen and whose lives it changed forever…

    A new Public Policy Polling survey in Maine shows current US Rep. Mike Michaud (D) leading Gov. Paul “Landslde” LePage in the race for governor, 39% to 35%, with another 18% for Eliot Cutler. That’s basically the MoE. Cutler should be able to narrow that once the two challengers start running ads against each other instead of LePage.

    In a two way contest, Michaud would blow LePage out, 54% to 39%.

    Same 3-way-race dynamic that gave us arguably the craziest governor in the country last time….

    I don’t know. I have never seen teachers so pissed in all my life. They are fuming about LePage and furious that Cutler shares so many of his opinions about teachers unions and charter schools. I think this time will be different.

    Anne, I am so glad that you highlighted the show on PBS tonight. Sunday’s MTP aired an interview with Martin Luther King from fifty years ago. Many of us remember the King years but history does gloss over the Communist sentiment that was occurring at that time. I do think that J. Edgar played the communist card.

    Love the newsmax headline regarding The Butler “plummeting” 30% in it’s second week. They are so irate at the portrayal of Saint Ronnie.

    Meanwhile in the real world:

    With good reviews and strong word-of-mouth, The Butler fell 33 percent to $16.5 million. In comparison, The Help dropped 23 percent at the same point in its run two years ago, while 42 dipped 36 percent in its second weekend in April. Through 10 days in theaters, The Butler has earned $51.8 million.

    “Cubans under the age of 50 wish their grandparents would shut the fuck up about Fidel Castro.”

    But somehow, Herman Cain and three other guys constitute a powerful and representative protest movement, worthy of respect and coverage.

    @efgoldman: We had a similar situation in Vermont for several years when the Democrats and Progressives kept splitting the non-Republican vote. That said, Jim Douglas was no Paul LePage.

    I know a lot of folks don’t have much use for Time Magazine and its ilk, and, in certain important areas, like the economy, I agree. But, a couple times a month they have an article that makes the $28 a year worth it. This week, the article was on the March. They just talked with a lot of the participants from the time and posted what they had to say. Lots of good stuff, but, the one that hit me was a comment by Clarence B. Jones, King’s speechwriter. He was standing on the platform behind King as King stood to read his speech.

    I’m standing on the platform about 50 feet behind him and he is introduced by A. Philip Randolph in this sonorous voice: “At this time, I have the honor to present to you the moral leader of our nation. I have the pleasure to present to you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” The place goes crazy! I mean it’s just like an explosion of approval. I’m looking at the audience as he’s looking at them. Then, as he’s speaking, Mahalia Jackson, who had performed earlier on the program and who was his favorite gospel singer, interrupted him.: “Tell them about the dream, Martin. Tell them about the dream.”

    I’m watching him from the back. He takes the text of his speech that he was reading, and he moves it to the side of the lectern. And then he grabs both sides of the lectern and I say to the person standing next to me–whoever that was–I said, These people don’t know it but they are about to go to church.

    If that doesn’t send shivers down your spine, I don’t know what will.

    @efgoldman: Cutler’s not a politician, though. He’ll tell you — over and over again — how the problem with politics is that there’s too much politics involved. And the answer is not better politicians, it’s no politicians at all. And he’s not a Democrat — his party left him..

    The American Experience ran a documentary on the Freedom Riders in 1961. Talk about bravery. It also shows that America’s establishment suddenly became enlightened on race in the late 50s and 60s. The motivation was imperial. The Jim Crow apartheid regime in the South was an international embarrassment and handicap to the interests of Empire and therefore had to go. The interplay between the Freedom Riders and Kennedy’s trip to Europe and the Vienna summit with Khrushev really taught me something I had not thought about, And both SNCC and Martin Luther King were aware of the that leverage on the American Government.

    Not that it was not well know, but in a world filled with assholes in 1961, J. Edgar Hoover was perhaps the biggest.

    @sherparick: I watched that after the documentary on The March last night, and it was pretty powerful. I remember one redneck hayseed down there saying on camera, proudly, that the southern white man was the best friend the negro ever had. Yeah, because your best friend is the guy who might lynch you just because he feels like it.
