Apparently Donnie Iris is a musician from Pittsburgh. Never heard of him. Had to Google him.

Ha. The wife was youtubing yinser comics while I was cursing the end of the game.

Welcome to Blah Friday!

Just as well it didn’t go into overtime. The Steelers may not have had enough players left to finish the game.
I do wish the onside kick would have been better. The Stillers winning at the last second would have been great button pushing material with the ratbird fans here in south central Pa.

AH LEAH!!
THERE WE GO AGAIN.
AHHHHH LEEEAAH!!
WILL IT NEVER END?

IMODO, “Ah Leah” can’t hold a candle to “Agnes.”

Donny Iris had a video that received heavy play in the early MTV days. Hadn’t heard of him previously and hadn’t heard of him since, until about a week ago when a song of his was on the radio. Now, this. Is he finally making his move? Is he still alive?

The http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/ page has some innerestin opinions of a SF writer with the big head about wimmens in the literary genere the big-head author thinks he’s in.
Further down is some outrageous Thanksgiving historical material hinted around to avoid spoiling folks’s dinners. by Erik Loomis, no less. I’m agonna have ta look somma ‘at up tomorrow…. see what he was talkin’ around. Not family dinnertable talk, fer sure.

@JR in WV:
ON further research,not as dinner-spoiling as I thought it might be. Just kind of typical ugly-white-guy behavior, not revolving around cannabilism but just grave robbery/bad as that is.

@JR in WV:
Actually they don’t, they just link to the awfulness. I wish she had simply told us what kind of moron he was without me having to wade through that nonsense myself.
I’m a fan of the occasional zoomzoom boomboom rocketship book, but I wasn’t familiar with the dumb ass in question. The pic on his wikipedia page sort of answered all my questions about him.

Finally got around to watching Thor on Netflix. Pretty good. Surprised it was directed by Kenneth Branagh.

@Redshirt
In winter.
(Friend and I still occasionally use “Shaka, his middle finger extended” as a slightly politer euphemism when among those familiar with Trek.)

At Gilaad.
It’s funny how a not so great episode of TNG (and a fairly blatant ripoff of Enemy Mine, IIRC) gained instant recognition across a surprisingly large segment of the population.

Weeks ago picked up a library book that can only be described as “dessert pr0n”. Made a parfait of a salted caramel pudding and sauce from scratch.
Sauce was outrageously addictive, pudding didn’t really set. And I’ve made pudding from scratch before. But between the flavor of it all and the little tasting spoons that kept going back for the caramel sauce, it was a hit.
I will try to bring it closer to the edge of caramel burntness next time.

@ThresherK: The surfeit of salted caramel options in the world today has helped make up for the general suckiness of ’13.
Partner and I each lost a parent and had a serious bout of illness. On the other hand, he started a promising new treatment, I got a promotion, and while it was soul-shredding, we won and don’t have to hear the name of his disability insurer ever again. (It’s UNUM… but they all suck, ya know?)
And I found an outlet for the local salted goat milk caramels that does not involve going all the way to their farm. And Lindt came out with a dark chocolate sea salt caramel bar.
So there’s that.

ALSO, if anyone is dealing with auto-immunity or what they call neuro-immune illness (MS, lupus, chronic fatigue/ME/wot-the-heck-they-call-it, rheumatoid arthritis, that kind of thing) see if you can get a genetic test for mutations on the MTFHR gene.
I know two people dealing with CF/ME, and it turns out both of them have the C677T mutation. (I do not.) This was only discovered in 2003, treatment was only developed in 2007, and chances are your doctor has never heard of it.

Donnie! Not just from Pittsburgh, but from Beaver County!
Personally, my favorite Donnie Iris song is That’s the Way Love Ought to Be.

@Botsplainer
Dunno if you recall the joke going around at the time about the Jean-Luc Picard doll.
You pull the string and it talks…

Being an African American chick from homewood (and Pittsbugers know where that is, but we did get a visit from Dr. Maddow once), I’m only somewhat familiar with Donny Iris, but I ynderstand that Bruce Springsteen holds him in great esteem.
p.a.
I have a cassette of the Iron City House rockers, but I forget if they were Pitt. or Cleveland, which is a big faux pas.

@p.a.
Iron City Ale.
All the taste is in the can. Literally.
Alex Milstein
Before he was Donnie Iris, he was Domenic Ierace, and he was lead singer for The Jaggerz…who were one-hit wonders with their 1970 smash, ‘The Rapper.’ It went to #2 on the charts.

IIRC Bruce is tight with Joe Gruscheky not, to my knowledge, Ellwood City’s greatest (presumably only) rock icon.
Uncle Cosmo
@Freemark: But it wasn’t. So suck it, yinzer. Wouldn’t have been that close if your cheating HC hadn’t stuck his fucking foot into the field of play to interfere with Jacoby’s KO return–or if the incompetent/bought-off zeeb that had to dodge the bastard as he ran down the sideline had flagged him & awarded JJ the TD he deserved. Even Belichick isn’t that blatant a cheater.
wenchacha
@Alex Milstein: Ahhh, the Jaggerz. I remember. Did they choose that name in tribute to the ‘burghian “jag-off”?
We had the best damn Thanksgiving I can remember in a long time. Both kids were at home, one from Port Townsend, WA, the other from down I-90 at U at Buffalo. The girl has been in Washington for about 1.5 years, and this is her first foray back home, after a successful couple of weeks on a fish-tendering boat. She and her brother have spoken more these last few days than perhaps the whole last two years before her move. They were just in totally different grooves. Now they are sharing apps, and videos, and playing games and talking about life. They haven’t been good buddies since a long time ago when they were little.
Tomorrow, the four of us in our nuclear family will head down I-90 to Erie, to see some of my sibs, my folks, and lots of cousins. I can’t remember the last time we took a car trip together. This is all pretty sweet for my husband and me. The son goes back to school on Sunday, so this reunion will be short-lived, but such a gift for us.
My daughter is hopeful that her brother can get out to the PNW to visit her, soon. He would love the outdoors, the woods and the ocean all right there to experience every day. Her Dad and I are hopeful she can find an inexpensive-ish place to live with her friends. The rental situation out there is slim-pickings, and pricey. I wish we could build her a tiny house. She has spent a little time living in her car, but has been able to grab a couch, most of the time. She hopes to fish in Alaska next summer, which would help her bottom line in a big way.
For all you parents and empty-nesters: I hope your children are well and happy with life.
Gravenstone
@Uncle Cosmo: Wait, someone bitching that the refs were cheating to reward the Steelers? Have you and Cole met? I think you bastards might cancel each other out and the universe would become infinitesimally more peaceful.
zonker
Donnie Iris is cool, but I still prefer The Iron City Houserockers.
thefax
Donnie Iris’ best was his attempt to get with the music that the kids were into, with the synthesizers and computers with the techno and the cyber stuff: ‘Do You Compute?’
Villago Delenda Est
The love for the Burgh is of course admirable and laudable.
However, a reminder on the pigskin front: The Seahawks are 10-1, and looking to secure home field advantage through the NFC playoffs.

@zonker: Seven words: Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band.
And all the Cleveland bands were really from Youngstahn, The Music Capital of the World.

@Yatsuno: Don’t yinz go down that slippy slope.

My 17 year old self would have said that Donnie Iris rules…everywhere.

Though I used to be a Donnie Iris fan “back in the day,” as the kids said back in the day, I think a better representative of Pittsburgh area music is Crack the Sky who were originally from Weirton, WV, but started in the Pittsburgh scene.
But then they only found what success they did in Baltimore. Which seems appropriate after last night’s game for reasons I can’t seem to explain.

@WereBear:
I HAVE the MTFHR C677T on from my mother and father. And I have RA. You’re saying there’s a connection?
Freemark
@Uncle Cosmo: Typical ratbird fan, even bitter when they win. Must be the inferiority complex that comes with being a Ravens fan. Actually, I have to say it may just be you. I know many ratbird fans living here in what is officially ratbird territory, according to the NFL, they are pretty reasonable and smart enough to know where Balttimore, south central PA, and Pittsburgh are on the map.

@karen: It’s well worth asking your doc about, as there is some compelling data to that effect. I have MS but haven’t checked my genome.
Uncle Cosmo
@Freemark: They can spell “Baltimore” properly, unlike you poor poor little inbred butthurt yinzers. Thanks for reminding me that however obnoxious New England sports fans may act, they at least have functioning brains & family trees that don’t look like bonsai.

“Ah Leah” is possibly the greatest song of the 20th century.
Cole Porter would have been proud to have written it.

@PopeRatzo: It’s been improved:
