Looks like it’s just you and me, kiddies (and I have a horrible cough, so I’m not sure how much fun I am going to be).

@Omnes Omnibus:
I was going with some nice Bundy rum I bought this week, but the plan is essentially the same…
Omnes Omnibus
@Sarah, Proud and Tall: Rum does the same thing. So does whiskey. Whatever the benefit, it comes from brown not clear booze – per the legends.
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@BD of MN:
Nice.

I’m all music’ed out after last night. I left it all on the field, coach.

I like batches and cookies (and cream). Do that group have a newsletter, by chance?
Edit and one of SPaT’s pieces is so over my head, as usual. I have no idea WTF it is.

Just found out my 13 year old niece was arrested (or maybe just cited, not sure on details) for having alcohol at school. Oy vey.
I guess I can be glad it wasn’t pot, so it was at least something that’s legal for *some* people, even if not her. But good lord.
Yatsuno
@Alison: Oh wow. That just screams help. I hope she has the resources to get the assistance she really needs right now.

Which one?

@Omnes Omnibus:
Speaking of which, at Christmas I found a nice little brandy glass (4" high, 7 ounces) at Crate & Barrel. I have never understood the need for a gigantic snifter. This glass is a good size for my two- or three-ounce dose of Rémy 1738, and it’s wide enough to get your nose in the bowl for sniffing purposes.

Lizzo topped all the local MN music charts in 2013 and (fwiw) made Time’s list of ten artists to watch in 2014…
And because MN is gifted with more than one talented woman who only uses one name, I give you Dessa:

@Yatsuno: Agreed; 13, wow.
On a related note, I found the bar that I got drunk the first time ever, in London. Unfortunately, I did that much too much.

@BD of MN:
I like that one too…

@Sarah, Proud and Tall: What the heck is Meishi Smile? Is that like Brian Eno for Anime or what?
I’ll check back tomorrow. I can’t get batches and cookies out of my head.

@Yatsuno: Yeeeah. Sadly, probably not. Her family life is…difficult. Apparently she doesn’t want to live at home anymore and said she wants to live with Grandma…meaning my mom and dad…where I live. In our apartment. Sooooooo no. Besides, she’d hate living here, she just thinks it would be better because her parents aren’t there because they’re being awful by, you know, being parents.
Sigh.
Alison
@Corner Stone: I don’t find that amusing, actually. Drinking at school at 13 is absolutely worrying, especially with what else might go along with that.
Hal
Working another night shift with my new co-worker who drinks ginger ale all night and burps constantly. But since she says excuse me after every belch, it’s all good!
FlipYrWhig
So… Is Drake supposed to be, you know, good at performing, singing, that general area? Because judging by the SNL showing, that was some tedious weak-ass shit.
Hal
@FlipYrWhig: Personally I think Drake is a terrible performer. He can’t rap or sing, and he bears more than a passing resemblance to that sloth from Ice Age. My younger cousins love him though.
FlipYrWhig
@Hal: Everything he spoke/sang was insanely repetitive. Started at the bottom, started at the bottom, started at the bottom, now we started at the bottom, started at the bottom, oh god write six more goddamn words to this stupid track.
FlipYrWhig
@Hal: is he supposed to be a performer for young kids? Or was he once? I don’t get it. In a weird gray area with no sexiness and no grit and yet also no craft. So what’s left? Feh, off my lawn you whippersnappers.
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@jl:
I’m not sure about that one myself. The website I got it from calls it “airy Japanese electropop”. Make of that what you will.
And yes, I’m wandering around the house humming “Batches & Cookies”.

@Corner Stone:
Old reliable, you are. Can always be counted on to be stupid.

Thank you. I like the Drenge song…

England got 243. This could be tricky for Australia.

Was in a small local record store today when the kid behind the counter put on “The Who Sell Out.” Looked around and it was obvious that I was the only person in the place who was alive when that record first came out.
I am so damn old.
SarahT
@Sarah, Proud and Tall: glad you liked it ! just saw them last night. They’re adorable teenage brothers whose grandparents are probably my age. Oy vey…

Heads-up to anyone still up who gets Turner Classics : Two awesonely craptastic acid-is-bad movies ! “Skidoo” is on right now, followed by “The Big Cube”. Both are batshit insane & feature washed-up stars who have LSD freak-outs- yay !
Elizabelle
@SarahT: Just websurfed re Skiddoo, because what a clusterf*ck. Epic. What have we done to TCM?
The one good line:
You’re a hippie, right?
If you’re into labeling, yeah.
Radio One
favorite song of 2013 for me was “Brave” by Sarah Bareilles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQsqBqxoR4

@burnspbesq:
Yes you are.

@Radio One: Sara Bareilles lends some vocals to Dan Wilson’s (Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic) latest:

@Elizabelle: I know, right ? Can you even believe people like Kirk Douglas and Burgess Meredith and Groucho agreed to be in this train wreck ? Poor groucho retired from movies afterwards – hard to blame him, really.
Glocksman
Sharing a few of my favorite covers that IMHO are as good as if not better than the original:
Matraca Berg’s cover of Jolene
I always liked this song, but couldn’t stand Dolly Parton’s voice.
Matraca Berg hit it squarely on the head.
The Kentucky Headhunters cover of Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine
Not your standard country group. They also did a cover of ‘Skip a Rope’ that l like, but Youtube doesn’t have it.
This isn’t a cover, but Steve Earle’s Snake Oil has a message that’s still relevant today.

@Sarah T
re: Skidoo, gave the heads up this past Wednesday. That the film did not spontaneously leap from the camera and strangle the director, crew and cast is a wonderment.
Marx, at 78, had to be insistently cajoled to return to movies for this one. Gleason, Channing, etc., however, were far, far from being has-beens when the mess was produced.
So far as The Big Cube is concerned, Lana Turner attempting to play the Lana Turner she was in her 20s is not quite as discommoding as was, say, Mae West in Sextette, but a close second.
Punchy
@burnspbesq: Pretty sure that the mere fact that you know what records were and was in a shop to purchase them is the very definition of “old”. Did you also seek out 8-tracks, phonograph cylinders, or 12″ laserdiscs?
Glocksman
@burnspbesq:
I was born that year. Does that count?
@Punchy:
I can’t speak for him, but I used to own an 8-track recorder* and a couple of Pioneer and Yamaha LD players.
LD players and discs continued to be produced until DVD took off in the late 1990’s.
Now you’re really showing your age if you remember the RCA SelectaVision CED Videodisc Player
*the only place I could even find blank 8-track tapes was at Radio Shack.
Cassidy
@FlipYrWhig: Drake is a decent rapper who really only shines in other people’s tracks.
Botsplainer
@SarahT:
Oh, God – Skidoo is back on rotation? Hippies and gangsters was the worst idea ever, and adding Carol Channing just made it unwatchable. Plus, Groucho was decidedly unfunny.
Two wasted hours.
