Friday: Detroit/Atlanta/Birmingham – Tuscaloosa
Saturday: 13 hour workday in Tuscaloosa
Sunday: Tuscaloosa-Birmingham/Atlanta/Charlotte
Monday: Charlotte/Atlanta/Portland – Vancouver WA.
I’ll get home (Detroit) at some point but right now it’s planes, rental cars, factories and hotels for a while.
And this is my 3rd trip to the west coast in 4 weeks.
I really need to go somewhere not entirely man-made and sit until my head stops buzzing.
Police: Officers fatally shot 2 men who opened fire outside Garland, Texas, center hosting Muhammad art event
The organizer of this ‘Muhammad art event’ is none other than the SPLC-idenified hate group American Freedom Defense Initiative co-founded by the shreiking harpy herself, Pamela Gellar. Allegedly this group was offering a $10,000 award for the best drawing entered.

I need travel advice from West Virginia Juicers. We will be driving away from Barn With Inn, which is above Wheeling, on May 13, headed for Green Bank and a Thursday tour of the radio astronomy telescope site. Where in the world do people stay overnight that is close enough to Green Bank to get there by 11 a.m.?
Plus, Barn With Inn turned out to be the prime destination for this little road trip. We built the whole thing around getting there. And if they are as nice as their emails we may not want to leave.

Apparently Rick Perry is going to announce his candidacy on June 1. One more clown for the car, wooooo.
Hillary’s key moment came when she was elected to be the first student in Wellesley college history to give its commencement address, a powerful speech that received a seven-minute standing ovation.
According to a 1993 article in the Boston Globe, even then, some of her fellow Wellesley students believed she may one day be the first female president of the United States.

Well, a couple things are clear. They intend on doing both the entire fourth and fifth book this season.. We’re also way off the book.
Former Gov. Rick Perry often boasts about a strong Texas economy and shares his die-hard belief in less intrusive government. One accomplishment he fails to mention: He presided over the creation of a secretive statewide surveillance detection network put in place by former FBI agents with assistance from former CIA personnel.
That’s right, a statewide surveillance network designed by a Virginia-based company (run by former spooks) and purchased via contracts (complete with generous finder’s fees) by the tax payers of Texas who seem to be shielded from ever learning the details of the deal …Not unlike TPP, it seems.
Otherwise just nursing my Krav Maga wounds still. Class #2 tomorrow yay!

I got to work with a famous type person. It went fairly well. I’m always leery of famous type people. But I’m rather cheesed that after a lot of restraint and focus on the business to be done, the picture for my mom was badly done. This is what happens when I”m not behind the camera. Getting back on the workout schedule nearly killed me but at least I did it. Also, I made this kick ass lamb shank roast with garlic mashed cauliflower and a masticated kale and golden beet salad. I recommend it. Now I can rest for the rest of the weekend. That’s what, 3 hours?

Pamela Geller, an organizer of the event, spoke to to CBS 11 from lockdown via phone at 7:45p CT. In addition to echoing our ground team, she told a news producer, “I heard officers talking of possible explosions in backpacks and the car.”

@Kay Eye: I’ve been to Cass Scenic Railroad many times, just south of Greenbank, but nearly always we’ve gone in the RV. We once stayed at Boyer Station, a slightly shabby 70’s style roadside motel with an attached restaurant that apparently the locals enjoy. If you need upscale, there are plenty of motels at the Snowshoe ski resort on up (way up) the mountain from Cass.
@Steeplejack (phone): And preferably a really big screen. This is one of those movies that is really best seen in a movie theater.

@Tracy Ratcliff: Thank you, Tracy. Boyer Station might work, I wasn’t looking South of Green Bank. Not too far away, but everything seems to be on a winding mountain road. Distances all seem to be 12 miles on the back of a crow, 3 hours by car. I’ll work on it.
@Kay Eye: The big tourist draws in that area are Snowshoe and Cass Scenic, with the radio observatory being distant third. Boyer Station is right on WV 28, so it’s a (fairly) straight shot down the road to the observatory.
41.
Tracy Ratcliff
@Tracy Ratcliff: From google maps, it’s about 5 miles from the visitor’s center. My two-million-miles-of-semi-driving partner said the roads from Snowshoe to Cass were “damned twisty”
I guess the good news is that people who have read the books are just as lost as those who haven’t.

@Tracy Ratcliff: Thank you for helping me sort that out. I had stumbled on to a cycle club’s map from Boyer to Green Bank to Boyer to Greenbrier, a 55-mile trip. Navigation is not my forte.

A great film, great story, great performances. Mifune’s speech is pretty good, too.
But I gotta say – and maybe it’s just a case of “everything was better back in my day” – but I’m underwhelmed by the Criterion Collection version. Something about it just doesn’t seem right. Doesn’t keep me from watching it, of course – nor Yojimbo nor Sanjuro – but, still …

@Kay Eye: Snowshoe Ski resort, which offers summer outdoor stuff after the snow melts, is pretty close. Cass Scenic Railroad has 20 “company houses” that can accommodate 4-20 guests, and they get good scores from Tripadvisor. Also Franklin, WV, and Marlinton WV have motels, not fancy, but OK, Seneca State Forest has “pioneer” cabins, but those may be sold out already, they’re pretty popular. Franklin is the furthest, just over an hour. Everything will be rustic but Snowshoe.
Snowshoe and Cass are the closest, less than an hour. Elkins is just over an hour, so Buckhannon will be another half hour on top of that.

@jayackroyd: I was thinking the same thing. Not that many GoT fans over here I guess.
They are going off book, I think partly because the show is being produced faster than the books.
The book is way too complex to stay on. But I expected subplots to be dropped and simplified. Character changes of this magnitude is more surprising.

I am getting bored with this show. It keeps glorifying the 1% in our society. I am tired of all the good people dying and the villains alwasy getting what they want. The show needs to be more up lifting for a change. Yes, I know it is to be a dark fantasy, but in these times we need something on the 99% side too.
