So, summary of the Hillary event in Alexandria this morning — Good, enthusiastic crowd. It took a while to build, but by the time the speechifying started the plaza was full.
Hillary gave a very good speech. She devoted a good bit of it to recapping how Obama rescued the economy despite relentless opposition from Republicans, and declared that he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. She specifically mentioned Biden, saying she agrees with him that the Obama record is worth defending. She mentioned the law exempting the gun industry from liability, and how it was a present to the NRA, but didn’t mention Bernie, which is probably the best way to handle the issue. (It can’t really be called negative campaigning if she only mentions positive things about herself that he happens not to share.) Talked a lot about family leave, minimum wage, college affordability, voting rights. Plenty of good applause lines and some good stories.
The only things I would fault the campaign for were having the initial (brief) speakers, and then nothing for a long time before Hillary and McAuliffe came out. (Long waits are par for the course, but the big gap in the middle wasn’t.) More important, for an event that was billed as a grassroots organizing event (even though it was really a rally), there wasn’t enough organizing going on. Most likely this was because there isn’t going to be any campaign activity or offices until close to the primary in March, but it would have been good to at least try to get people to commit to something.
But overall, it was a fun event, a good speech, and I got to stand ten feet in front of the next president, which is pretty darn cool.
