    A 10-year-old Afghan boy who was declared a hero after fighting the Taliban has been shot dead by insurgents while on his way to school, officials said Wednesday.

    Wasil Ahmad, who had fought the Taliban alongside his uncle on many occasions, was killed Monday near his home in Tirin Kot, the capital of the southern Uruzgan province, said deputy police chief Rahimullah Khan.

    @MomSense: We’re starting to try to pare down stuff in anticipation of moving eventually. I dread it; we’ve been here for 12 years and have so much crap. I can’t bear to undertake a large project like a closet or shed right now, so we’re doing a strategy of filling one bag each per week. Could be stuff to throw out, stuff to donate, stuff to put aside for a yard sale. Anyhoo, it’s a way to feel like we’re doing something without doing a whole lot. Given our lengthy time horizon, that works for us.

    @Betty Cracker: Personally of course, I have found with big projects it’s best to plan ahead and throw your full commitment at it on that day/s. And two, big projects are often not as big as you think when you dedicate yourself to them.

    For instance, I’m sure you and your husband could accomplish any household cleaning project you wished if you both dedicated 8 hours each over a weekend. You can get a lot done in a dedicated 8 hours.

    Do it once and it’s done for a while.

    @Betty Cracker: That’s why I mentioned the planning ahead. You schedule the weekend of X to tackle Y, and you both commit to it.

    You can still drink beer and play darts but also give up one weekend to accomplish a big task. And then it’s done, and you’ll feel so much better.

    @redshirt: It’s good advice, but my husband and I have been married nearly 20 years, and “sensible” is not in our vocabularies. We just don’t roll that way. It’s probably for the best. We might be more dangerous if we were organized.

    @Betty Cracker: Yes, I’m doing well. I’ll be watching the Kitten Bowl. One former boyfriend tried to teach me about football, and I’d watch it with him but I never really liked it or understood it. (And that wasn’t a problem for us; as long I’d watch it with him I was keeping him company and that’s all that mattered.)

    ETA: I do sometimes read the football threads because being BJ you don’t what tangents to the thread will appear.

    My point being is that what seem like YUUUUGE projects from your seat aren’t really so when you throw yourself at them. You can finish big works in short periods of concentrated effort.

    I’ve spent the last year really getting my house in order. Remodeling helps some with this. My brother passed a few weeks ago, and now I have a house to sell. Luckily he was very organized with minimal stuff, so it shouldn’t be too bad. The freaky thing is, I knew he was a tightwad, but holy hell, he had a shitload of money.

    Trust me, it’s a lot easier when you live alone.

    Housemates very, very rarely have the same big chunks of time available — and when they (we) get them, we usually need or want to do more fun (or essential) tasks than decluttering/housecleaning.

    The Spousal Unit (being a Virgo) wants to clear out a big space, dump all the boxes he’s been filling up with random cruft, and spend as long as it takes to sort out every last worn sock or long-expired receipt. Meanwhile, the grocery shopping got put off (again), nobody can get into the kitchen past the stacks of Don’tMoveThat!, and we’re both getting ever-more-cranky because we’re hungry & exhausted. Also, my dust allergies are acting up, the cats keep chasing each other across the sorted papers, and one of our rescue dogs has ‘marked’ an essential pile while our attention was distracted.

    I’ve discovered it’s much less stressful for everybody if I pick one target closet/drawer/shelving unit/corner, get a little bit sorted & cleaned, and be willing to resist the temptation of just-one-more-thing when the dogs are whining, my blood sugar is dropping, and it’s an hour past bedtime the night before a major appointment.

    Baby steps, Betty. I like your “one bag a week” theory, but we’re both ADD; we have a ‘one item into each person’s discard/donate/recycle bag every day’ equivalent.

    @ruemara: I use several different apps, depending on the device. Don’t know any of them well — it’s just something fun to fool around with. The one on this post was Morpholio for iPad. I think my favorite is Sketches (Tayasui) — I use that one more than any other, also on iPad.
