I’m able to get up without an alarm clock, even on about five hours sleep… but consistently, for the past five years now, the Monday after DST screws me up royally. Still got to work, but had all of fifteen minutes to get ready.
Of course, it doesn’t help when you wake up with a blinding sinus headache. The silver lining… go to work, may as well feel bad there instead of at home and still get paid.
We had a great weekend. It was in the 40’s both days and we actually saw part of our front lawn since the first week in December. We took the girls out for a nice leisurely bike ride around town and enjoy the warm sun.
This morning I wake up and it’s snowing like January. The lawn is gone again but it isn’t cold out (about 30F) so the snow will start melting by tomorrow.
By the middle of 2008, for example, American households had build up debt of $13.9 trillion, more than double what it was a decade before. Businesses had accumulated debt of $10.9 trillion, also doubling in a decade. And financial institutions had piled up debt of $16.6 trillion, up from $6.3 trillion in 1998.
And the federal government? During that same period — drum roll — its debt rose from $3.8 trillion to $5.3 trillion.
He’s one of the few financial columnists writing today that I have a lot of respect for and makes reasonable arguments that place blame where they belong. With Wall Street and Banking institutions. I highly recommend you go back and read his archived columns.
I got a letter from the German Social Security telling me that they are actually going to ask for the 8,700 euros in back taxes. Thank god they are happy with 50euros/month backpayments.
I’m typing up chapter 2 of my new novel, The Newropean and trying to stay warm.
I’m so glad that I don’t live in the States. I swear I wouldn’t know what was happening because there is so much disinformation on cable news it’s insane.
John, you haven’t been posting as much lately and I’m dying out here in Old Europe, you and thinkprogress are the first two blogs I check each day for news!

It is bad that I’d rather have a decent breakfast burrito in the morning than nail the girlfriend?
Eggs, bacon, cheese, salsa, with no heavy breathing and calls for "cuddling". Amirite?
For some reason, the morning after DST in Spring I’m always perkier – it fades fairly quickly, but today even though I woke up an "hour earlier" I was more energetic.
I’m in a weird mood – I feel like I’m ready to start some major project – but there’s nothing going on.

I have something that will cheer your rainy (at least here in central new york state) monday. Yesterday was my youngest son’s 14th birthday. It was a big deal as he is the youngest grandson on both sides. So a big family dinner ensued in which presents were given. I think this one 14 year old is responsible for a small uptick in spending in our area. Tech tools abounded, from a brand new ipod touch, to the crowning touch, a brand new, bought just for him laptop. (he had currently suffered through hand me downs which passed from his father, to me, his brothers and finally to him). Looking back I don’t think he has ever had any tech that didn’t at one point belong to someone else prior to his possession of it. I also have to admit our sons are products of geek love (As my prickly 17 year old puts it, it is sad that he actually looks forward to our sunday afternoons of playing wow together) my husband is an engineer and i am a very geeky healthcare professional. So this morning over breakfast I asked my baby….How was your birthday yesterday….he being the snarky smart ass he is said.."Perfect Mom, in fact I would say it was gizmogasmic!
GIZMOGASMIC! My husband snorted milk across the table, we all laughed so hard that the dog was going crazy. So, new tech now equals a gizmogasm in our house!
I thought I was doing alright with the time change, especially as I slept in comfortably Sunday morning, but I couldn’t drag myself out of bed before 9 this morning. Good thing I work at home.

The time change really screwed me up. Didn’t know what time it was this morning when I awoke. Half the clocks in the house say one thing, the other half say something else.
It’ll be that way until I get the step ladder out.

I’d like Tim’s thoughts on the SP-Merck merger. What a friggin’ monster company that will result. And this comes on the heels of the Wyeth-Pfizer merger. Nothing but a few ginormous, titanic pharma companies gunna survive this downturn.
And I can’t wait to see the political clout such insanely large companies will have w/r/t healthcare reform and drug pricing. Methinks they will have quite a deleterious effect on effective reforms.
@Face:
I for one welcome our new pharmaceutical masters. That said, why aren’t there any competitiveness or anti-trust issues being raised? They went on for weeks when Sirius and X-M satellite wanted to merge and that had a hell of a lot less effect on people’s everyday lives.

We’ve had over 8" of rain since Friday night with prediction of another 2-3" tonight. The flooding on the small river below our house is at a level I’ve never seen before, and that includes the record years of 1993 and 2008. I’m on my way down the hill to see if I can save my canoe, which is/was tied at a spot I thought was safe. I can see from the road that it’s just about to go downstream. If I can get to it, I can probably winch it out. If not, well, it’s an old canoe anyway.
I have an Advil PM ‘hangover.’ It’s supposed to be 80-85, humid, with a small chance of rain. BTW, I’m wanting to spruce up my dungy apartment with a fresh coat of paint. Does anyone have any brands that they recommend? 6-7 years ago my ex and I used Martha Stewart paint from K-Mart and it was surprisingly good. But it’s probably changed since then. Any ideas?
Punchy, it is natural. I do recommend fatherhood though.
Personally I am excited because today I have a meeting with the government man, not to be confused with the man with the two desks. But it is snowing again, so we will see.
I was feeling fairly neutral about this morning until I read your cheery post. Now I say ‘Blah’ too. DST kind of sucks, although this morning I managed to be about 10 minutes less late for work than usual.
yeah, well i have a 9-week old, and she sure as shit doesn’t believe in DST either.
then again, i don’t think she believes in time at all.
…chopper, up since god-knows when

Benjamin Moore paint is a little pricey, but I found that you don’t have to use as much of it, and they have a great selection of colors.
Behr paint from Home Depot is good, too, and they have a neat color selector online and in the store. It’s definitely cheaper than Benjamin Moore, and if you go on the weekends, Home Depot has a lot of mistints that aren’t bad that are really cheap. We found the color for my son’s bedroom on a mistint table, a wonderful creamy color just shy of yellow.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is planning to announce Monday the hiring of nine wounded or disabled veterans into House staff positions as part of the “Wounded Warrior” program. The program is intended to help wounded veterans, including those who have lost arms and legs in the conflict, make the sometimes difficult transition back to civilian life

Instead of changing the clocks an hour in the spring & back an hour in the fall, why can’t we split the difference at 30 minutes & then leave the clocks alone?

My work schedule is so varied, with relatively few early-morning launches required, that the time changes usually don’t affect me one way or the other. But I found myself oddly energized by this one. Maybe because it was synchronous with lingering late-winter cold (and the worst snowstorm of the season) suddenly going Galt into balmy 70° sunniness. And it feels nice to have more light in the evening. Sundown went from 6:10 to 7:10 at my secure but undisclosed location. I don’t mind having less light in the morning; that will change as the days get longer.
