Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

We will not go back.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Overnight Open Thread: Fishing for Raven

Not actually trying to catch members of genus corvus, but a couple of fishing videos for Raven who seems to be up late these days as he’s convalescing. With my luck of picking videos tonight he’s probably seen these, but its the thought that counts, right…

First up a 3 year old catches a big (relative to her) catfish:

And here’s someone landing a very large (and very dangerous) alligator gar:

There’s a photo of a huge river sturgeon (dubbed pig nosed) that was caught recently that will give you nightmares. It belongs on one of those River Monster shows.

I have a family of Ravens and Crows living nearby.
They don’t intermingle and don’t seem to fight either.
Like, they leave the other completely alone.

From my perspective they’re sometimes hard to separate. From afar the only way to tell the difference is size, with Ravens generally larger than crows, though of course sometimes there’s some really big crows.

We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

The old man had great stories of upper Midwest fishing for pike and muskie and catfish. One that “got away” after hours of dragging his boat around was probably a paddlefish, but he never knew for sure. Salmon is as big as I’ve landed. Saw a sturgeon once in a nearby river and it might as well have been a small submarine.

@redshirt: If it makes you feel any better, for those of us in the US it’s often tomorrow somewhere.

There’s a ripping good yarn called Pact: Devils and Details. It’s a web serial in the urban fantasy/demonology vein. One of the supernatural beasties is a spirit that goes by the name of Corvidae, who was long ago built/summoned/shaman’d up by the first peoples up round Toronto somewhere. He’s represented as a skinny, bony man with sharp eyes and straight, jet black hair, wearing mid-19th-century gentleman’s clothes that you nonetheless feel aren’t his. He’s happy to help you and comes whenever you summon him, but unless you’re a native, as his price he always steals something of yours and puts it somewhere that will turn out to bite you in the ass later on.

I don’t know why but this is like seared into my brain. Great character. I think he has like four lines.

I saw on the local news here last night that a bear has taken up residence in the Santa Monica mountains. First bear that’s been sighted there in 200 years.

Heh, there’s a river and a freeway between me and the mountains. Actually 3 freeways(405, 101, and 5) from where the bear was sighted.

@James E Powell: It’s about a bear who’s new to town and wants to get his screenplay published, but life is hard around the Santa Monica mountains. The MFA bear schools are just churning out so many bear writers nowadays that the protagonist bear is having a hard time making an impression. He doesn’t have the refinement that these SoCal woodland types expect; he doesn’t catch the right references at parties or wear his fur in this year’s style; they see him as just some bear from the boonies. You know, he’s kind of lonely and he eats too much honey. It’s a little sad. It’s really more of a mood piece. The bear is hoping to run into Sofia Coppola.

    @?BillinGlendaleCA:
In the Sierra foothill gold country is a town called Cool. Couple weeks ago a family there found a colt had been killed by a mountain lion in its paddock. Fish and Wildlife issued a permit to take the lion and a tracker was obtained. They left the carcass out to lure the lion so the tracker would I.D. the culprit. Only problem was during the night a bear stole it. The cat’s still out there.

Coincidentally the kid and I are rafting the river up there tomorrow. Far tastier folks will be around so I’m watching for poison oak.

Pity…I mean, not about the content of the videos, or the fact that they are for Raven, but the concept of “fishing for ravens” is kind of awesome.

There’s an enormous raven (are they ever anything *but* enormous?) that has started to hang out up at the hunting kennels. His name is, of course, Edgar.

That is, I presume it’s a “he”. Does anyone know anything about sexing ravens?

By golly that little girl is persistent ! Unusual in a 3-year-old. Most of them would be throwing down the pole and whining after a minute….
