Bye bye Bill-O, and now the Chafetz news. Plenty still that’s fucked up in America. But bright patches are appearing in the skies.
eta: Of course he’ll still be working all the RW angles and grifts, but never with the same size platform as he had on Fox. He’ll be in a lesser orbit from now on.

You could see that one coming.
I suspect old Rupert was ready to push him out too, but played the loyal boss. The better to keep it in the news.

I posted below that I would have preferred that Billo stayed. He’s old and his demo is aging so his influence is likely to decline. Fox will probably replace him with someone who offers the same odious BS but is younger and more likely to appeal a younger audience. Billo’s scandals were well known, so I view this as a convenient excuse to replace him rather a principled stand against harassment.

I especially liked the comment of the one guy when told this food bank may close if Trump’s budget passes. “I grow most of my own food anyway.” he said while holding a box full of free groceries.

My understanding is that Fox got rid of O’Reilly so they can take full control of SKY UK Ltd., a telecommunications company that covers all of the UK [thanks, Wikipedia!]. UK has some sort of ‘morals/ethics’ requirement that had to be met before Murdoch could swallow the company whole, so Bill had to go. So, yeah, it’s fun to see O’Reilly fall out of favor, but Fox gets even more powerful. There’s a dark, dank cloud over every silver lining…

Excellent news. He’s still obscenely wealthy and has the ability to go on profiting from his shitty books, but the bottom line is, he’s being publicly fired. He thought he was powerful enough to coerce women into sex with no consequences (and why wouldn’t he, with Ailes as his boss for so many years), but in the end, the fallout from his sleazy-ass behavior became enough of a liability to cause his dismissal. One major process you see in racism is Underpants Gnome thinking. Once the Other is put in their place, everything will be fine. Like that woman in Kentucky who was surviving on Obamacare, and voted for Bevin specifically because he said he would take it away. She said that once the moochers were removed from the system, she would easily be able to get a job good enough to pay all her medical costs. As far as I know there is no cure for this. They can blame any new failure on the Other. The endorphin rush from venting their hate is a constant, major reinforcement for this delusion. It would take successful genocide, the complete removal of the Other, to break that chain of thought – and they would just redraw the lines to create some new Other.

This. IMO, this also highlights one of the biggest differences between liberals and conservatives. Both liberals and conservatives want the world to be fair, but they disagree about what fair means. Conservatives are worried that somebody is cheating the system to get more than their share, and they’re willing to deny things to people who ought to have them in order to punish cheaters. Liberals are worried that the system is cheating people by denying them what they deserve, and they’re willing to let some cheaters get things they shouldn’t have to make sure everyone gets their due. Yep. This is a surprising, but welcome result. Surprising given the mood of parts of the country. And also surprising in that O’Reilly’s removal was relatively swift.
But I’m thinking that Murdoch believes that O’Reilly and the revenues he brought to Fox can be easily replaced.
Still, for now “Happy, happy. Joy! Joy!”

@The Moar You Know: Yeah, even here in liberal California I am constantly amazed that white people are so prejudiced. There has been trouble at both the junior high and high schools with white kids threatening to call ICE on brown kids they know are vulnerable. I was invited to join a “private neigborhood group” called nextdoor.com and people in my neighborhood are putting up links to PR puff pieces from the border patrol that just in the last two weeks they arrested 28 illegal criminals, including five murderers! The last one got the most likes of anything posted, including two people praising our new president and another saying she can’t wait for the wall. So stupid. And when I objected I was at first ignored, but when I did it again I got threatened to be expelled! Racism is way more ingrained than I ever realized and I feel naive and stupid and powerless to fight it sometimes, but fight it I will.

Both liberals and conservatives want the world to be fair
Can’t agree with that part.
Conservatives want the law to bind people that it does not protect (others),
and to protect people whom it does not bind (themselves).
They want tax dollars for Christianist schools, but will raise holy hell if a tax dollar goes to support a Muslim school.

Two stupid WWC stories: a friend has a sister (an RN) who is addicted to opiods, and their parents are always bailing her out, making excuses, enabling her. The main reason she’s like this and won’t go into rehab according to the parents? Obamacare ruined everything and “they only care about helping blacks and Spaniards”. Not ” Hispanics “, somewhere they picked up ” Spaniards ” as pejorative.
Chatting with a very young sales clerk in one of CO’s legal weed stores and told him I hadn’t been in since January because I was afraid of a sudden crackdown. He went on to say it can’t happen here, too much state taxes, blah blah, and besides “Trump is doing what he said he’d do and it has been a long time since we had a President who stuck to their promises”. His tone was that he approved. It really shocked me, not so much that he was young but given his current job…..

Interesting test. In Sweden, fines for speeding tickets are a percentage of your income. Millionaires can wind up with $100,000 fines for going 15 over the limit. But it’s based on how many days worth of spending you lose. Sounds completely fair to me. To a conservative, “fair” means everyone pays a $500 fine (the average), to a liberal fair means everyone loses the same amount of labor.

Interesting. Even Murdoch realizes that he needs to start appealing to a slightly younger demographic.
Still, very happy to see O’Reilly go.
One of the people who recently spoke out against him was Wendy Walsh, a psychology professor and radio personality who appears on the biggest English language station here, KFI. She recounted a troubling incident that occurred when she was being considered for a Fox news commentary job. Her statements about what happened were calm, precise, and emphasized that she was not after either money or publicity in coming forward. I don’t know her in real life, but appreciate her professionalism and respect her, and am extra gratified to know that O’Reilly has been knocked down off his perch and that a bully and predator has gotten a bit of a public lashing.

@Mnemosyne: Jeff Zucker is on record saying that having crazy people on the panel say crazy things is what he wants. He doesn’t care about news. He just wants people yelling and especially wants far right people yelling crazy things that upset sane people so that the network can spend the next five hours discussing said crazy person’s crazy outburst. And they all hang out together after the show and Jeffrey Lord is “a good guy.”
It’s not even infotainment; it’s disinfotainment. Distract-a-tainment. Propaganda-tainment. It’s empty and devoid of meaning as far as news and informing the public go. It means nothing except for how it might bring more eyeballs and clicks to CNN. The entire network–all the cable news networks, really–need to go. They can spin off some sister network of crazy people yelling at each other, but they should not be allowed to call that news.

The irony is that Bill O. is actually the (relatively) least factually-challenged and politically offensive among Fox’s stable of political show-hosts – albeit because the set under consideration is Fox political show-hosts, I’m grading on an ENORMOUS curve, because the set I’m comparing him to includes the likes of Hannity and Tucker Carlson, and “relatively least factually challenged and offensive” isn’t the same at all as “not factually challenged and inoffensive.” NOR am I implying that Bill O. doesn’t deserve to get fired for his sexual harassment of females at the network, nor am I implying that O’Reilly isn’t a huge asshole. Rather, my comment is that the competition for biggest asshole among Fox political show-hosts is stiff indeed, stiff enough that bad as O’Reilly is, he’s not even the worst among them.
