A side question raised by the D.C. shooting: Will GOP members of Congress who have pushed so-called “birther” legislation in Congress drop this crusade, now that it’s emerging that the suspected shooter may have been a “birther,” too?
TPM has unearthed a writing of James von Brunn that seems to show that he’s a “birther,” one of those hearty souls who’s questioning the legitimacy of Obama’s election because he isn’t a natural born American citizen.
The point is not that the “birther” talk is directly to blame for violence like this. But it seems fair to ask whether this kind of stuff, and related fringe wackitude, is playing some kind of role in helping egg it on at a moment when Obama’s agenda is coming into focus.
I think the answer is probably “no”. The members who are pushing it are the lunatic fringe of a party that is itself the lunatic fringe of the country. I don’t see them backing down now.

Let’s face it, even when the conservatives controlled all three branches of the government, they still essentially saw themselves as the persecuted and the victimized, trying to sow the seeds of righteousness in a culture of sin.
And that was when they were IN power.
Now, they’re not just out of power. They are out of favor. Their ideas are completely discredited. At long last, victimization and persecution is all they have left, and it will achieve a potency we have not yet fully seen. Every time one of their own kills someone, it just ups the stakes.
Murder is a straight edge. Right now, conservatives are seeing a few of their comrades taking the philosophy to its logical conclusion, and they are going to have to make up their own mind about the legitimacy of these conclusions.
And the more these murders happen, the more they will be seen as part of a movement instead of individual crimes. The cries of murder will start transmuting into euphemisms of war and off we go into violent extremism on our soil.
This is just the beginning. This is a very small group of people, but like other terrorists, they can do a lot of damage. As Americans, we haven’t seen violent insurrection in a while, but history proves that this is an anomaly. Never underestimate the lengths people will go to in pursuit of their place in heaven.

Are you kidding? It’s still going on, triggered by DailyKos, carried by a website that is frequently quoted here and is completely ANTI-conservative, and was the subject of multiple ethics complaints carried out by people who are trying to use it to oust the legitimately-elected governor of Alaska.
The problem here is that you simply can’t apply the same exacting rules of proof. Let Obama produce his birth certificate like you demanded Palin do. Let Obama submit to DNA testing like you demanded Palin do. Acknowledge the likelihood that Obama faked his records, as you insisted Palin did. Oh, I freely admit that Ted Kaczynski was left wing. Wasn’t a Dem or even a green, but was definitely on the left side of the political divide. I believe, though, that he acted on his own and that there were not any left-wing pundits in the Glen Beck or Michael Savage mold that were stoking the resentment, anger, or other emotions that impelled Ted K. to send his letter bombs. Problem with the right wing side is that they use the incendiary language and then refuse to accept any responsibility if/when people who listen to them act violently. The writer of the piece also had found, in the archives of the Honolulu newspaper, the announcement about Obama’s birth at a local hospital. Guess what? I can’t find that story anywhere and KO said tonight that the proprietor of Worldnet now denies that it ever appeared. Damn. I knew I should have archived the thing. I think it appeared back in August sometime.

The hilarity of that post was that I was being bashed regardless of the number of partners. If it was zero, I was a loser. If it was more, I was promiscuous. It became obvious that, no matter what the number, it was going to be wrong — which made it obvious how bigoted and prejudiced the question was in the first place.
