Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

People are weird.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

The words do not have to be perfect.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Giving up is unforgivable.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Birthers of a nation

Greg Sargent asks a good question:

A side question raised by the D.C. shooting: Will GOP members of Congress who have pushed so-called “birther” legislation in Congress drop this crusade, now that it’s emerging that the suspected shooter may have been a “birther,” too?

TPM has unearthed a writing of James von Brunn that seems to show that he’s a “birther,” one of those hearty souls who’s questioning the legitimacy of Obama’s election because he isn’t a natural born American citizen.

The point is not that the “birther” talk is directly to blame for violence like this. But it seems fair to ask whether this kind of stuff, and related fringe wackitude, is playing some kind of role in helping egg it on at a moment when Obama’s agenda is coming into focus.

I think the answer is probably “no”. The members who are pushing it are the lunatic fringe of a party that is itself the lunatic fringe of the country. I don’t see them backing down now.

If the birthers in congress had known their actions would lead to this they would have started much, much sooner.

    >>a writing of James von Brunn

some of the comments in an earlier thread raised a question about whether Mr. von Brunn was the author of that piece, or merely posted a copy of it, which was then reposted on FR or RS.

I don’t think it matters much at the end of the day, but we ought to get the attribution right–before it becomes a diversion from a legitimate discussion

Thinking about the birther connections and the profound racism of von Brunn is worthwhile. But it just struck me how friggin crazy you have to be to attack a museum.

Should the Left start fielding law and order candidates? Today’s shooting just creeped me out and has bothered me more than other, similar events. On any given weekday, the Holocaust Museum has a steady stream of kids entering and exiting it.

Jeez. Just totally creeped out by this.

If anything the entire GOP should apologize for being a disgrace to this country and driving it into the ditch.

    I agree.

Let’s face it, even when the conservatives controlled all three branches of the government, they still essentially saw themselves as the persecuted and the victimized, trying to sow the seeds of righteousness in a culture of sin.

And that was when they were IN power.

Now, they’re not just out of power. They are out of favor. Their ideas are completely discredited. At long last, victimization and persecution is all they have left, and it will achieve a potency we have not yet fully seen. Every time one of their own kills someone, it just ups the stakes.

Murder is a straight edge. Right now, conservatives are seeing a few of their comrades taking the philosophy to its logical conclusion, and they are going to have to make up their own mind about the legitimacy of these conclusions.

And the more these murders happen, the more they will be seen as part of a movement instead of individual crimes. The cries of murder will start transmuting into euphemisms of war and off we go into violent extremism on our soil.

This is just the beginning. This is a very small group of people, but like other terrorists, they can do a lot of damage. As Americans, we haven’t seen violent insurrection in a while, but history proves that this is an anomaly. Never underestimate the lengths people will go to in pursuit of their place in heaven.

As I just said to another thread, the birther crap is lies.

It is lies, and needs to be treated as lies, whether it comes from this crazy bastard who went shooting today, or from our own BOB, things need to be said clearly.

We have a tendency to think that a “lunatic fringe” is just something to wince at, until it blows up a federal building, or shoots a doctor, or assassinates a presidential candidate, or a president. Or attacks a museum. Or spreads lies on a blog.

This is serious stuff. That’s not just me talking, that’s Fox News talking as of about 3:30 pm EDT today.

Why be creeped out? We’re a nation that kills each other, plain and simple. We also export our killing all over the globe, and yet, one wacko with a fucked up view of the world, completely detached from reality creeps us out?

George Bush is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of human beings and maiming of hundreds of thousands of others, and this creeps you out?

Hate-filled murderers are a dime a dozen in this country, our history is filled with incidents very similar to this one. White, self-identified Christian men have been killing and villifying Jews from the moment the first Crusaders decided that getting to Jerusalem was too damn hard, so they just murdered a few thousand Jews in what is Western Germany today.

But that is a distinction without a difference. In fact, it is because of Muslims–who are the biggest contributor to the worldwide rise in anti-Semitism to Holocaust-eve levels–that neo-Nazis feel comfortable–far more comfortable!–manifesting their views about Jews. Until 9/11 and our resulting new tolerance for Islam, the neo-Nazi types were marginalized and howling at the wind. We know who has been targeting Jewish museums and centers affiliated with Jews in recent years. And it hasn’t been, in general, 89-year-old White guys.

but look, megan and ross explained all this just the other day.

the problem is, that anti-semitism is becoming in this country an issue upon which people have no reasonable political recourse. perfectly reasonable anti-semitic regulations have been excluded from the democratic process.

If anti-semitism were returned to the democratic process, this landscape would change dramatically. Arguments about whether and how to restrict jews — as many advanced democracies already do — would replace attempts to shoot jews at museums.

if liberals would only allow some sensible regulations, like making all jews wear yellow arm-bands, preventing them from holding public office, etc. etc., then sensible centrist americans would not be forced to shoot them.

Drudge will link, with full HTML bellznwhistles, and one of the Responsible Voices of the Major Media will use this an excuse to deplore the coarsening of public dialogue (caused entirely by the bitter insane unpatriotic “rabid lambs of the left” moonbats of course) which enables this level of hall-of-mirrors paranoia. I believe, though, that he acted on his own and that there were not any left-wing pundits in the Glen Beck or Michael Savage mold that were stoking the resentment, anger, or other emotions that impelled Ted K. to send his letter bombs. Problem with the right wing side is that they use the incendiary language and then refuse to accept any responsibility if/when people who listen to them act violently. I don’t believe Al Gore’s book uses incendiary language to describe his critics.

    With pleasure.

    From your source:

Job and Family Services Director Helen Jones-Kelley said in a letter last week that no such thing happened. She told Senate President Bill Harris, a Republican concerned about a possible breach, that she would “never authorize or turn a blind eye to accessing departmentally maintained databases for any nongovernmental purpose.”

Turns out the Obama campaign worker lied.

The investigation found Jones-Kelley had no legitimate reasons to check on Toledo-area resident Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, who was popularized as “Joe the Plumber” by Republican presidential candidate John McCain. It also confirmed she improperly used her state e-mail account to raise campaign money for President-elect Barack Obama.

Fischer, who is a minority staff member of the Foreign Relations Committee, said something as major as NATO’s role in Afghanistan would typically be held before the full Foreign Relations Committee, rather than Obama’s European subcommittee.

Utterly without documentation, but highly convenient. I suppose that’s all the abortionists have these days.

Well, asshole, if you need “documentation” of a well-known fact of life like this one (outside the right-wing nuttosphere), perhaps you should try one that somewhat fewer people are aware of.

“Swallowing a gallon of molten lead is a bad idea.”

Yeah, try that one. Just be glad I can’t get anywhere near your head with a tire-iron!

And another fine example of irony: liberals denouncing violence on the very thread where they regret their inability to immediately practice it.

Y’know, guys… much as I’m in favor of shelter adoptions and wildlife preservation, I gotta remind you: If you keep feeding the fvcking trolls, you’ll never get them out from under the porch. And unlike most small vermin, they always shit where they eat.

Actually, there was a lot more involved than that.

    Actually, no there wasn’t.

You simply refused to explain why you would force a 13 yr old to give birth against her will. Everything else was red herrings thrown in a vain attempt to obscure the fact that you believed a pregnant 13 yr old has no rights to her body and should be endangered for your own satisfaction.

statutory rape laws and opposing parental consent

Which have absolutely nothing to do with forcing a 13 yr old to give birth. She was pregnant, she choose to end it, end of story. You wanted her to be forced to risk her life and health just for your personal shits and giggles.

which made it obvious how bigoted and prejudiced the question was in the first place.

Irony never dies in BJ. We just stick a lightning rod into the corpse and VAVAVAVOOM, a troll makes it spin its grave and presto it’s alive!

Um, somewhere along the way, Godwin’s Law…broke.

Godwin’s Law took a look at the last 8 years of wingularity and said, “That’s it, I give up. From now on, I’m just a suggestion.”

I think the rising climate of hate arises from right wing desperation over Republican disintegration, the loss of white prestige and authority, and the realization that Obama is a consequential, transformative President who is going to deep-six the right for a generation or more.

If it were clear by now that Obama is a Bush-class assclown, the climate of hate would be much toned down.

I’d just like to point out that Godwin’s Law simply states that as threads get longer, the chances of a nazi comparison approaches 1. It is not a ban on nazi comparisons, like everyone seems to think it is. Talking about nazis satisfies the law.

Paul L, you have no standards to begin with.

What makes you think you could recognize one?
