… The left-leaning millennial crowd here — riding in on a fleet of electric scooters — is highly sought by candidates in the Democratic primary trying to create viral moments and seeking the sheen of authenticity.
“I am pleased to be the P.T. Barnum,” said Evan Smith, chief executive of the Texas Tribune, which was hosting most of the political events.
For the first time in this presidential campaign, most of the Democratic candidates were gathered in the same place. Over barbecue, craft beer and tacos, they took turns selling their vision for the party, and the United States.
Over the course of the weekend, many sat for an hour-long interview. Most dodged questions about whether President Trump should be impeached, said they are eager to see special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report, and heaped praise on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who sometimes seemed to overshadow them all.
Warren drew one of the largest and most enthusiastic crowds, and defended a proposal she outlined Friday to break up companies such as Google, Amazon and Facebook. (Amazon chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos also owns The Washington Post.)
“The monopolist will make fewer monopoly profits — boohoo,” she said.
She paused when asked whether Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) had tried to discourage her from running, saying, “Bernie and I had a private dinner. My view is that dinner stays private.”
She made clear that, unlike Sanders, she is not a democratic socialist.
“Bernie has to speak to what democratic socialism is,” she said. “All I can tell you is what I believe. And that is there is an enormous amount to be gained from markets. That markets create opportunities.”…
Sanders was not at SXSW — he was in Iowa, praising their caucuses.
Worth noting that not once during the hour-long interview did Warren's past claims of American Indian heritage come up. This is a look at what her campaign could look like if that particular issue fades into the background.

Phew. Took a solid hour but the big, big beef roast has all been sliced thin enough for sammiches (or whatever). Didn’t time it on purpose, but the computer monitor screen shuts off after an hour of being idle so it was at least that long.
1) Figure out where I had stored the venerable electric meat slicer.
2) As it hasn’t been used in years, give it a preliminary washing.
3) Cut roast into hunks which the machine can best accommodate
4) Slice, slice, slice. Stack, stack, stack.
5) Place neatly in storage bags, half in fridge, half in freezer. Two gallon size zip lock bags stuffed to the limit.
5) Close to 30 minutes to take the whole thing apart and give every piece, every nook and cranny, a thorough scrubbing afterwards. Had forgotten what a PITA that is.

@zhena gogolia: I’m watching Kasie DC on MSNBC for some reason (very tired and too lazy to get up and do that last chore for the day), and they played a clip of Wilmer saying that his positions have been adopted by “most Democrats”, I think is how he put it. I’m hearing a lot of this, and not just from Wilmerites. This is nonsense. Kamala Harris had to back away from her call to abolish private insurance like a hot stove, I believe Warren and Booker have both pulled back from this as well, in spite of co-sponsoring his legislation. The new Iowa poll shows 36% support for “free college”. All of which is a long-winded way of saying that AOC is in the same bubble as Wilmer, “everyone who follows me on twitter agrees with me!”

She also blamed HRC of rigging the primaries and then walked back the claim. So she says stuff and then downgrades her claim.

Trudeau promised Electoral Reform and Por-Rep.
He did nothing.
In my “region” that would have in the last Election resulted in 1 Con, 1 Dipper and 1 Lib. Instead we have 3 Cons. Por-Rep would have guarenteed at a minimum, Liberal minority governments for generations. Instead, Trudeau and the Liberals broke their election promise and kept the FPTP system, they didn’t even engage in discussions, to protect their ability to win majorities in the future. As a result, they screwed Canada for their self benifit for a Generation or more.
Instead, in my riding, one of two things will happen. Liberal votes will break for the Greens and the Con will get re-elected, or less likely, because the Dippers are imploding, Liberal votes will break for the NDP and for the first time since the 80’s we will have an NDP MP.
This is going to happen all across Canada, with the added factor of the Soveignists in Quebec. The Liberals are going to lose seats in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, the North, and the Atlantic Canada.

Very sad news. One of many losses to humanity on a plane carrying so many of the world’s best and brightest.
I’m sure Boeing’s staff lawyers and outside counsel are paying close attention. If there is so much as the merest hint of manufacturer liability, this sort of thing can attract big lawsuits and order cancellations.

I have no trouble believing the two books a week reading pace. Seriously ~ it’s quite possible, if it’s something Warren prioritizes or even just out of habit. Some people are readers and it’s how they relax and/or gather information.
I aim for 365 a year and usually manage 300 to 325. Yeah, some of those are re-reads or fairly quick reads {I can go through 3 or 4 cozy mysteries on a snowy Sunday afternoon like today…}, but at least one a week and usually a couple are fairly heavy {literally and figuratively!} books.
I come from a family of readers ~ it wasn’t unusual for my whole family to be reading in the evening, without the television on, when I was growing up. Both my parents were educated professionals; my mother was a college professor and administrator, with a more than full time job, as well as working on an additional graduate degreemost of my childhood, so she read for work and classes ~ but she also jealously guarded her personal reading time.
So, yeah, I believe Warren on the two books a week. No need to add skepticism about something that’s actually fairly reasonable to the mix.

I use to read one book a day. I was a very fast reader. Don’t do it anymore as I lost all interest. In fact I used to be not able to go to sleep unless I read for a few hours in bed. Even now when I read I sometimes have to slow myself down because I read too fast. Two books a week sounds completely doable to me.

@?BillinGlendaleCA:
It’s not even close to being the same mistake. Here, you vote in your Riding for your MP. Which ever Party get’s the most MP’s elected, gets to try to form the Government. The Leader of that Party, ( if elected in their Riding), becomes PM.
In the last election, Canadians voted for the Liberal’s Apirational Platform, and gave them a majority ( mandate) to “git er done”.
Instead, we got “same” and a Pretty Boy with a sock fetish.
So, or about a generation, Canada will alternate between a Nazi Party bare majority, and Do Nothing Liberal Minorities/bare Majorities, until either the Greens, ( not a Russian Front, Elizabeth May is rated by a huge margin the most ethical and trustworthy Politician in Canadian Politics) or the NDP, can get a Majority.
So, Canada should reach it’s 2020 Paris Climate Change targets sometime in 2070.

@Baud: I suspect Warren contracts out a lot of the drudgery that most of us end up spending hours a week on: someone else cleans her house, does her laundry, does most of her grocery shopping and all the other errands that need doing, like picking up the dry cleaning, taking the car to get its oil changed, etc.
That leaves a good amount of time to read books.
We are also assuming she is reading each book carefully. I often hop and skip through non-fiction, making note for future reference that this information is here, that information is there. I saw on Lawyers, Guns and Money recently that Eric Loomis described a similar approach to keeping up with the literature in his field.

Many books are 350 to 400 pages. So two books a week works out to 100 pages a day or so. For a decent – as opposed to very fast- reader that’s an hour and a half a day. Perhaps she doesn’t watch television or perhaps she refrains from arguing with everyone on the internet who’s wrong. She could easily find an hour and a half a day, particularly if this is an activity which she enjoys, as she seems to.

Warren is not winning people to her cause with this statement, and I find that often to be the case with her. I know a lot of you are taken with her. I’ve had the opposite problem. The more I hear her, the more off-putting I find her, and a lot of her policy proposals strike me as being bold but not fully thought out. Her wealth tax idea is problematic. I don’t know enough about technology firms to judge her proposal but even from the discussion here I could already see there were some pretty big questions about what constitutes a platform. I liked her proposal for universal childcare but that’s one of her more modest ideas.

It’s a proposal. Everybody knows that Big Tech from the Book of Faces to Amazon need to be broken up and regulated, as they are toxic to Democracy.
Once the proposal is part of the platform, and legislative policy, then the “wonks” can get to work figuring out the details.

Summer camp where I worked for many a year would hold a non-denominational equivalent of a Quaker meeting out in the forest every other week (the original owners were still in residence, the wife was a Quaker). One of the stories she’d stand up and tell every year began thusly:
It was a hot and sultry day when the stagecoach rolled into town.
“It was a hot and sultry day” became a phrase of amusement amongst the staff as much as the dark and stormy phrase night does among the literati,.
VividBlueDotty
Long-time lurker. Probably shouldn’t have chosen this topic to make a rare comment, but I’m prompted to insert some apparently little-known facts.
It takes a slightly-above-average reader about 5-6 hours to read a 300-page book. Exceptional readers probably average 4. Ten to fiteen hours a week is not going to max out the leisure time of an empty nester, even one with a demanding job. I don’t know if or how she commutes, but if she does and reads during the ride, she’s not even dipping into leisure time.
That being said, those who are saying Warren didn’t exaggerate her heritage may have missed that she put Native American as her race on a 1986 form for the State Bar of Texas. IIRC someone dug that up and that’s what started the whole issue. I trust that she did it with honest intentions but a person of her intelligence had to have known it wasn’t accurate. I don’t think it should be a significant issue, but if she wins the Democratic nomination, you can bet it won’t go away.
And THAT being said, I’m still a fan. I’m encouraged that she was warmly received at SXSW.

I am sorry that I started this stupid debate. I am sure EW can read 2 books per week or per day if she wants. I don’t doubt her intellectual capacities at all. Or the pace of her reading. When I was a teen I used to devour books. In summer vacations I would at times read a book a day. I don’t know how much I retained reading at that pace, and age. Probably not much. My friends would call me a goat who eats leaves of a book instead of leaves of a tree.
Coming back to Warren, I do think she has a tendency to humble brag. to show us how cool she is. That’s probably the origin story of the native American ancestry, Plus the whole HRC rigged the primaries statement, does not sit well with me. Speaking of substantive policies, I do like some of her regulatory ideas, but I don’t worship at her altar.
tobie
@Jay: Warren is running for President. It’s important for her to think things through. The sweeping but sloppy ideas she’s throwing out there every week remind me of the sweeping and sloppy ideas Republicans have been proposing for years. Think of Paul Ryan or Newt Gingrich. She’s adopted their strategy.
@Chris Johnson: She’s preaching to the converted and upping the ante but not winning anyone who wasn’t already on her side. I am stunned that she has decided to personalize every issue. A case in point is her statement on “monopolists” instead of “monopolies.” Why not take the time to explain the importance of antitrust laws, how they’ve been used in the past, why they are needed now, etc? That would be a way to win supporters. But she doesn’t want to build things, she wants to burn them.
ETA: It could be that she thinks she has to personalize things because people can’t understand abstraction. Better to talk monopolists than antitrust. If so, that’s pure condescension on her part. Or faux populism.
