I HAVE VERY EXCITING NEWS.
I went to water the ferns on the front porch and a momma bird flew out of one and I had not seen a bird in there all summer and I took the plant down looked and there was a nest and a baby hatchling. It is SUPER new as in no feathers so I am going to wait a week and maybe I will get some pics.
Also, I have not motivation to write about politics, but I did love Buttigieg last night pointing out something that needs to be said more often:
“It is time to stop worrying about what the Republicans will say. If we embrace a far-left agenda, they’re going to say we’re a bunch of crazy socialists. If we embrace a conservative agenda, you know what they’re going to do? They’re going to say we’re a bunch of crazy socialists,” Buttigieg said, earning applause from those in attendance.
Barack Obama, were he white, would have been a liberal Republican in many regards thirty years ago. And you saw how he was treated.
raven
right about politics?
A Ghost To Most
Fuck Republican feelings.
Be glad your birds aren’t scrub jays. They are certified assholes when raising their young.
Yarrow
I have not motivation to right about politics either. I want to left it.
satby
Buttigieg said this too, even more on point and important to hear:

Yes, I keep sharing this because I ? it so much.
raven
Not to pile on but Buttigieg wasn’t on last night.
TenguPhule
We are going to get so screwed on this deal.
guachi
You could attend an ice cream social at your local church on Sunday and be called a socialist. I think by tossing out the term “socialist” so casually Republicans will use that to try to innoculate themselves from being called racist.
satby
@raven: no, this is from an interview after the first night. Worth watching.
Edit: he’s not going to get the nomination this time, but the dude has stones.
raven
@satby: Got it, thx.

I hope to live long enough to see the true-Democrat fantasy die painfully in a fire.

I read that at that meeting about the new R fund raising consolidator, the attendees were screaming socialist at one another. It’s like calling someone a poopy head.
Also, forgive the promotion, but Amazon has the ebook of my middle grade fantasy, Finders Keepers, on sale for 99 cents for the next week. In honor of that, I’m giving away jpegs of the book’s cover art. You don’t have to buy the book. Just send me an email address and I’ll send you the flat, ie the art that wraps from front to back with no words or anything on it. [dawinsor (at) dawinsor (dot) com] It’s a nice picture to stick on a kid’s wall.

Mr Cole,
First and foremost your love dogs, cats and pets in general should be emulated by all. The period of enlightenment sadly is ending. Global warming is coming like a freight train. The denial of science is beyond my comprehension. The far left is not left, continued enlightenment through continual learning is evolution of the mind, we are no longer hunter and gatherers. We must continue to pull the other foot out of the cave. The radical left, in my opinion, is the correct path forward. I think the midterms last was won by what most would consider the far left. Thank you for this blog and all that contribute.

Red-winded blackbirds too, also.

Reposting from dead thread, My little tour of twitter and youtube seems to indicate that the Russians are directing their efforts against Harris and for Gabbard. There are a lot of tweets and comments from “black people” that are in a kind of Amos-and-Andy-in-Vladivostok patois.
In that same thread, chris shared a tweet where Gabbard is pronouncing that Mueller found that DJT did not conspire with Russia in the last election, and it’s a good thing he didn’t, because that would lead to “civil war.” She is dangerous af.
hueyplong
@Baud: Not much fun imagining what would have to transpire in order for your wish actually to come true.

I’d just rather leave fake nostalgia to the Republicans.

Congrats on the new birdies in the fern.
Just, Cole is not to mess around with them too much trying to get pix.
And while I am not a fan of Biden’s presidential campaign, I think he did say something useful to remind ourselves of from time time, which is that Trump won by a very narrow victory, and he is very beatable. Though I don’t agree with Greg Sargent that the Dems should point this out ‘constantly’ unless they follow it immediately with the statement that the stakes are so high that the Dems have to always work like they are behind, even against a beatable candidate. We need to walk a line that balances need to work very hard, but not get fearful or discouraged.
@ThePlumLineGS
” Joe Biden just pointed out that Trump won a fluke-like victory by a handful of votes in a few states, while losing the popular vote by 3 million.
Dems should point this out constantly. They should regularly talk about how deeply unpopular Trump is.”

I would listen to this radio show. But I would listen ironically, of course, same as the way I listen to NPR.
That Tulsi Gabbard tweet reminded me of Sun Myung Moon urging Unification Church members to support Richard Nixon “because he is our president.”

@TenguPhule: Not so sure, declare victory and bring em home is pretty good policy, even if trump stumbles on it because he is a coward.

Could be worse, there is a raccoon family living under my back porch this very minute.
Now then:
100% correct, they will scream socialism no matter what is proposed, so fuck them – push an agenda that benefits, you know, actual human beings. Also, too, Obama might have been considered a liberal Republican thirty years ago, except for that bit about being black. But so what? Far as I can tell, republicans these days regard anybody to the left of Winston Churchill as a liberal squish. Ronald Reagan would gotten booed off the stage at 2016 republican debates. The conservative prion disease has entered its terminal phase and is only going to get more ugly and vicious as reality, in the form of ever increasing heat, rears its appalling head.

It’s not leaving any time soon.
Last night some of our progressive betters on the debate stage thought it good strategy to make a play for the 4% of Democrats within an unfavorable view of the last Democratic POTUS.
To be fair though, I think 4% is higher than Cory Booker has been polling.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Baud: Thank you. What the fuck is the point of that?
Thirty years ago, Elizabeth Warren was a (presumably somewhat liberal) Republican.
Thirty years ago, Donald Trump was a pro-choice Democrat.
Thirty years ago, Bill Clinton was rising star in the something called the “New Democrat” movement.
Al Gore was a conservative Democrat.

@Cacti: I actually think if anyone can win advocating single payer, it’s Warren. Not a sure thing, but maybe.
It’s a gift to Martha McSally, maybe Cory Gardner, Thom Tillis and therefore Mitch McConnell. A possible life-saver tossed to Susan Collins, and an anvil thrown at Doug Jones.

I think more like 40 or 50 years ago is probably a bit more accurate.
30 years ago was 1989. I can’t think of many “liberal Republicans” from that time who were as left of center as Obama. Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority had mostly taken over the GOP by 1989.
Bill Arnold
@zhena gogolia:
Thanks for that description. Yeah. Worth some digging using twitter apis, probably.
CaseyL
So exciting to have another batch of babies on the porch!
(And a little worrying, as it’s late in the season (I think) to be starting a family. John may need to be prepared for some assistant parenting stuff: making sure Mom and Dad have a lot to eat so they can give the kids a lot to eat, and also fending off predators like crows and, um, Steve.)
I look forward to the photos!

@zhena gogolia: Well, I think the nest is under the eaves of the porch, which may help. One thing I’ve noticed is that crows don’t like to go into/under things. Possibly because they can’t make a quick flight getaway.
I noticed this back when I regularly put nuts out for squirrels and was trying to figure out how to keep the crows from getting them all. Nuts that I had tossed into underbrush, or in the space under my porch, the crows didn’t go near. I started putting all the squirrel treats in places that had one kind or another of an overhang.

BTDubs, research so far since just before the debates started show that The Russians so far have focused most of their efforts on rigging search results for Cantidates to ensure that a search on a Cantidates name, ( that they don’t like) is dominated by negative articles.

Don’t know if it has been noted yet, but Will Hurd is not going to run in 2020. That makes 5 or 6 retirees over the last couple weeks.
Elizabelle
@Barbara: I find that fascinating. Good for Hurd. He is stepping off the SS Trumptanic.
Elizabelle
@Barbara: Discussing it on the next thread. Jim, Literalist found a report that Hurd’s decision blindsided the GOP leadership.
That’s delicious, if accurate.
