The Food Here Is Terrible and the Portions Are Too Small

by John Cole|  September 17, 20099:48 am| 229 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, Clown Shoes

FacebookTweetEmail

Some days I honestly think the current Republican party is little more than a long running Second City comedy sketch:

Protesters who attended Saturday’s Tea Party rally in Washington found a new reason to be upset: Apparently they are unhappy with the level of service provided by the subway system.

Rep. Kevin Brady called for a government investigation into whether the government-run subway system adequately prepared for this weekend’s rally to protest government spending and government services.

Seriously.

The Texas Republican on Wednesday released a letter he sent to Washington’s Metro system complaining that the taxpayer-funded subway system was unable to properly transport protesters to the rally to protest government spending and expansion.

The WaPo has more:

Rep. Kevin Brady ( R ) said an 80-year-old woman and her 60-year-old daughter were forced to walk and pay for a cab because the subway system was so crowded. He said he heard many complaints from people who traveled long distances to attend the event, which served to challenge some of President Obama’s signature policies.

Oh. My. God. They had to take a cab? The horror of it all. No doubt those two kids were carrying signs that said “Keep government out of my Medicare!”

While it seems like blogging is easier with the wingnuts going so crazy, it actually is harder than you would think. What can I possibly say that would be clever or funny enough to top these stories?

*** Update ***

It gets even better:

Back in July HR3288, a Transportation and HUD appropriations bill, came up for a vote. It included $150 million for emergency maintenance funding for the DC Metro.

Brady voted against it.

The only appropriate response to people like this is open, mocking laughter.

I concur. More here.

I guess the Republicans can threaten to meddle in Washington’s affairs if they don’t comply. You know, like get involved whether gay marriage is to be allowed, or whether they can make their own gun laws.

    Oh wait, they already do.

You’re right. How do you parody something like this?

Really, it’s to the point that some clever Liberal-types could come out against (insert horrible practice here, like SF Kittens) and get the other side on record in support of it, just because they have to take the opposite position on EVERYTHING the damn LIE-berals hold.

This is just the next stage of the “2 million people on the Capital mall” bullshit. See, the fact that the metro was so crowded proves that there were that many people at the rally.

Now the wingnuttosphere can say “well if there were only 70,000 people there, why we the subways so crowded?”

Transparent bullshit to the outside world but cold, clearheaded logic inside the bubble.

    September 17, 2009 at 9:58 am

My bet: it wasn’t all that crowded. These people simply have a concept of personal space that’s basically the equivalent of “fuck off if you’re within 5 feet of me.” As a friend of mine used to say, they wear a very large sombrero. I think someone should send these folks on a trip to Shanghai (quite a good subway system by the way) or Tokyo to let them get a good look at what a crowded subway system really looks like.

Yeah I agree that this is pretty ridiculous. I live in the area and was on the Metro that day, and yes it was slow, but that’s not atypical. I think the complaints were probably centered around the fact that the lines were slow due to scheduled track maintenance that day, and how dare they schedule track maintenance on a day when eight-and-a-half million god-fearing patriots are trying to overthrow the com’nist muslin’ in the white house.

This is obviously meant to reinforce the story that there were mega-oodles of people at the rally, of course. I think some blogs have already pointed as as part of the evidence that only tens of thousands were there was that the traffic was pretty typical for a September Saturday. Thus, Operation Sardine Subway has started.

But given that there seemed to be room on some subway cars for technical thugs to stretch out and trash talk upstanding white people later on that day, we have a bit of a conflict here between at least two self-pitying means. They obviously need more central planning.

Ya see, the Super Magic Free Market was supposed to wave its little wand and make an old KFC box and a bunch of sewer rats into a coach and horses to whisk them out to their Motel 8 in Leesburg. OK, so they got a cabbie who probably yakked on his cellphone all the way while charging them an arm and a leg. But don’t worry, if there weren’t a bunch of nasty regulations the cabbie had to follow he’d have charged said wingers a lot more and the wingers would feel a lot better, I guess.

OK, the jokes just write themselves with these people, but it really takes them a couple of hours to go from rugged individulist to angry whiner at city council meetings? Really?

I think there’s a lot to this. Look at the pictures of the rallies themselves: okay, they had room to stretch out because, well, there really weren’t that many people, but they did stand a lot farther away from each other than a more usual Mall crowd would. Think about what kind of people in your experience have need a lot of personal space around them to stay calm, and there you go.

Rep. Brady is, clearly, an anti-American, closet librul.

Everyone knows that real Americans do not take public transportation, like the subway. It’s socialist.

I think it’s time to call a duck a duck, and refer to Rep. Brady as “Rep. Kevin Brady (S-Texas)”

Or, to be more precise, IslamoCommunoSocialfacist Kevin Brady.

No self respecting conservative would be caught dead on a subway. If Kevin Brady were a real American, he would have taken a 25foot Hummer stretch limo, as would the old lady and her kid (one stretch for each of them).

Only socialist/facist libruls take the subway.

Check out this rather infuriating paragraph from the new Time Magazine cover story on Glenn Beck:

    time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1924348,00.html

If you get your information from liberal sources, the crowd numbered about 70,000, many of them greedy racists. If you get your information from conservative sources, the crowd was hundreds of thousands strong, perhaps as many as a million, and the tenor was peaceful and patriotic.

Gotta love it when Time Magazine gives Glenn a hand by adding legitimacy to 12ther Teabagger Mythology! And since DC Fire/EMS is the source of the 60,000-75,000 count, I guess Fire Departments now have a liberal bias, as well.

And, even when extra trains are added, there’s still only the same amount of track, so, yes, ZOMG, things take a little longer.

[. . .] an 80-year-old woman and her 60-year-old daughter were forced</strike chose to walk and pay for a cab because the subway system was so crowded.

    Fix’d.

I took Metro from Shaw/Howard to RFK that afternoon as the Teabagging was winding down and ‘baggers were heading back whence they came (including to RFK to get back on their buses). Including my transfer at L’Enfant, it was less crowded than a typical rush hour. Seriously. Like, a LOT less crowded. Bunch of crybabies with no sense of irony, the lot of ’em.

Shit. When I’d ride the Metro home at evening rush hour the car would be so crowded that I had to rest anything I was reading on the backpack of the person in front of me. You get used to being breathed on, coughed on, accidentally hit with luggage or strollers.

All part of the ride. And lets not even talk about a sports event. I moved away from DC a few months after the inaugural. THAT was sheer madness right there.

But this seems to be a problem with baghole types. A persistent lack of self-awareness and/or identification of “the other”. It reminds me of back in 04 when the RNC was in NYC and reading on Matt Yglesias’ place about how some attendees made remarks along the lines of “don’t these New Yorkers know about 9/11!?”

    They really don’t see themselves.

This just reinforces the conclusion I’ve come to about conservatives and libertarians: they’re leeches. They think that everyone else should pay for the services that they want.

I have yet to find a single one of them who recognizes that their fanatical obsession with tax-cutting and lower taxes is why the potholes in their street aren’t being repaired or the fire station in their neighborhood is being shut down. Nope — they just always assumed that someone else was going to pay for that stuff, and now they’re indignant that no one paid up on their behalf.

Once again, Republican projection at its finest: if you don’t want to pay your share to live in a civil society, repeatedly accuse your opponents of not paying their share.

    Brady voted against it.

The only appropriate response to people like this is open, mocking laughter.

This doesn’t cause cognitive dissonance in conservatives because one of their central tenets has always been that government should be able to everything it currently does 100% better with 50% less funding.

See, all we need to do is cut out all the “bureaucracy” and “wasteful spending” and then we can expand services while also cutting taxes, no problem.

If that doesn’t work then simply “privatize” (ie, subsidize private companies to run) the service, because the free market can do everything inherently more efficiently than government.

Arriving from MARC Train, Union Station, around 8:00 am

Another Union Station photo, around 8:00 am

This one isn’t transit-related, but just to give you an idea of the crowd crush on the streets that day…. waiting on C Street to get into the Blue ticketed area

And finally, the crowd outside Union Station, around 4:30 pm, trying to get into the terminal to catch their trains home.

So color me a little skeptical that the ‘baggers (especially the ones that believe 1.5-2 million attended on 9/12) experienced anything close to what Inaugural-goers did.

Agreed. But the reason wingers have this ridiculous attitude is that they don’t actually value public services. Until they do. And that alone explains why they don’t have a problem with defense spending. Because they value it.

Liberals, on the other hand, tend to value both public services and defense but think defense spending is far out of proportion to what it needs to be (given its comparability with other countries). And our attitude compels wingers to believe we don’t value defense at all. Because that’s how they think. Rarely do you see liberals running around saying, “Get the GUVERMENT out of my MILITARY!”. think the complaints were probably centered around the fact that the lines were slow due to scheduled track maintenance that day, and how dare they schedule track maintenance on a day when eight-and-a-half million god-fearing patriots are trying to overthrow the com’nist muslin’ in the white house.

I do think it is kind of dumb to schedule track maintenance on a day you’re getting 60K people (or whatever the real number was) you could probably have found a better time. On the other hand, if this was revenge… then I approve. :-)

The thing worth noting is if Brady has complaints, he should turn to the organizers. It’s the organizers who are supposed to communicate with Metro and if they believe their crowds will clog Metro, well, they’re supposed to shell out the extra $$ to make it worth Metro’s while to add trains and cars.

Thus, libertarian anti-government types are obviously incompetent. But after 8 years of Bush, that’s no surprise.

Since she is black, and we live in the south, she thought that rather than subtle racism that you might see down here, it would become overt. I pointed out that the Cracker Barrel incident was pretty overt and that happened before the news media started reporting on it. I also thought that Beck and Limbaugh should be called on their racist comments by the MSM. I’m not black so I can’t really judge what she is thinking but I thought that I would ask you.

Oh, man, that is the saddest, funniest thing I have ever heard since the This American Life episode about the phone company.

My most recent experience with them involved being on hold and transferred around for over two hours when the internet (but not cable) went out. No one could figure out the problem and then, finally, it was determined that my internet was cut because in typing in my account number for payment, evidently I got a number wrong and the payment was rejected. So apparently the M.O. for such a thing is not to notify the customer that there’s a payment problem, but rather to cut off half of the services the customer is paying for, leave the other half alone to encourage the thought that it must be a technical problem, and notify no one in any U.S. or India-based office that there was a billing problem. For added fun, charge a returned check fee.

None of those questions mean anything in the corporate-controlled entertainment Matrix that dominate millions of households, not just the ones in Oklahoma. Here’s all they need to know to be a citizen in that world:

    1) Who is Nick Cannon married to?

    2) Who sings “I Kissed a Girl”?

    3) Name two judges on American Idol.

    4) What does LOL stand for?

    5) What school does Harry Potter attend?

And try taking the tube at London’s Victoria Station during the morning rush.

Been there, done that. I lived in London for some years and if you can squeeze yourself into the next train/tube that comes along the platform, it’s not considered busy.

Most weekday mornings are busy, and crucial lines are running trains every 3-5 minutes.

Also, days when no stations were closed temporarily due a bomb alert were good days.

One Million Strong Against Our SOCI ALIST Fire Departments

A friend of mine on Facebook was listed as a member of this. I had a brief moment where I thought it might be for real, but she couldn’t be a wingnut. It’s one of the better spoof sites I’ve seen in a while:

“What are the Government redtrucks really spraying on our elderly citizen’s home?”

“What happens to babies left at fire departments? Raised to be ACORN prostitutes! (Confirmed)”

I guess Fire Departments now have a liberal bias, as well.

According to the GOP, the proper usage of fire departments is presented in the novel (and film) “Fahrenheit 451”. Pity those poor old white women having to ride in a DC cab, probably driven by some dusky Third World heathen wearing a turban. They might have picked up some exotic disease.

Well, FB polls are almost uniformly idiotic and are never funny like they should be. I’ve tried to write some things but they don’t seem to go viral.
At least the constitutionality of “under God” is debatable. You could not, if you tried, invent a hypothetical that would be more clearly in violation of the constitution than establishing an official religion, which these morans would (maybe) know if they had ever read the words “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…”

Your comment about the DC Metro ridership being up by 140,000 doesn’t pass muster if you want us to assume that’s all due to the Teabaggers.

How many other public events were going on that day?

Well, there was the Black Family Reunion. And people coming to town for the Nation’s Triathlon on Sunday…

How many other public events were going on that day?

There was the National Council of Negro Women’s 24th Annual Black Family Reunion Celebration on the west end of the Mall. Ran Saturday and Sunday, and usually pulls in 1/2 a million over the two days.

@JK: Oh, I’ve been here all week–just during the day. I’ve been dedicating myself to being off the grid at night for the last few days. I will do the same tonight and maybe tomorrow. In addition to recharging my batteries, it seems that my nightly absence spurs Cole into posting more animal pics, the bastard.

Wide stance? Why, yes I do, thank you very much!

So the people rallying agains government spending really wanted MORE government spending…as long as the money was spent on them.

It is scary that they don’t see their own contradictory behavior.

I read a quote yesterday of one wingnut again putting forward the fear that ‘Obama wants to take away our guns.’ Of course, he is one of the crowd that has brought its guns to Obama rallies and townhalls, without the slightest reproach from the Secret Service.

Soon they will all be buried under a pile of straw men.

You see, that’s where BOB goes wrong. Whoever it is I’m looking at you DougJ) writing his spoof comes up with some absolute crackers, but it’s impossible to suspend that disbelief when he gets lazy.

Makewi, now there’s a troll who really does understand the art of being offensive. It’s 100%-pure slimy-assed, ‘I’m so very right that I don’t even need to address a single thing you say to feel this superior’ wingnutism cracked out of a sealed glass labelled 2002 every time he spews. That’s why he gets so many responses, his shtick picks at a scab that’s still raw.

But Bender, he gets the whole ‘I’m gonna sit here and wait until they’ve all gone, then I’m gonna show ’em who knows what’s what’ chickenhawk thing down perfectly. It’s like someone lived in Dan Rhiel’s closet for a year just to perfect a mannerism.

@Cyrus: there are some clever things you can do for rewards that still stay within HSR. For example if they “pass” you give them a choice of candy bars; if they fail, they have to take the candy bar offered. People will do some heavily lifting just for choice (everyone has to get a reward, finish or not). But, yes, without reading a methods section motivation is a huge unknown.
