Today we continue with some fantastic submissions from HinTN that I’d lost but have been re-sent. We’ll continue Monday, and that may be it until the new site. I very much wanted to run these as the last ones before my hiatus so I’m so glad HinTN reached out and re-sent them to me – I felt horrible being unable to retrieve them, and am thankful for gracious people.

These are from Canyonlands NP.
Canyonlands – Green River Overlook
Canyonlands NP and Dead Horse Point SP share the same space near Moab, UT Dead Horse Point is tiny; Canyonlands NP is huge. It has three contiguous but very distinct areas, all of which overlook from various elevations the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers. We only got to visit Island in the Sky, which shares space with Dead Horse Point State Park. The view south over the Green River is amazing because the drop from the overlook to that tableland is about 1,000 feet. Then wherever the water ran the land is just carved away into the drainage for the Green River.
Canyonlands – View through Mesa Arch
This photo looks east through the Mesa Arch, over the Colorado River to the Lasale Mountains.
Canyonlands – Jeep Trip Hammer Formation
We took a jeep trip at Canyonlands, too, and along the way we saw more of Thor’s Hammers.

Great photos. I am not sure which one of those parks we were in when I saw people jumping off and gliding off a high point. They had to know they were going to get the right winds at that particular place.

You make me home sick. I grew up among the 5 national parks in Utah closest to Capital Reef, but spent my childhood venturing through all 5 plus the numerous national monuments, state parks, and recreation areas.

I’m so grateful to BJ and contributors for this continuing feature, and especially to Alain for managing it (sorry but I can’t recall if it was your idea in the first place). These photos are beautiful. What a magnificent place! Thank you for sharing HinTN, and thanks to Alain for posting. On the Road always makes my day. I love to share where I’ve been (I’ll have pictures from Newfoundland when OTR is back) and I especially love seeing everyone else’s pictures and stories.

I had an opportunity to get to Canyonlands some years back, and it really is spectacular, and a lot (a *lot*) less crowded than some of the bigger names. Pretty out of the way, though. I recall heading back, and the entrance ramp to I-70 in Green River had a sign saying something like “Next Services 140 Miles.”

Canyonlands is wonderful. I have a friend with a 70’s Toyota Land Cruiser that has taken me camping on the Elephant Hill trail in the Needles district. It’s a wonderful place to tour, in someone else’s truck ;-).

To Alain: nice shots, I can see why folks get up at dark o’clock to shoot the sunrise there. (Frame 1 horizon is sliding off to the right, an easy correction on the PC when you’re back on one.)

The Green River overlook at the Islands in the Sky section of Canyonlands should be at the top of anyone’s list of all-time great panoramic vistas – you can see all the way down to the remote “Maze” section of Canyonlands downriver. BTW: the mountains in the distance in the photo are the “La Sal” mountains, not the “lassie” mountains. Because the La Sals are relatively isolated from other ranges, they can be seen from a great distance from higher points in all directions – you can see them from the other side all the way over in Telluride, Colorado, as well as from some points along the Grand Mesa near Grand Junction, Co, and then from the other side, from higher points in Canyonlands around Moab.

Wow, gorgeous, and a wonderful flashback for me – when I was about 16, my Explorer post* went on a week-long rafting trip down the Green River and camped throughout that area. The scenery was amazing. I’ve never forgotten it.
*commie liberals blithely ignored the Boy Scout rule that only boys could join; we were coed for years until they caught up with us.

You trigger a somewhat interesting memory:
In August 2000, visiting Tromsø, Norway above the Arctic Circle, I crossed the strait to the Norwegian mainland at about 10 PM & went up the Fjellheisen funicular to about 1400 ft. on a west-facing cliff.
Two young guys exited the cable car carrying what looked like a black duffel bag on steroids & proceeded to extract from it a parasail – which they hefted on their shoulders & after a short run downhill took off into a western sky gold and charcoal with the Arctic sun behind clouds. We watched them glide for ~10 minutes to alight in a parking lot just short of the narrow strait that separates the main part of the town on Tromsøya island from the mainland. Neat!
