Why CDC guidance won’t be released:
1. Guidelines say states should not reopen while their Covid cases are increasing.
2. Trump admin wants states to reopen regardless.
3. White House does not want to be accountable, and guidelines would make them so. https://t.co/SIW92i6Huu— David Leavitt (@David_Leavitt) May 7, 2020

Not sure even the ‘low info, independent’ swing voters are gonna believe the One Bad Apple theory here… especially since Trump’s minions can’t push it too hard, because The Base approves of Trump’s virulent racism.
This saddens me. ALL of the news media should be non-stop highlighting how so many other countries have crushed COVID. And how everyone is doing way better than us. https://t.co/o9slxKnTML pic.twitter.com/CpLGAaltAR

From the Australian Dept of Health:
‘As at 3:00pm on 8 May 2020, a total of 6,914 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 97 deaths and 6,079 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19.
Over the past week, there has been an average of 18 new cases reported each day. Of the newly reported cases, the majority have been from Victoria.
Of cases with a reported place of acquisition, 63% have recent international travel history, including over 1,200 cases associated with cruise ships.
To date, over 757,000 tests have been conducted nationally. Of those tests conducted 0.9% have been positive.’
No deaths recorded today and 17 new cases, mostly in Victoria.
In positive news today, the National Cabinet has released a plan to ease restrictions that have been in place for some time. From next week, cafes and restaurants can switch from takeaway only to outdoor dining. Groups (up to 10 people) can gather for weddings and funerals, libraries will reopen as well as swimming pools. Sports training for non contact sports can resume as long as the numbers are no more than 10.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam will give his briefing and press conference today, and will explain “Phase 1” of life Virginia’s Covid-19 restrictions, to start next Friday (“if data and science support it”) As he noted last Friday, our shut down has been somewhat less restrictive with regard to allowable work and retail -garden centers, etc. still open. He has also said that local authorities will still be allowed a stricter regime. Northam gives a good briefing; it will be carried live at 2pm on WINA 1070AM out of Charlottesville and WRVA 1140AM out of Richmond.

All the drugs the Nat Geo article talks about are used for RA, but fortunately none of mine are in there. So far. I still can’t get any hydroxycloroquine even though its use for COVID19 appears to be a failure.
Geminid
@Geminid: I should have said Northam and his team give a good briefing. Cabinet members appear with him and take questions regarding particular medical issues and unemployment benefits, prisons, etc.
JeanneT
@OzarkHillbilly: Hopefully there will be some you tolerate – they’re not talking about NSAIDs. Here’s the list of drugs the article highlighted: interleukin-6, tocilizumab, corticosteroids, baricitinib.
Sounds like even once the best fit anti-inflammatories are identified, figuring out when to use them is tricky. Too early, and they stop the immune system from functioning well enough to keep out other infections.
satby
@JeanneT: I have steroids (advair) prescribed for my asthma and I stopped taking them in case I ended up with an infection that is worsened by a depressed immune response. It’s been ok, but I have to be aware of any slight breathing issue and determine if it’s just my normal asthma or the start of symptoms of covid-19. By nature I’m not inclined to be paranoid about my health at all, so I hate this.
Victor Matheson
Yeah, but it’s the Friday that the job report is going to be released and it’s not going to be pretty.
Victor Matheson
And there it is. Worst single jobs report in the history of economic data in the country. 14.7% Highest unemployment rate since the Depression. And that doesn’t even fully cover it.
Geminid
@Victor Matheson: An industrial purchasing managers index was negative most of last year, and the industrial recession it indicated was already resulting in layoffs at several heavy truck plants in December. Now the industrial recession is deep and worldwide, and will take many months if not years to recover. Judicious fiscal stimulus from the federal government can help; in the short term that’s something Pelosi, Schumer et al are working on. In the medium term we vote in November and that can set the stage for a new President and and Congress this January. Investment in clean energy, energy conservation, and a smart grid would be one good way to help bring the country out of recession.

Thanks very much, as always, for these updates, AL.
Re Schooley’s tweet – he can’t be that dumb. Donnie never wanted to be president – he wanted to be seen as BMOC by his rich and powerful “peers”. He was (supposedly) planning to start a cable TV network once he lost to Hillary. He tried to get Kasich to be his VP to actually run the government while he played God-Emperor.
He’s never been interested actually doing the work. He just wants to BS everyone into giving him the adulation that his tiny, fragile, ego demands. He is never going to actually do anything productive.
Surely Schooley knows this.
Twitter is horrible and it dumbs-down smart people.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Scott.

From what i have read from Russian friends, there are pockets in the rest of the country that are worse than Moscow. The virus isn’t like the spokes of a wheel spreading out from Moscow. Moscow and many other cities had infected individuals fly into the country at roughly the same time but Moscow is getting most of the government’s attention and other areas aren’t.
