If you are in Harris county, Texas (most of Houston), there are four sites that will be open for 24 hours straight. See Https://www.harrisvotes.com for details.

Edit to correct. Right sites. They’ve increased since last I checked.

So much this.  I hate the people who talk as if poor Democratic turnout is a sign of apathy.  Sometimes- like relatively poor turnout in midterms- it is, but very often it’s because Republicans have deliberately made it hard to vote.  If we want to win consistently, we do need to fight apathy, but it’s far more important to make it easier to vote.

Speaking of making voting more difficult:

“A new challenge to Harris County’s drive-thru voting sites, filed by two GOP candidates and a Republican member of the Texas House, asks the state Supreme Court to void ballots “illegally” cast by voters in cars.

That could put more than 100,000 ballots at risk, drawing sharp criticism from Democrats and raising fears among voters, including those with disabilities and others who were directed into drive-thru lanes as a faster method of voting.”

    These assholes just never stop.

@Baud:  Yep. Me too. I am already getting people thinking about voting in midterms. While Trump is in office and people are tuned in to the election, it’s a good time to remind or let people know (if they’re not experienced voters they may not understand) that for things to get done it matters who’s in Congress. And to get rid of the Republicans who enabled Trump we have to show up again in 2022. Even if Trump is gone (fingers crossed, please, please, please) many of them will still be there. Plant that idea in their heads now and keep talking about it for the next two years.

Took me three hours to vote early in NYC on Saturday. Apparently it’s not just first-day enthusiasm, and lines continue to be long. The city only has like eighty polling places for early voting, which is ludicrous.

I had two mail-in ballots not count in California (signature mismatch & no postmark) so I’m reluctant to vote that way again, tbh.

I would have to agree with Baud.  The primary factor for increased turnout in Harris County is voter interest, mainly on the Democratic side.  In a non-Covid year, I don’t think that all of the things that Harris County is doing would lead to the numbers we are seeing this year.  However, I would be happy doing drive-in voting from here on out.  I am also really curious to see how the overnight voting goes tonight.

@Squid696:  There’s always an increase in voting in a presidential year, so that’s part of increased turnout this time. But long lines in 2018 did mean some people didn’t vote. Easier access to voting helps because people don’t have to wait for hours. Plus, this time polls are open more hours and the 24 hour day will allow anyone who has trouble getting to the polls at regular hours.

@PsiFighter37: I voted absentee and I really want to know why more people in the city didn’t. I mean, I requested the ballot months ago and its not like there is much going on. Like if you’re connected to the Internet, why didn’t you vote absentee and free up a space in line for people without home access? Not calling you out in particular. Up here in Rockland I actually had to print out a form to request the ballot and I know that there’s lots of people who don’t have printers. In the city, the ballot could be requested completely online. We’ve been basically stuck inside for months without much to do and the 20 minutes spent requesting the ballot vs. 3+ hours spent standing in line seems crazy to me.

There’s nothing like winning a tough race to convince people their votes do matter.  But I think it’s not necessarily an either/or; it’s a sliding scale.  People who think their votes don’t matter might still vote as a way of expressing a protest if it were easy enough; people who think their votes do matter might still not vote if it were made difficult enough.  We need to work on both sides of the equation.

The list of locations is here.

NOTE: The “approved last-minute drop-off location” for Shelby County (Memphis, the largest and most Democratic city in the state) is outside the Memphis city limits, an hour and a half away by transit. It’s technically close to the geographic center of the county, but nowhere near most of the population.

Re: the Transition – TheAtlantic via GovExec:

For much of American history, presidential transitions were casual affairs, typified by a long post-campaign vacation for the winning candidate and little organized communication or cooperation between incoming and outgoing administrations. That shifted during the first half of the 20th century, but no law of presidential transitions existed until 1964. That year, Congress passed the Presidential Transition Act (PTA), which is central to how modern transitions are run. This law—and its many amendments, the most recent of which was enacted just this year—provides millions of dollars in funding for transition operations and requires the government to support potential incoming administrations with information, expertise, and direct assistance.

Strikingly, Congress placed almost all the responsibility for managing the transition in the hands of career employees. This means that when it comes to matters of transition, the president and those immediately surrounding him are less important than they seem: The real action lies with career staff in the agencies.

A good read, especially for those of us worried about worst cases.

@Peale: Simple: NYS massively fucked up the primary when it came to mail balloting. I got mine just 3 days before the election, and right before I was about to leave town for a week. I have no idea if I signed everywhere I needed to, because there were no instructions. Now read about how many tens of thousands of ballots were misprinted. I hate standing in line, but I would rather know that my vote counts than trust USPS or the BOE (which is filled with nepotism hires) to get mail balloting done right.

@Ramalama: Did you know that if you vote from abroad absentee using a local US address your vote helps elect electors from that state. Also too you get to vote on local issues and candidates. But if you vote just as an unattached ex-pat, all those unattached expats are just voting for the one same group of electors. So they only get one elector, while the others are voting for three?

@Peale: When Trump and DeJoy telegraphed that they were going to mess with the Postal Service to impede mail votes, it convinced a lot of people who were planning to vote by mail that they had better vote in person instead.

Massachusetts sent an application for a mail ballot to everyone in the state before the state primary, and it was possible at that point to request them for both the primary and the general election. I voted by mail entirely for the primary; for the general election, I used a drive-up dropbox for my mail ballot. But my wife decided to do in-person early voting for the general election instead.

@Yarrow: FWIW every polling location in WI has to have “curbside” voting available for people who have a disability that would prevent them from being able to enter the polling place to cast a ballot. There is a specific, formal procedure that must be followed to ensure both security and privacy.   A ballot cast that way would appear no different any other ballot.  The ballot book would not that Joe Schmoe voted curbside but that would be it.

@Kirk Spencer:  If you go to Harrisvotes and look at the early voting locations, you can see that even if a site hosts both drive through and walk-in voting they are listed as separate sites. That’s why I think they could just invalidate the entire “site” because it’s listed separately. Of course that shouldn’t be allowed to happen at all but I think that’s how they could do it.

@Omnes Omnibus:  Texas also has curbside voting for people with disabilities (or other reason they can’t go in). The Republican lawsuit against drive-through voting claimed drive-through was an illegal expansion of curbside. Link.

In its petition to the state Supreme Court, the state GOP argued that drive-thru voting booths violated the state law that strictly limits curbside voting to those who have submitted sworn applications verifying that they are sick, disabled or in danger of harm if required to vote inside a polling location.

The Republican Party accused Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins of using the pandemic as a pretext to illegally offer curbside voting to every voter in the state’s most populous county.

There are lots of American citizens living abroad who as citizens are entitled to vote but don’t have an attachment to a home community in the US. I am guessing a lot of multi-generational military families fit that description. Also diplomatic families. Also people who went back to the old country but kept their American citizenship.
