Sometimes- like relatively poor turnout in midterms- it is, but very often it’s because Republicans have deliberately made it hard to vote. While Trump is in office and people are tuned in to the election, it’s a good time to remind or let people know (if they’re not experienced voters they may not understand) that for things to get done it matters who’s in Congress. And to get rid of the Republicans who enabled Trump we have to show up again in 2022. Even if Trump is gone (fingers crossed, please, please, please) many of them will still be there. Plant that idea in their heads now and keep talking about it for the next two years.

Took me three hours to vote early in NYC on Saturday. Apparently it’s not just first-day enthusiasm, and lines continue to be long. The city only has like eighty polling places for early voting, which is ludicrous.
I had two mail-in ballots not count in California (signature mismatch & no postmark) so I’m reluctant to vote that way again, tbh.

I would have to agree with Baud. The primary factor for increased turnout in Harris County is voter interest, mainly on the Democratic side. In a non-Covid year, I don’t think that all of the things that Harris County is doing would lead to the numbers we are seeing this year. However, I would be happy doing drive-in voting from here on out. I am also really curious to see how the overnight voting goes tonight.

They should be given credit too. They are really great. They have picked very local issues and gotten people in those communities involved around the issues and managed to get results. That makes people feel their vote and voice counts.

White surburban early voting locale in our local library last Saturday – 3.5 hour line to vote. Everyone in masks and NOBODY left the line. Not one. And I’ll wager very few of them were there to vote for Trump – most of his support in this state comes from the rurals (of course).

@Squid696: There’s always an increase in voting in a presidential year, so that’s part of increased turnout this time. But long lines in 2018 did mean some people didn’t vote. Easier access to voting helps because people don’t have to wait for hours. Plus, this time polls are open more hours and the 24 hour day will allow anyone who has trouble getting to the polls at regular hours.

@PsiFighter37: I voted absentee and I really want to know why more people in the city didn’t. I mean, I requested the ballot months ago and its not like there is much going on. Like if you’re connected to the Internet, why didn’t you vote absentee and free up a space in line for people without home access? Not calling you out in particular. Up here in Rockland I actually had to print out a form to request the ballot and I know that there’s lots of people who don’t have printers. In the city, the ballot could be requested completely online. We’ve been basically stuck inside for months without much to do and the 20 minutes spent requesting the ballot vs. 3+ hours spent standing in line seems crazy to me.

@WaterGirl: Yeah, one of the issues is that here in WI, you have to have a little time to make sure that the ballots get sent to the polling places so that they can be counted. You need to set up all the actual polling places. And the poll workers who have been working the early locations need to be able to get a few hours of sleep before the onslaught on Tuesday.

About to start my first of two days as an election monitor in Nevada. Tomorrow is a holiday in the state (“Nevada Day” – the anniversary of admission) and most public employers are closed. Therefore, turnout is expected to be heavy here tomorrow. I’m going back home to LA on Saturday instead of sticking around for election day. It looks like the proportion on Nevada’s voters casting early ballots is huge, and the turnout on November 3rd is likely to be heavily Republican. And I don’t really care if they’re intimidated at the polls (yeah, I’m not a good person).

I have no idea if I signed everywhere I needed to, because there were no instructions. Now read about how many tens of thousands of ballots were misprinted. I hate standing in line, but I would rather know that my vote counts than trust USPS or the BOE (which is filled with nepotism hires) to get mail balloting done right.

@Peale: When Trump and DeJoy telegraphed that they were going to mess with the Postal Service to impede mail votes, it convinced a lot of people who were planning to vote by mail that they had better vote in person instead.
Massachusetts sent an application for a mail ballot to everyone in the state before the state primary, and it was possible at that point to request them for both the primary and the general election. I voted by mail entirely for the primary; for the general election, I used a drive-up dropbox for my mail ballot. But my wife decided to do in-person early voting for the general election instead.

@Yarrow: FWIW every polling location in WI has to have “curbside” voting available for people who have a disability that would prevent them from being able to enter the polling place to cast a ballot. There is a specific, formal procedure that must be followed to ensure both security and privacy. A ballot cast that way would appear no different any other ballot. The ballot book would not that Joe Schmoe voted curbside but that would be it.

That’s why I think they could just invalidate the entire “site” because it’s listed separately. Of course that shouldn’t be allowed to happen at all but I think that’s how they could do it.

There are lots of American citizens living abroad who as citizens are entitled to vote but don’t have an attachment to a home community in the US. I am guessing a lot of multi-generational military families fit that description. Also diplomatic families. Also people who went back to the old country but kept their American citizenship.
ETA I think all the possessions and territories and DC also vote from that same elector slate. Residents of states vote for three electors. Everybody else just gets one and it’s the same one.

I have lost my mind.
I bought two of my granddaughters ‘four unicorns of the acopolypse’ t-shirts. Totally inappropriate for kids, but my oldest granddaughter loves unicorns and we all are very angry.
They look like extremely angry ‘my little pony’ unicorns. The white one has a skull head.
And both girls just sent me a smiling picture wearing them.

@Major Major Major Major: A guy I know in New York argues that, historically, NYS voting regulations seem to be organized for the benefit of “power users”–people who have somewhat tacit knowledge of a welter of weird wrinkles and tricks. It’s a form of vote suppression, not so much partisan as incumbent-protecting and discouraging outsider movements.

@Sab: I love people who raise fierce fiesty daughters (or granddaughters). I hope I did my part with my own two daughters, now grown.
I used to read a blog called “Bitch, Ph.D”. I loved the banner up top. The blog is no more, but the banner is preserved in this post from somebody else’s blog.
Edit: We have two grandkids now and it sounds like our granddaughter is being brought up very nicely thank you. She gave us quite a speech on the evils of Columbus a couple of weeks ago. The grandson is too young to be very radical yet.

The Pod Save America guys said again last night that we have to remember that we have agency, and that Trump can only steal this if we let him get away with it.
And all the stories about how they could do this thing to steal it or that thing to steal it only helps to set the narrative that it IS possible for him to steal it, and that we are helpless to stop it.
We just have to keep doing everything we can. They said if everybody takes a shift of 100 calls, if you even get 2 or 3 people to vote that wouldn’t otherwise have voted, if you multiply that by a thousand people that’s enough to swing the vote in the other direction in some precincts.
We have to keep plodding along, working our asses off, to make it as overwhelming a victory as possible for our side.
We have to fight.

I haven’t been allowed to visit my 96 year old dad since March. I wear a mask and gloves to the grocery.
Dad’s nurse’s aide has had two close relatives die and one of them was a 27 year old father of two preschool kids.
Five funerals I haven’t gone to this year, and my step-sons are still waiting for it to be safe to get married in front of family.
Just the two of us for Thanksgiving this year when usually we have 25+
ETA: That young man needs some experience with signing up for umemployment during a pandemic.

But Stacey Abrams has unfinished business, and I believe that not long after the Georgia Senate runoff in January, she will begin her campaign to run cheatn’ Brian Kemp’s sorry ass out of the Georgia Governor’s mansion. Georgians really need a good Governor, and Abrams could be a great one.

@WaterGirl: Someone in a thread below said that we were lucky that Biden got the nomination. I pushed back, saying that we chose Biden. We have agency and we did a good job in the primary.

@Major Major Major Major: I don’t know if it was the neighborhood, or the lousy-ish weather, but yesterday evening when I voted at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Sunset Park, there was barely a line and I got in and out very quickly. They definitely had the capacity for and were expecting more. This does seem to be an anomaly.

Just got back from voting! No line at all but I’m in a very rich and very red county in FL, so I’m sure they get all the funds and equipment they need. Poll workers inside had masks on but the guy at the door did not. There is no mask requirement here.
It’s mostly Trumpies here but I have seen some Biden/Harris signs and more signs for down-ticket Democratic candidates than usual. So I’m mildly hopeful! I’m trying not to get tooooo hopeful; 2016 was soul-crushing. But I’m hopeful!
Dang Republican Sheriff was running unopposed but rather than write in Chuck E. Cheese, I just left that one blank. Not giving them any reason-no matter how far-fetched- to toss my ballot.
Come on, Florida Democrats! We can do this! (I hope)
