Respite Thread: Ducklings Update 1

As promised, a duckling update. They are growing like weeds, eating bowls of food. I finally had to change out their small bowl to a larger bowl and I’m still filling it three times a day or more.

They spend most of their time eating, swimming in their water bowl  – I’ll probably try bathtub time later this week – and sleeping on their heat pad. They spend a few minutes several times a day on their blanket (okay, Scout’s blanket, but she doesn’t seem to mind) building up their leg strength.

They seem healthy and happy, so I’m seriously thinking of names. They are still just “the girls” for now (even though sex is undetermined yet).

Today they surprised me. I put them on their blanket, then went into the kitchen to get my camera. And. They. Followed. Me. Quacking all the way. Of course, I got them to repeat it so I could get it on video. I guess they’ve imprinted on me. ❤

    @Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):  I never thought I would hear a better Scrooge than Alan Young. Then David Tennant entered the chat. You can tell he not only enjoys the character, he just loves getting to tear into dialogue in his native Scottish brogue. He’s brilliant.

    Adorable update!  Do they settle down to sleep at night, or are you periodically awakened by baby quackings?

    @Joy in FL:  I think TaMara’s cats and dogs are indeed accustomed to seeing odd creatures inhabiting their territory.  There have been quite a few!

    @TaMara (HFG): Those ducklings are adorable! Thanks for brightening my morning. And I am impressed that your cat ignored them. Mine, in his youth, would have chased them around the house or played duck hockey.

    Oh, be careful. One of the most traumatic experiences of my young life (I was 5 at the time) was when my beloved grandfather gave me my own duckling. She (it?) imprinted on me, and I spent hours running around the furnace in our basement with her (it?) following, until one day I mis-stepped and crushed the poor little thing’s head under my heel. I can still, to this day, 60 years later, see that sad little image when I close my eyes and think about it.

    Oh, and there were two ducklings total. The other one, my grandfather re-assumed responsibility for. We had roast duck for Easter dinner that year. Also massively traumatizing.

    I am totally experiencing PTSD from these duckling posts.
