As I mentioned last week, Watergirl and I are going to be talking to the devs about fixing some issues. So this is the thread for technical issues or things that are broken.
NOT, AS MANY OF YOU ARE PRONE TO DO, A PLACE TO DISCUSS THINGS YOU DO NOT LIKE. That is every OTHER thread on this here blog.
So things that are broken or do not work. Like “the back button does not work.” Or “the comment function is sometimes wonky.” Not, “I don’t like X and I am a crusty old fart and it puts me in a bad mood first thing in the morning and then I forget about it when I have a solid bowel movement.”
Please also list what device you are using- iphone, that other type of phone the name of which escapes me at the moment, pc, laptop, mac, tablet (and type of tablet), WOPR, whatever. Be as specific as possible about the issue and your device.
Thank you. Jerks.
H.E.Wolf
I appreciate all the behind-the-scenes work that you and WaterGirl do to keep the blog functioning. Thank you!
I read the blog using Firefox version 88.0.1, on a desktop computer running MacOS Sierra version 10.12.6, and on occasion the “Visual” option for comments doesn’t work (just the Text option). Other times it’s fine. Could be the sunspot cycle. :)

Well ok since you ask, i have an old iPhone 6, which runs iOS 12.5 And That’s It So Fk Yall YW Signed Apple, and I basically don’t really try to look at the site on there, cuz I see about the first item or two, without any pix or embeds or anything, and then an infinite blank screen with a “REFRESH” button at the top, and that’s pretty much it for an indefinite period. Not that big a deal, just load time, not particularly a problem on an iPad running iOS 14.something, and no issue at all on Mac Pro and fkin better not be because Jeezus Apple. Anyway FYI.

Font kerning is awful.
Kidding. Have seen no issues lately in Chrome / Mac OS.

The one thing that keeps happening (like just now when I went to the comment box) is that the comment box shows just a ‘Text’ tab and no ‘Visual’ tab. I know it gets ‘fixed’ with a refresh, but it’s a persistent issue. This is on my iMac, with Safari– but it happens on my other various iDevices.

There go two miscreants
Using Win10, Firefox 88.0.1 64bit, over Verizon Fios.
The site loads adequately fast except when there are lots of twitter embeds. I have no complaints in that area.
Most of the time, the Visual tab does not respond, even after a refresh. (Also, refreshing loses the source comment if I am replying to someone, but that may be expected behavior.)
The Text tab always works, but when replying to another comment the data-mce-fragment=”1″ nonsense is always included and must be deleted.
Other than that I have not had any problems.

Hey there are two messages in spam for Cheryl’s “weapon” post – that I think should be released, but I wasn’t sure, so I didn’t – but if someone who maybe runs the blog checked on them…

The ‘show on front page’ extender, at least on the mobile site, does not set a ‘location’ for back buttons. This means that if I click the expand button, and then click a link to (say) twitter, and then click the back button, I will be at a totally different place on the BJ page than I was when I left, because the things I expanded closed up again.
This should be fixable via: https://flylib.com/books/en/4.254.1.99/1/

I read this using Firefox (currently 78.10) on CentOS 7.7 (which is why Firefox is so far behind).I also have instances where the Visual option doesn’t work – this tends to be when responding to another comment, as opposed to this case, where I am creating one from scratch, so to speak.
Also, and this has improved over the past month or so, sometimes when I open this blog’s page, a ton of new code and ads seems to load all at once, and performance of anything else I might be doing goes to hell.None of my bowel movements have any effect on any of this, FYI.
EDIT: I also have Duck Duck Go Privacy Essentials installed. Also too, when I went to edit this, Visual didn’t work and I had to edit it in Text mode.

@H.E.Wolf: I almost ALWAYS get the text instead of visual and have to “click here to refresh” to get the visual tab back. It is most annoying when a thread first loads and I have a killer reply to a comment, like it did when I first tried to reply to your comment. Windows 10, Edge(Chromium).
ETA: I’m sure others will mention it, the “back button” is useless. If you comment in a thread, it’ll either take you back to your comment or somewhere random. Oh, seeing one other thing, when you get to the bottom of the text box, the scroll bars have a fit(blink on an off) as well as the text you’re trying to type.
Keith P.
Page shifts content due to banner ad loading so late in the pageload cycle.
The delayed loading on the tweets makes a lot of the posts here unreadable or a minute or two while the page loads. The loading is sometimes quick, but very often it isn’t, so I’m staring at a post referencing a tweet that has no meaning since the underlying image hasn’t loaded yet. I’ve waited over a minute sometimes for tweets to show up….sometimes it’s easier just to refresh the page.
Happens on Win10/Chromium Edge desktop as well as Android smartphone (Chrome)
MattF
Also, the semi-transparent ‘back’ tab that leads to the previous post tends to get in the way of the comment text area. This is just an annoyance.

I have a PC running Win 10 and a Samsung A21 Android phone. Chrome on both. I don’t seem to get the problems that others have mentioned. My back button is broken again though. It doesn’t go back to the original post I came from but to some random comment and if hit a second time it goes to my first comment which can be way way down the thread.
This may be a sensitive subject. Here I go anyway. I have seen M4 and Adam grousing with each other about the site’s workings and complaining that their input has been rejected. I know too many cooks spoil the broth and backseat drivers and all that, but they are both wicked smart in this area and I feel ignoring their opinions and attempts to contribute is a mistake. Feel free to ignore me if my vague impression is wrong, but I’ve seen this more than once and I want to keep them here.

I usually read B-J on Win10 machines with Chrome (with uBlock Origin), but also use Chrome (+ uBO) on macOS mumble, and Brave on my Android phone (v11, up to date).
Continuing (well-known) annoyances, mostly/always browser independent:
1) Alt+Left arrow (back button) is often crazy, especially after commenting in a thread.
2) Recent Comments “widget” in the right column is broken (doesn’t actually list the Most Recent) if not in the most current (top) thread.
3) In the right column, after Twitter/John Cole’s Twitter there’s a section labeled “[custom-twitter-feeds]” that is blank and probably should be elided?
4) “Copyright © Dev Balloon Juice” – Who is “Dev”?
That’s all I can think of at the moment.
Thanks for all you do.
Cheers,
Scott.

I also usually get only the text tab for comments when a thread first loads. The refresh works.
The back link only ever works for a couple of replies – and it never works in a thread after I have replied to another comment. This is the only thing I really miss, being able to go back through a few posts & then get back to where I started.
MattF
Also, I’ve noticed that the ‘MattF’ nym header over my comments is sometimes linked to my email address. I don’t mind that, but I also don’t think my email address should be made public.

Often on my telephone, and once in a while on my p.c. (Chrome on both), when there’s a post with Twitter links, the pictures take forever to load. Sometimes they never do, even when I refresh, so I just bail and come back later.

Embedded tweets don’t resolve consistently. If I click on one that isn’t resolving, in order to actually read it, it becomes my new front page, even if I held down the ctrl key. I’m running PaleMoon browser (yet another Firefox variant) under BionicPup64 (a lightweight Linux).
Also the inconsistent visual/text thing.

Props again to WaterGirl for all the behind the scenes work – I always picture her under the sink with her digital pipe wrench fixing the ‘tubes…
I read on Safari on an iPad Air 3 – occasionally (maybe 10-15% of the time) when loading the site, it will load in fits and starts, and finally crap out with the message “… could not be loaded because too many errors occurred.” I’ll retry and it will load up normally. This has been going on for a few months.
ETA- sometimes the back button works, sometimes it don’t…

Just got text not visual editor when I refreshed to get rid of a “reply to” link I didn’t want and couldn’t delete. And EVERYTHING requires a manual refresh, this blog doesn’t seem to reload or refresh itself at all anymore when there’s new content, and that’s an annoying bug to me.
I primarily use a Kindle Fire gen 8 with Silk browser and have no similar problems at other sites, including other WP ones. I occasionally use my Android phone and tablet, both current gen OS, both with Chrome and can’t say I see any performance difference in them. Loading is especially slow in early morning, which I attribute to backups running long more than lots of Tweets, since it’s not as noticeable later in the day even on threads with lots of Tweets.

@Another Scott: Oh, I did remember another thing:
Clicked external links usually open in a new tab – as they’re supposed to. But sometimes Twitter/YouTube/other links don’t – it opens in the B-J tab. I haven’t noticed a consistent reason, but when I see that behavior it sometimes seems correlated with other wonky behavior (weird slowness or the next thread not being shown with the right flyout button or …).
Hey, I’m trying to be helpful!! ;-)

This blog is better put together than Windows 10 and Chrome, which both suck.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: It doesn’t happen very often, probably < 1% of the time. And it does seem to happen more frequently when some other unusual wonkiness is happening.

For the past week or so, when commenters link to tweets, when I click, I get “something went wrong” from twitter. But if I go to twitter directly, I can see the tweet. I don’t belong to twitter but I can read tweets.
It may be that this is some change to twitter and has nothing to do with the blog.
Mac laptop, Chrome.

@hells littlest angel: One big thing with the delayed page building after graphical Tweets load is that if one wants to cite a comment in an old thread, then that comment will scroll out of the field of view once the page is done building. So, the reader will have to mess around to see what you’re talking about, and may not bother…
(I try to handle that situation manually by saying things like “in #33 hells littlest angel said” so at least the reader has some idea where they should look.)
I would think that there must be some way to “scroll page to correct position after page is fully built”, but FYWP may have other ideas… :-/
Thanks.

Macbook Air (Big Sur) with Chrome keeps doing this same one weird trick: Whether I get the Visual or Text comment box is completely random, and sometimes (like 10 minutes ago, but not now) there’s only a Text tab with no Visual tab.

Win 10 Pro 64 bit (Version 2004, Build 19041.985), FF 88.0.1.
Also have lately noticed the righthand side slide-out notification often does not show up for maybe a half hour or so, even after multiple refreshes of a comment thread, when a newer front page post has been published. Especially prevalent during the wee hours, blog time.
Inconsistent but noticeable – after clicking Post Comment that comment as well as any immediately following it do not show up until two or three or four refreshes have been done.

Good evening, fellow jackals,
My exceedingly minor gripe: Am viewing this with Waterfox Classic 2021.04.2 on a Dell Inspirion 15 3000 laptop. To comment, must refresh screen, then click ‘Reply’ button. If I just click ‘Reply’ button, get ‘comment window’, but no ‘previous commenter’s name’ or cursor therein.
Irregardless* of that glitch, my thanks to Mr. Cole and Ms. Watergirl and the others responsible for this confabulation.
(Mr. JAFD knows ‘irregardless’ ain’t a word, but sometimes uses it just for the halibut.)

My only real issue: Android/Chrome, Pixel XL. When there’s a banner ad at the bottom and the on-screen keyboard is open to type in a comment, after 3-4 lines, the comment box frequently gets scrolled down so the line I’m on and the cursor are behind the ad.

Had an issue on my other device in the last week where my nym changed to an email and I ended up in moderation. Likely a random auto complete issue with my browser, but that’s the main thing I’ve noticed as of late. Periodically lose the visual mode but that’s usually fixed with a refresh.

Firefox 86.0.1 [1] on Ubuntu, tracking protection turned to Strict, larded up with plugins; the ones that might affect the site include Privacy Badger, NoScript (just google stuff disabled), uBlock Origin, Decentraleyes, Privacy Possum. (Plus some other security/privacy measures, that shouldn’t affect site loading.)
– Embedded twitter scripts don’t load; I just get the text boxes for tweets, similar to comments embedded by non-privileged commenters. Tweets open fine in a new tab.
– Occasionally the visual tab is gone; the little reload button clears it up every time so far.
– Occasionally the last comment in a thread doesn’t have an edit window. (Can be reliably worked around by adding a dummy comment.)
– I turned off embedded youtube scripts a while back, because they were causing gigabytes of memory usage. The links are OIK when run in a separate tab.
Site loads reasonably quickly. Slower in browsers where embedded tweets load fully, but still fine.
No real complaints; thank you all for this site/community.
[1] A Firefox update recently broke lazy tab loading, which is a problem with “23 windows with 4185 tabs”, so I had to regress. Yes, I am an outlier. :-)

PgUp and PgDn keys often don’t work when in a thread
cursor keys often don’t work unless in a comment,
back command never works unless I click on the date/time stamp before I depart… then it appears to remember where I was when I clicked on the date/time stamp to the right of the commenter’s nym.
Visual comment box very rarely works, sometimes the refresh enables it, but then the comment I’m replying to is lost.

Running safari on a mac – have a similar issue noted previously where photos are slow to load and embedded tweets are amazingly slow to load. I see this to some degree on other websites, and understand at least some of this is just how the browser renders things with a default placeholder of some sort that gets resized when the actual graphics file finally gets to the client. The tendency of pages to jerk around as these placeholders fill in can be disruptive and lead to some interesting reading comprehension experiences (the sentence shifts half-way through).
ETA – if I can read the text of the twitter embed, that gives me the most important part most of the time – which I think is essentially some sort of compliance with ADA requirements.
Very much appreciate how much watergirl and john and the rest of the fp-ers put into the site.
Also, I sometimes bring the blog up while I am playing games with WOPR, trying to cheer it up about the status of the human race and our politics. From speaking to people around Cheyenne and Colorado Springs, I understand that various hard-to-trace RFQs have come through the procurement system for willow trees located unreasonably close to structures, mustard in the commissary, and one for placement of a vw in a vacant lot. I understand the trees were planted which seemed to improve WOPR’s mood at the time, and the mustard supply in the commissary was increased in stock on hand and varieties available. Apparently the placement of a car in a vacant lot was stopped before a contract was signed. Thought you should know about these coincidental things that happened…

iMac, Big Sur 11.3.1, just updated.
The reply box is often text rather than visual, either work fine for commenting, but the visual is nicer. I literally just updated and when I opened Safari 14.1 it opened the visual tab. Have to see if it behaves better now. I really don’t have a lot of issues, other than the reply box.
On my iPhone I also often get the text rather than the visual reply box. That is currently updating to the latest software as well so that might work better, will comment when it’s done.

You know you love us.
I will only note that occasionally for me (Firefox up to date, Windows 10) the comment box is occasionally not interactive = can’t do a thing with it. If I reload the page it works so seems like maybe a scripting conflict? I don’t have any ad blocker running here.
This happens occasionally when I use “Reply” the box that shows up doesn’t have a link and is not functional. Reload helps that too.
Editing comment: went to fix a word confusion and the edit box did not work. Reload fixed it.

I’m browsing BJ with Firefox version 88.0.1, on a MacBookPro running MacOS 11.3/BigSur, with a number of professionally-required lockdowns (NoScript, Ghostery, CookieMonster). And the only thing that’s not working is the occasional “defaults to text” comment box, that really doesn’t want to change for that comment. Reloading the page rarely works, but restarting the browser does. PITA. And about once every 3 months, it can’t remember my Nym/email — and yes, restarting the browser fixes that too. I suspect it’s Firefox, not you.
My other browser is Chrome 87.0.4280.163 on an iPad Pro 10.5 in, running iPadOS 14.5.1, defaulting to “desktop view”. The “back” button works once per page, and thereafter goes to whatever I was on previously (bj front page, previous post, start page, what-have-you). This one I blame on Steve fucking Jobs, because I can.

Seriously, the only glitch I see regularly is the visual/text problem in the editor. Not too serious, since I edit in text about half the time anyway. One thing that bugs me is that it’s hard to add regular text after putting something in a blockquote box. The editor wants to put that new text in the box. You have to make sure to put an extra blank line after the stuff you want in the box before you click the blockquote button. Windows 10, Chrome latest version, mostly.

Echo (half of) the experience of poster #2: Balloon-Juice on iPhone (iOS 14) ranges from barely adequate to unusable; it takes forever to load enough so I can scroll, and takes even longer to load photos (the photos in tweets seem to be particularly irksome). Unlike for poster #2, though, my experience on an iPad running iOS 14 is no better.
THe old site was better with this hardware/software setup (this isn’t a comment about appearance, just basic functionality).

It’s not all that common, but the “show full post on front page” button sometimes does absolutely nothing.
By coincidence, Adams post on Israel/Hamas immediately above this one is a current example.
Once again, it doesn’t happen very often, and if this wasn’t the very next post I read, I probably wouldn’t have even reported it. (I’ve already read the post in a separate tab).

Oh, and as for the Visual/Text tabs showing up or not: whether clicking on the “click here to refresh” or using the little spinning arrow at the top of the page, or hitting F5, all seem not to make any difference. Sometimes the tabs are there, sometimes not, with no discernible pattern.
In any case, I come here for the great content, not necessarily to say anything profound. ;)

Dunno if you’re still following at this late point, but…
(macbook mojave 10.14.6, safari) The anchored-back-to-your-place in the thread has been haywire more miss than hit, for a while, but recently in addition am noticing with much more frequency: when going away to follow a tweet, a combo of several of the comments above: sometimes the tweet doesn’t open in a new tab, sometimes it opens but with the error message if is via someone’s embedded link, but opens correctly if clicking on the embedded date link instead, sometimes sent back to the source comment, sometimes back to the top of the post. Cannot seem to figure out a pattern as to why or other clues to help, sadly. But is happening, in some one or more of these combined, much more often in say, the last two weeks or so.

I moved to Safari from Chrome a few weeks ago because of frequent page load crashes. In Safari, things are better, but graphics-heavy pages still crash occasionally. Closing the browser fully and restarting the device clears the issue, which tells me that there are memory management issues in the OS and browsers that are exposed by your page.

To be more specific about some of my technical issues, now that I’m awake and my memory appears to have improved. Linux 18.04.5 and Firefox 88.0.1 or Chrome…
The results of pressing the cursor down button are erratic. Sometimes deep in a thread when I try to slide down a bit, which normally cursor down will do, instead I get the top of the thread, or the bottom of the thread. Similar problems with the up-arrow cursor button.
The “Home” buttom does quite different things depending perhaps upon where the focus is, but irregularly. Rightmost of current line, top of current box, but not always.
I can’t tell where the back navigation arrow at top left of my screen will do, ever. Sometimes if I click on the time/date stamp of the current comment before I surf away inside the thread I can navigate back to the current comment using the back arrow, as it is supposed to work. But not always. Go Back is one of the most standard of all the Internet standards, and it is woefully broken in Balloon-Juice.com — it is what enables surfing on the internet. I just try to note the comment number, so as to be able to do a find or even just page looking for for the comment number if necessary, that usually works.
I usually don’t have more than12 or 15 tabs open, I lose track of which tab is what with too many open.

During the working day M-F 9:00 am to 5:30 pm I sneak in here on Edge, Win10, an old HP laptop, with a lot of proprietary gov’t security software and a lot of the web locked down, most importantly social media and apparently vital to a lot of you, twitter. So if you post a link to twitter, I won’t see it until 6 pm or later, by which time it’s well past its freshness date. Therefore fuck you to all who do that especially without any explanatory context or prefix. A reminder to those who protest get another browser, once more for those who don’t pay attention, and other knowitalls, the above conditions are mandatory. No options.
The only complaint about posting during working hours is that the first post of the day will ALWAYS yield a 405 error. ALWAYS. The solution is to refresh, then go down to the bottom of the page, where the post is ready to hit post again. The second post will-literally-post (hi Steve).
On my non-paid time, I have the Lenovo ThinkPad, the most recent version of Firefox, and oh look I can see twitter posts again, and some of the pictures (some links just break, maybe they’re tired). This is when I get the same oddness in the leave a comment box and ONLY when doing a direct reply, so I drop down a line or two to get out of the way of the mice clutter, type in with no problem. I do not use the icon/emoji/line through features because I am too tired.
Now just for fun I’m going to save this text in case I get a 405.
ETA, no 405 that time, likely because the text was highlighted and went to the clipboard. Hehehe. The willow is too close to the house.

I haven’t read the thread, but the two biggest technical issues I see are the following. (My platforms are Win10, Firefox 88.0.1 64-bit; Android phone with Samsung browser; and Android tablet with Chrome 90.0.)
Both of these things are related, I suspect (but can’t prove), to whatever “buffer” mechanism the developers are using to handle comment flow. I think this is also the cause of artifacts such as people creating a comment and then seeing it disappear until after the page is refreshed several times.
