Shanah tovah to all my Heebs. I’m looking forward to “attending” services tomorrow via Zoom where no one can hear my horrendous Hebrew pronunciations.

I assumed this was for Roman Numerals and didn’t know there was anything about 1000 (M). So I go to the Goolge Machine. The first thing I find is V̅. That’s not what you used so I kept digging. I ended up on the wiki page for 5000.
Now I’m geeking out! “5000 is the largest isogrammic number in the Enlgish language” it says. What’s isogrammic I ask. (Word, phrase or sentence with no repeating letters.) At the bottom of the page I see a list of number between 5000 and 5999 and they have labels like “Super Prime,” “Twin Prime”, “Sophie Gremain Prime,” etc. I’m down a rabbit hole and wishing I had taken more number theory all those years ago in college.

@FelonyGovt: after the past year and a half—never mind the 4 years of TFG—I’d have to assume a LOT of people drank a LOT more booze. So it’s targeted advertising (I get it too).

The Wikipedia entry for Roman Numerals has a section about variations of the form we all learned in school. Some of these are late Empire or Medieval innovations.

A happy day to all who observe!
OT. Two great movies on TCM tonight, starting at 10:30 pm Pacific Time (I think)
First up is The Battle of Algiers. Interesting comparisons to Afghanistan.
Next up is Terrence Malick’s sublime Days of Heaven, starring Richard Gere.

And a restored version of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly starting in 15 minutes.

My mother met her lifelong best friend Gloria while in second grade — in 1929. They have talked nearly every day since and remain best friends after 92 years.
At the beginning of WWII they double-dated a couple of marines friends and later married them when they returned home from the Pacific.
Mom and Gloria went to beauty school together and then opened a beauty parlor. Mom was always proud of being first in her beauty school class.
Our families lived but a few miles apart – Gloria was “Aunt Gloria” to us, and we were “cousins” with Aunt Gloria’s four children. The two best friends even now remain close and talk nearly daily.
Both husbands died relatively early in life from cancer. The bullets and bombs of Iwo Jima and Okinawa did not get them, but being stationed at Nagasaki at the end of the war probably did. Mom and Gloria were left to finish raising the youngest of their nine children alone.
Three weeks ago there was a party for Aunt Gloria’s 100th birthday. (Mom will be 99 in November). My brothers and sisters were invited to the party along with my mom. All of the adults were vaccinated, but someone at the party had COVID. Both grandmothers have tested negative. Four of the adults tested positive but had their shots and three of them are fine so far. One is not. Aunt Gloria’s middle daughter Karen was one of the four to test positive. She passed away this week – her funeral is tomorrow. Karen had MS and was susceptible even though vaccinated. Karen was (it still seems strange using past tense) one of those brilliant people with a kind heart. A lawyer and then a judge, her smile would light up a room. And now she is gone. I cannot imagine the heartbreak Aunt Gloria must feel knowing that what was supposed to be the joyous celebration of her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends has brought such pain to her and her family.
We cannot know whether a Republican party more receptive to science and community action might have diminished the spread of the disease enough to have changed this particular outcome, but it is hard not to think so. Mom and Aunt Gloria have lived long, rich lives filled with love and courage and heartbreak and value, while all the while remaining the best of friends. Yet some treat their lives so trivially – an inconvenience to some who find a mask uncomfortable and nobody can tell them to get vaccinated if they don’t want to.
I don’t know what else to say. Such good people, such unnecessary pain.

Very sorry to hear of your loss.
There are too many stories like this, those needlessly lost to COVID-19.

@patrick II: Oh god, I’m so sorry for your loss, and esp. for your Aunt Gloria. So sorry.

@patrick II:
My deepest sympathies. That is a heartbreaking story.
I keep hearing that vaccinated people can have asymptomatic cases and spread the virus unknowingly. What happened to Cousin Karen really brings that home. Gotta keep on masking up, no matter how hale and hearty we feel.

I am heartbroken tonight. A friend and dear, sweet man passed away this evening after a month long battle with Covid in a FL hospital. He was vaccinated (J&J), but had some lung issues going in. A couple weeks of thinking, “they are going to knock this down,” gave way to, “Good god, this is beginning to sound like so many fatal cases I have read about,” and then two weeks on a ventilator watching things deteriorate. The damn virus just destroyed his lungs, and it was too much. The August into September vigil has been a waking nightmare, and I am just so very sad.
NotoriousJRT
@patrick II: I am so very, very sorry for your loss.

@NotoriousJRT:
My condolences to you.
As Brachiator commented at 36:
It is the needlessness that is so unconscionable. Unlike so many people here, it is the incapability to feel the pain of others that is so jarring.
NotoriousJRT
@patrick II: It is jarring indeed. I find it to be surreal.
