In every media report on inflation, there is one BIG thing missing. Corporate profits as a % of total US income are at their highest level in decades. Prices go up because corporations can raise them, not for all the other reasons they state publicly. https://t.co/JJ65eQqmds

TALIBANDITS!
Fundamentalist Christians are imposing their morality on the rest of us with the help of utterly immoral fascists who care only about looting the nation.

oh, i absolutely believe this, and i believe the counter is true as well, that low-engagement voters generally think that the democrats simply can’t be that much better at everything that the republicans are https://t.co/Ue3jUV10G3
— GOLIKEHELLMACHINE (@golikehellmachi) December 9, 2021
if you offer someone the opportunity to critique your work (which is kinda sorta what an election does), they will find things to critique. a thing that republicans have gotten very successful at is simply refusing to offer any work to critique.

I wish there was a way to not have to revise job figures well after they’re released. It’s distorting (or allowing others to distort) the recovery.
It wasn’t mentioned in the article but I believe there was a combined 700,000 more jobs in November and December.

I love the hashtag #thanksbrandon.

I don’t know if WaterGirl is around, but there was a thread where she was asking the connection between Jeff Zucker’s situation at CNN and that of the Cuomo brothers. This article makes it sound like there was more of a connection than what I had read previously.

During a longer than normal wait for curbside groceries, I was half listening to an NPR segment about inflation and higher wages. There was some chatter that while personal service industries are lagging, people are gobbling up durable goods with their income gains like there’s no tomorrow. Then, the conversation turned to record corporate profits and one commentator pointed out that many companies have raised prices simply because they can.
I was shocked, I tells you. Never thought I’d hear that on NPR.

Oops hubby usually pours my wine but he’s exercising so I did it myself. I seem to have overpoured a bit. How terrible ?

There is a tweet from Media Matters that highlights the Fox News anticipation of a very poor jobs report. They could not contain their excitement at the potential bad news.
Why do these people hate America so much?
Yes, that was a rhetorical question.

@zhena gogolia: That’s awful! But you can’t waste it.

Edit: In response to Meadows talking about job growth during 2020.
One of the biggest reasons there was any kind of recovery after the mass layoffs, when COVID spread in March 2020, is the Democratic controlled House got the CARES Act passed and signed into law before the end of March.
Things were becoming so fucking terrible so fast, even a McConnell led Senate jumped on board to pass legislation that wasn’t just tax cuts for the rich.
I wish someone – the print media, on the cable news networks, in academia, or other places like think tanks – would acknowledge how much House Democrats response differs from Congressional Republicans, when a Democratic President is faced with a challenge.
House Democrats could’ve just treated the record unemployment as a PR battle, like Republicans treat everything, and let things go to pieces hoping blame goes to Republicans, who controlled the Presidency and Senate.
The fact most low information voters are not made aware of this is another in the long lists of failures of our elites to inform the public.
Roger Moore
@debbie:
The problem is that they’re trying to get something out as quickly as possible, and the speed often comes at the expense of accuracy. It would be great if they could be accurate and fast, but it’s not happening. The other problem is that the media is terrible about reporting on the revisions. It’s the classic problem of the flawed report being on the front page and the correction buried somewhere nobody sees it. They need to do something like roll the corrections in with the head-line number (“Combined with revisions to November and December, that means BLS is reporting X new jobs in this report”), or at least give them equal prominence with the headline number for this month.

We on the ground also do a poor job of making that case. It’s a universal problem.

@cain:
I think part of that is because it’s winter.
I know my grocery bills have increased. Except milk, that’s still $1.59 for a half-gallon.

@cain: me too. I usually just get what I want at the grocery store because we are very fortunate, and food and beverage have been our main refuge during the pandemic. But the totals at the register are noticeably higher even for low awareness consumers on price increases.
Time to set up that recurring donation to the food bank. If one has four or fives mouths to feed it would definitely be putting a dent, especially since the child tax payments stopped.

@Roger Moore:
Agreed. I also think Republican administrations have taken advantage of that to hide their overestimates.

If Starbucks finds that demand for their products is relatively inelastic, why shouldn’t they raise prices? If this were milk producers I would care, but nobody has to have a vanilla latte.

Some years ago — maybe five, maybe more, not sure — profits for gasoline/petrol companies skyrocketed. Interestingly enough, the amount of driving didn’t have a commensurate rise. I wonder how that happened, is a puzzlement.
