    Any opinions on the live action Disney remakes, such as the Lion King (2019)? I thought it looked pretty awful. They have a reputation for being unnecessary soulless cash grabs that frequently miss the point of the originals, as well

    Thank you for that video. I think it’s really stupid that there’s grown adults that hate on a movie aimed at families for transparent racist reasons. So many people online try to do the “I’m not a racist, I just want ‘red hair representation’!” thing with the new The Little Mermaid movie.

    It’s insane that trailer on Youtube allegedly got 1.5 million dislikes (which is apparently probably not true because the extension used to “bring back the dislikes” overestimates how many dislikes there actually are)

    I think it’s a heartening thing that young black girls are more and more able to see themselves on the big screen now

    I don’t think I’ve ever seen the racism more transparent.  Their excuses are so asinine, and if you’ve read Hans Christian Andersen’s writing, so obviously based on their imagination, not his writing.

    It’s a tough subject for me because I got about a quarter into Andersen’s collected works, including reading the clusterfuck of WTF that is Little Mermaid, before giving up.  His writing left me with the kinds of scars it is hard not to rant about.

    I posted earlier about the passing of my Chef Cousin Janey after her long, nasty battle with cancer. I was talking with her mom (my “Baby Aunt”) about Janey today, we decided when she reached the other plane, Anthony Bourdain, walked up, handed her a tall vodka on ice, lit a smoke, and said, “Where the hell have you been, the dining room is full and you need to run the kitchen.” Janey grinned,  jumped up, drank a slug of her vodka, got the kitchen staff moving, and started on the entrees. Going to miss my beautiful cousin.

      I hated the Lion King. Took my toddler to it and guess what happens? First thing is that Dad dies. The movie sucked, I can’t believe they thought live (CGI) action would be worth making.

    PS I’ve pretty much hated The Rodent’s movies ever since Pinocchio as a child. Wait, you’re telling me these kids get turned into donkeys and they can’t turn back??????

    A story I heard just recently that gave me a lift, with a side order of vindictive glee.

    Obama is now telling a story that he’d never told before – that when he was president, his daughters were in the UK with their grandmother. Not an official occasion, but the word got to the queen that the president’s daughters were visiting, so she had them and their granny over for tea — and then called out that gold royal coach so the girls could ride it around the palace grounds. A sweet thing to do for an eight and eleven year old.

    But I’m mean-spirited enough to remember a few years back when Trump went to the UK and had his people lobby like crazy to get him a ride in that coach, he all but held his breath till he turned blue. And he didn’t get it.

    I wonder if he’s heard this story yet? Anybody seen ketchup dripping down the walls at Bedminster?

    @Frankensteinbeck: My grandparents lived next door to us when I was a kid, and sometimes we stayed with them when our parents went out. We asked Grandma to read us a story one night and, after hunting around, she found a book of fairy tales. She read us one, got to the ending ,  closed the book, and said, “What kind of a fairy tale is that?”

    I’m right there with you. I was a four-term NH House rep until yesterday. I lost my primary, largely because of a much needed housing bill I sponsored, to a charismatic 19-year-old. He’s a great kid but really? You want to trade a subject area expert for someone who’s barely out of high school.

    Why, yes, we do! Because you were going to make us allow four plexes on in-town streets with municipal water and sewer and That’s Just Not Fair.

    I’m pretty salty about it because the nice kid was urged to run by the Democrats in the next county. In their movie the moderate old white guy would be unseated by charismatic youth and charismatic youth and I would bring progress. That was never going to happen and I told them so. But they didn’t believe me and here we are.

    Democrats are their own worst enemy some days.

    I’m a member of this club too. Ooky, yes, but not as ooky as I imagined. My favorite memory is explaining all the saline syringes and other equipment to TSA when traveling.

    @evodevo: Oh yes, I have read them and Grimm’s were quite a bit better, and the brothers Grimm didn’t seem to hate girls.   I think the only heroine Andersen allowed a happy ending was Thumbelina.

    And the “break” of Merry Minuet finds its way into Lehrer’s “We will all go together when we go” – but that’s the Zeitgeist. 1949 was certainly early for that.

    (In fiction, nuclear war had been described since the 1920s. In 1944 the FBI was sent to talk to the editor of Astounding Science Fiction, who had worked out from the address changes in his magazine subscription list what was going on at Los Alamos, and published the story “Deadline” about it. This is the same guy who suggested the three laws of robotics to Asimov.)
