The nationwide injunction against Trump’s executive order redefining birthright citizenship was struck down. Deconstruction is still in progress:

Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton, which challenged Texas’s Internet age-verification law, is also out (FSC lost), and if you want to read Clarence Thomas’s decision, it is here. This case has been assumed to mainly impact porn sites, but as this January 2025 article at The Verge notes, (archive.is link here if you hit the paywall) it also has grim implications for an awful lot of internet content:
Numerous states have passed age verification rules for online porn, and FSC v. Paxton could directly impact whether they stand up to legal challenges. But its impact could go beyond porn. Both TikTok v. Garland and this case deal with whether the government’s interests — national security for TikTok, protecting kids in FSC — should override free speech concerns. “We’ve got two major cases in five days dealing with whether or not traditional First Amendment law still applies to internet content in the same way,” Terry says.
And several state and federal lawmakers have demanded stronger age verification for social media, sometimes alongside a proposed ban on minors using it. Opening the door to porn verification wouldn’t guarantee those efforts would succeed, but Hans says it could make legislators far more likely to try. “I think that if the Supreme Court said that some form of age verification could be constitutional, that if you’re the state in other situations, they’re going to say, well, extend that reasoning to other substantive areas of internet regulation,” he says.

This ruling leaves the injunction in place as to the actual plaintiffs. While limiting the injunctions universal application.
Going forward, to have a federal district court injunction have universal application is going to require qualifying your case as a class action.
Generally, I agree with this.
That expressed, I continue to believe that for the past quarter century there has been no such thing as “constitutional law.”
What we have are decisions rendered on a case by case basis rooted in partisan politics and/or corruption.

TPM (Josh Marshall’s site) reports that part of the BBbill includes a massive increase in fed worker mandatory payment into the pension system, with the twist that…wait for it…Congresscritters and their staff are exempt.
The increase is from about 9% to about 15%. That is a huge increase – 67% of current. The carve-out is just the spitball cherry on top, I guess, to remind federal workers of their station in life — serfs.

Only briefly scanned, but seems like typical hair splitting based on a distinction without a difference, conveniently overlooking that the Trump admin is clearly trying to use a procedural ruse to avoid dealing with their clearly stated intent to ignore (or at least radically reinterpret) the 14th Amendment. This is a lousy case to decide the issue of universal injunctions for that very reason, that would have been better done in one of those turds handed down by a joker like Kasmaryck. Hard to see this argument about irreparable harm to the Government if the preliminary injunction is upheld. Seems like she’s saying maybe you could do this as a class action (I wouldn’t read too much into Alito’s stupid concurrence) and you’d think this should be a relatively easy class to define, but who the fuck knows with these disingenuous assholes.

In almost all EU countries and the Nordic States there are paths to citizenship, (mostly through marriage) for some. For other’s they will never be citizens per se, but they will have all the rights as a citizen once they have permanent Resident Status.
If they have worked there and resided long enough, they and their children have access to the same benefits as Citizens.
Like Social Security, you have to pay into the system to later get the earned benefit.

What I think is a legitimate question now:
Is it currently safe to live in Texas, in Florida, in Iowa, or in any number of Red States where the State Attorney General would be unlikely to enter into a suit opposing a Department of Justice action based on constitutional grounds?
Because if I’m reading the majority opinion here, it’s saying that even if a Federal Judge finds an action taken against you to be unconstitutional, unless your state is willing to defend your rights you won’t have any.

The AfD peaked in Germany in 2022, losing 5% of their vote share in 2025, and a funny thing is, the core of the AfD are the children of the East German Stazi and the ruZZian ethnics*.
*Poland, and all the Baltics have the same issue. During the Cold War they were a much nicer place to live and settle, and got preferential treatment, than life in the Soviet Union. So they have large ruZZian ethnic populations that swim in ruZZian propaganda all day. Many have even refused to learn the language of their current nation.

Some countries will take you if you can prove that you had a parental link going back 7 generations. Some countries have a skills shortage, that takes priority. Some countries have a labour shortage.
Each country has different requirements for immigration, residency, permanent residency.
In Italy, if you buy an abandoned home in certain mountain villages, restore it and reside there a certain amount of each year, pay your taxes, after 5 years you get permanent residency.
Portugal has similar arrangements.

His Father did not qualify to have him “naturalized” when they were in Germany, because he had been posted to Germany by the US Army for too long a period.
His parents got divorced in Germany, his mother remarried another US Army member, they had their own children and he became a 4th wheel.

In the first young voters in general and male young voters in particular swung hard right. In the second, I’d need to see percentages for the CDU/CSU. The left party Die Linke had a last minute surge among younger voters b/c of an inspiring floor speech from one member castigating Merz for a foul position on immigration. Lots of local factors played a role in the election. I’m not convinced an ideological reading explains the results. The Greens collapsed, for instance.

I can’t find any video yet, but on the 11 AM news, they showed ICE dressed up like they’re going after El Chapo, pouring out of a Bearcat, rushing up to a house, and after busting out a bedroom window and sending in a fucking drone, without so much as a knock, they use some sort of explosive device to bust out / destroy the front door and storm in.
The young woman and her two young daughters are all U.S. citizens, but the goons were looking for her boyfriend who had the misfortune of being backed into by one of the goons cars, which as we all know, makes him guilty of assaulting the storm troopers. Maybe I’ll find the video soon. But damn, this shit has gotta stop!

In Canada, there is an NGO called the Rainbow Railroad. They have annual funding and clearance to exfiltrate 310 LBGTQ2+ from around the world to touch base in Canada, with prior to Taco Don, an agreement that 270 would go to the US. Exfiltration is expensive, dangerous, often requiring fake documents, smugglers, burner phones, safe houses, food and shelter, multiple border crossings, and then, when they get here, there is food, shelter, proper documents, acclimatization, trauma services.
They get 22,700 applications a year and have a waiting list of 2.6 million. These are people who’s own families, let alone the community or the State will happily murder them with no consequences.
Since Jan 6, 2025, they have received 2200 applications from the US. They go to the bottom of the ever growing list. Next year they won’t be at the bottom, they will be about 1/10th of the way up the list.
There are 167.2 million refugees already out there in the world.

Bit-by-bit, there is less and less that us Blue-Staters can do about the rights of decent folks in the Red states. Instead, your rights are in your own hands (and -only- your own hands): you can -move- to a safe jurisdiction.[1] Yes, that can and will involve impoverishment, but then, immigrants the world-over have done that for centuries. Not all immigrants had better lives in their destination countries than in the origin countries. There are many stories of engineers, lawyers, professors, even doctors, who came to the US and worked as janitors, grocery store clerks, and on and on, so that their eventual American-born children could have better lives.
Until state&local governments start openly defying Trump (which would be “illegal”, but so the fuck what), there’s nothing we individuals can do about any of this. Except vote with our feet.
[1] Or you can stay in that Red jurisdiction and hope that things will get better. Surely there were German Jews who did that. Some even survived the war. Then again, hey, maybe we’ll win overwhelming in 2026, and all this will get rolled-back. Sure, sure.

@PatD: Someone– either Marist or Emerson– polled general election matchups a week before the NYC primary. Cuomo got 44%, Sliwa% 15, Adams 10% and Walden 6%, with the rest undecided.
Mamdani as the Democratic nominee got 36%, Sliwa got 17%, Adams 15% and Walden 7%, with 2% more undecided. I’m guessing Cuomo would take votes from Sliwa and Adams, so I don’t see a path to victory for any of those three, especially considering they are known quantities to New Yorkers.
Also, this poll under-estimated Mamdani’s strengh in the primary, so it likely did in the general election as well.

Both Canada, Australia and New Zealand are signatories to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which prohibits discrimination based on disability in immigration.
There are caveats. At least one adult must be a “highly needed skills person”, the family must be financially stable, the dependent child will have to undergo a medical examination. A high needs child may require a bond or the family enough income to ensure that the child will not over tax the support systems.
If they qualify, they go on the waiting list.
And of course, the applicants will need a sponsor, be it an employer or a financially stable family member.

@Omnes Omnibus: I get it, but that does sound a bit like the type of wishful thinking that has led to the point we’re at now, e.g., “just wait, they’ll finally draw a line in the sand.” This Court has been creating messes for quite a while and Congress has done nothing to stop them. Seems like the only recourse is to go nuclear on them and pack the Court the minute that becomes possible. Republicans already packed the Court by allowing Leonard Leo to grow test tube justices that were implanted by GOP presidents while using procedural bad faith to block a Dem president from replacing a dead conservative justice. That was fundamentally breaking the truce. I don’t have a lot of faith that these folks won’t be able to weasel around statutory attempts to constrain them.

@PatD: There is a downside to an independent Cuomo run: he’ll run a negative campaign and try to dirty Mamdani up. So Cuomo could do damage even if he doesn’t win. Mamdani seems to have good political skills and judgement though, and he could weather Cuomo’s attacks and come out the better.
The potential problem would be exacerbated if Democratic office holders support Cuomo, but I think they’ll be smart enough not to. They know that Republicans want to nationalize this race, and so do some of Mamdani’s more vehement supporters.

Are they a naturalized citizen, or is there proof that a (direct) female ancestor a naturalized citizen, or do they have genetic evidence that a (direct) male ancestor was a proven naturalized citizen?
And if denaturalization is allowed, basically the citizenship of any American can be revoked, by finding disqualifications in their citizenship application or that of their naturalized direct female ancestor(s).

IANAL, but if someone moved from TX to MA, couldn’t a clerk in MA, when presented with a TX birth certificate showing a child was born in the US, get a social security # for the child? Couldn’t parents temporarily move to MA, and get a US passport for their kid?
Also, I couldn’t tell if this ruling limits Courts of Appeal from issuing nationwide injunctions, or even injunctions that span the entire Appeals Court’s region.
