From our Food Goddess, Tamara:
Tonight I’m putting together a menu from two different restaurant visits. Last Friday night Bad Horse and I were in Santa Monica looking for somewhere to have a late dinner. I wanted something light at a place that was neither trendy nor pretentious. Harder to find than you might think. We settled on a cute little Thai restaurant on Wilshire, near the beach. They had pineapple rice on the menu and that sounded like it would fit the bill. I was pleasantly surprised by the dish. First, they served it in a pineapple, which made me laugh and second it was hands-down better than the Ming Tsai recipe I posted a few months ago. I vowed to go home and recreate it. That is our main dish tonight. The dessert comes from a little Italian restaurant near my house where LFern and I had lunch, I believe for my birthday this summer. I ordered their always excellent carrot cake and she decided to try their chocolate torte. We both really liked the torte (ours is a friendship based on coffee and chocolate) and I said I’d try and recreate it for her. It’s 5 months later, but I finally got around to it. Hopefully it will not disappoint her – I really liked it and had fun making it, twice.

I baked bread tonight for the first time in years. Darn I’m good. Finally keeping that new years resolution from 2004.

I like your friendship.

Very very nice.

Since this is an Open Thread, I’ll mention I watched O’Reilly a little while ago (yes, even voluntarily; consider it scouting the opposition). I has a sad after that little viewing episode; the President’s call for civility was only a call for the Left to tone it down (as the Right has apparently BEEN acting civil). Obama did nothing to quiet the crowd in a Memorial Service (you knew that was coming). It was the kickoff of the 2012 campaign (same thing; you KNEW that was coming). I thought Fox might tone it down a bit, but if that show was an indication, they are in for a penny, in for a pound. I thought about watching Hannity, but he’s a sick fuck and I know he can’t tone it down. I bailed on the show before the first commercial break, so for the first advertiser, well, too bad for them.
TaMara (BHF)
@Suffern ACE: How did the bread turn out?
Also, has anyone tried the 5-Minute Bread books
I’ve bookmarked one to buy forever now, and it was either a recommendation from BJ or my blog, I don’t remember, but I’m curious if anyone has had any experience with the method.

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton will skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft.
NO, REALLY? What a shocker.
Mike Kay
need a recipe for Matzah ala christo-hemoglobin.

@stuckinred: I’m a bit surprised, the pay cut is going to be a bitch
MikeJ
@Mike Kay: It’s nice with a little cheese on top. We make little pizzas.

@stuckinred:
Over/under on Auburn having to vacate the Championship trophy? I’ll go for a year and a half.
stuckinred
@The Dangerman: It may take a bit longer but 2.5 tops!
Suffern ACE
@TaMara (BHF): I left it in the oven a little too long, but it will do. I used to bake bread quite often. I’ll need to bake more before the ingredients go bad or it will end up being a very expensive loaf.
The Dangerman
@stuckinred:
I figure something comes out when the former FBI types investigate him for the NFL; they want to know everything about a player before they give them 8 figures.
stuckinred
@The Dangerman: Yea, like they did with Vick! :)
KG
@The Dangerman: I bit the bullet and flipped over the FNC. Rand Paul was on talking about how we can’t raise the debt ceiling without having a balanced budget amendment.
And then I couldn’t watch anymore.
MikeJ
@The Dangerman: You know how the on screen guide gives a generic show description if they don’t have info on a specific guest? Like, “Jon Stewart’s satiric take on the news of the day.”
For Poppa Bear it says, “The bestselling author mixes news, interviews and analysis.”
Bestselling author? Well, I guess he is now. Selling books is easier with free advertising every night. But is that the best way to describe him?
Pooh
@The Dangerman: I already congratulated Oregon on their 2013 victory in the 2011 National Championship game.

The Palmetto State Armory pulled the Wilson gun and Joe wrote and thanked them for doing so.

Point taken, but I think Vick started his dog operation AFTER he was given 8 figures…
Bruce (formerly Steve S.)
Is there a link that documents in one handy place all the violent rhetoric, specifically gun rhetoric, that has been used by politicians and pundits in the last couple of years? I’m specifically interested in politicians and mass media types, not the odd sign-carrier at a rally. Any response will be appreciated.
stuckinred
@The Dangerman: Nah, he’d been a player all along. He may have started THAT operation after but he was in it. Actually I do think you are right about the scrutiny because of Vick.
eta
Guess you are right, wiki lists 2007.
MikeJ
@Bruce (formerly Steve S.): Just yesterday on an open thread somebody was given three or four different lists. Perhaps clever googling with a site:balloon-juice.com prefix limited to yesterday would turn it up.
The Dangerman
@stuckinred:
Perhaps increased scrutiny, but it’s been in place for a long time. Dog fighting might not be high on their list of priorities, but anything like drugs or any hint of shaving points is a bigtime worry.
stuckinred
@The Dangerman: Well, that’s where I go back then. Mike was a thug from jump street. (I’m a Hokie fan and I actually don’t begrudge him a second chance).
KG
@KG: ok, flipped back on and it’s the same shit from Hannity, “he didn’t say ‘don’t blame conservatives’ so it’s all hollow rhetoric” (not an exact quote). though, i am a little surprised that there are two people on who have stood up to Hannity and the conservative voice on the panel.
ETA: one panelist mentioned stuff coming from the right and Hannity asked for an example and then said, he can think about it over the commercial break. might be worth tuning in to see what the guy comes up with.

@The Dangerman:
I don’t know. How long was USC able to drag it out? Five years?
Did USC have to give back the trophy? If so, who has it now?
The Dangerman
@Mark S.:
Yes, but they were USC; if it was Alabama or Texas, I’d up it to several years. Auburn isn’t big enough to get the same level of “oh shit, do we really punish them?”
Yes and nobody; it’s just vacated.

@KG:
Let me know if someone is actually prepared.
How about
Gee, where was “wait, maybe we can vote” as a choice.

@The Dangerman:
There was a huge billboard in Tucson, black with bullet holes in it, the copy read:
RUSH Limbaugh
Straight Shooter.
Newstalk 790, KNST
They took it down on Monday. Of course, Rush is just an “entertainer”! And it didn’t mean what it meant, right?
KG
@Suffern ACE: unfortunately, the guy stumbled over the answer. he talked about McCain having to calm people down at a rally in 2008. but missed some of the other more obvious examples, like “second amendment remedies” or “palling around with terrorists” or Rush saying that liberals want to destroy America or Tea Party signs saying that they came unarmed this time.
KG
@efgoldman: in the last couple of games this year, Tebow was pretty good. the problem with quarterbacks is that very few are actually ready to play as rookies. And if you get drafted in the first half of the first round as a quarterback, you should probably get a neurologist on retainer for all the concussions you’ll be getting behind a bad offensive line.
Suffern ACE
@KG: Asshole. (Not you, the lazy ass who likes to preen on TV, make accusations and not have clear evidence. Who trains these guys, Joan Walsh?)

I’ll go out on a limb and predict Newton has as much success as Jamarcus Russell.

@TaMara (BHF): That torte looks like pure sin. I think I’m going to give it a try this weekend.
Today is my dad’s birthday. Mom made him an angelfood cake, since he doesn’t care for chocolate cake. He related the story about my aunt helping my great aunt plan ahead for her funeral service. They came to serving refreshments afterward, and after they agreed on the buffet Martha asked about desert.
Carol: I’ll probably bake a couple of chocolate cakes.
Martha, after a pause: But I don’t like chocolate cake.
Carol: You won’t be having any.

Here’s a start.
Mnemosyne
I bought about 1.5 pounds of stewing beef but now I can’t decide which of the bajillions of beef stews I should make. I like the classic (potatoes, carrots, peas plus a little wine or beer) but I’m kind of tempted by this Zinfandel Cherry Beef Stew.
TaMara (BHF)
@debit: Had to read the story twice to get it. I envy anyone who can make an angel food cake, mine always end up burnt or spread all over the oven. I buy mine. Luckily King Soopers (Krogers/Ralphs) makes an excellent one. I favor sour cream angel food cake myself.
TaMara (BHF)
@Mnemosyne: That recipe looks good – I love fruit with red meats.
EDIT: I’m wondering if they really mean that much salt and pepper? Seems excessive.
Yutsano
@TaMara (BHF): I looked to see if they suggest using the S&P anywhere else but they don’t as far as I can tell. Even for four pounds of meat that’s pretty excessive.
Mnemosyne
@TaMara (BHF):
@Yutsano:
I suspect it’s the common internet problem of someone typing in a recipe and getting tsp and Tbsp mixed up.
Yutsano
@Mnemosyne: Actually looking at the proportions of the herbs I think things are a wee bit off there. 1/2 cup of thyme would taste like a freshly mowed lawn in your mouth. And 1/4 sage would be even stronger. I’m wondering if a lot of the issue is this was converted from a metric recipe and the maths are just wrong.
