I’m not watching the Cain “Imagine” video, I have strong memories of that song. I remember, right after 9/11, Neil Young did a version of it and it was getting played everywhere, even on pop radio in the south (where I lived at the time), despite the “imagine no religion” part. Then, they suddenly stopped playing it at all as we moved into the Lee Greenwood phase of the post 9/11 era.
I also remember John Denver doing a version of it on David Letterman, only the song was about sporks, spoon-forks. It ended “Imagine all the spoon forks, helping man to eat, you can say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one, I hope someday you’ll join us, in a world where spoons and forks are one.”
Anyone know how I can find this on Hulu or whatever the kids are calling it these days?
Update. I think it was actually spoon-straws.
Update. Apparently Hulu hates Letterman, so no go. Consider this an open thread then.
Update. Ask and ye shall receive! Thanks!
Roger Moore
Using this new-fangled Google thing, I can find some lyrics where he’s talking about spoons and straws being as one. Perhaps that’s what you’re remembering. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any videos.

We need to get you on das Twittürz, Herr Dougerhead.

Is bleg another word for open thread?
I made pumpkin bread at the request of my daughter and I didn’t notice until I had to add 3 cups of sugar that it makes two loaves. I don’t need 2 loaves. Why do recipes do this???
It is delicious though.

Hulu, owned by NBC, probably doesn’t have a huge interest in old David Letterman and Conan O’Brien bits. I’m sure you can find Jay Leno picking his nose from 1983. But those guys? That footage just went missing somehow or another.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@cathyx: I thought it was a blog beg??
To beg for money on a blog. Beg + blog == bleg.
I hate to bleg, but my car just got totaled and I really need some money to continue bringing you this high-quality blog material.
arguingwithsignposts
@Raven (formerly stuckinred): since the bleg has been answered, doesn’t the thread default to an Open Thread?
Hmmm … I have my Blog Statutes and Guidelines series here somewhere, I believe it was volume XVII…
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@arguingwithsignposts: There’s only one thread, the open thread. . . one love.
Roger Moore
@arguingwithsignposts:
I think that all threads automatically revert to being open threads when people get sufficiently bored with the original topic. I don’t know if that’s an official policy, but it seems to be the de facto rule.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@Roger Moore: “official policy” THAT is funny.

I too am going to pass on Cain’s little pizza ditty. I was living in New York at the time of John Lennon’s murder; I’ve always associated “Imagine” with that.

@cathyx: Freeze one. It freezes very well and later you can have a treat with no effort.

Was it a millionaire who said imagine no possessions?

@ABL: yep, just bite the bullet. I’ve convinced my GBFF to get a twitter account cause it’s actually more private than FB for me…go figure.

ok, it’s been a long time since I watched HGTV’s House Hunters. I was waiting on the cable guy, so I’m watched it.
First of all let me say that the cable guy was kinda cute, but why oh why don’t my cable guy/delivery me look like this: My Dream Delivery Guy
Back to HGTV, what the heck are all these 20-somethings’ who are buying homes and condos for 250,000 to 500,000 dollars??? WTF do they do? It boggles my mind! and makes me a little pissy. I admit it. Ugh, this is probably why I stopped watching House Hunters!
Mnemosyne
@MikeJ:
To defend Jay B. (and God knows I never thought I’d type those words), he’s referencing this song.

anybody watching Lawrence O’Donnell? Was that Bonnie Raitt sitting next to Hillary CLinton at Bill’s Gaga party?
lol
Obama got the cell phone companies to agree to send out free text alerts when you’re about to go over your plan’s limits.
I’m sure President McCain would’ve done the same thing so both sides are equally bad, vote Romney.

@Jenny: I have no beef with his being rich and caring about the poor. It was the way he treated his older son that always leaves me with a sour, cynical taste in my mouth when people start singing hymns to the Dalai Lennon.
@lamh34: I didn’t get the appeal of Lady Gaga when she was calling herself Madonna.

anyone catch Barney Frank on Rachel Maddow just now? he basically told Rachel, that he supports the OWS movement, but the teaparty is powerful because they also took political action. Mr. Frank said that the reason why the GOP congress are full subsidiaries to the Tea Party Movement is becasue the Tea Party voted and they lobby people. which led to current GOP members to be “afraid” to stand up cause they may be primaried.
Mr Frank was a great interview, Rachel did a lot of talking over him, and kinda tried to make it seem like Barney was saying that the rallying is not useful, but Frank quickly told her that’s not what he was saying. He said that the rallying and protesting was good, but that it needs to also be felt at the voting booth…
Anyway, I thought it was a good segment. if anyone finds the video later, I’ll post.
cathyx
@gelfling545: I did just throw it in the freezer before I read your comment. I’m glad to hear that it freezes well, I wasn’t sure. I’d hate to take it out later and find it’s ruined and I could have given it to someone instead.
lamh34
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: @arguingwithsignposts:
Maybe I missed the rest of the segment, cause the part I caught, was Gaga changing the lyrics of Bad Romance to we all want a little “Bill-Romance” in her high slitted unitard and then stopping in front of the old horn dog and doing what Gaga does best I guess. Hilary and Chelsea were there, but it was too much for me…

A foodie question since this is now an open thread: I have leftover fried chicken and waffles (fancy ones, from this gastropub). Reheat or eat cold?
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@Mnemosyne: I’m eatin em cold. What would Gladys do?

@Mnemosyne: I would reheat in a toaster oven not the microwave.

Clear Channel Radio, the nations largest owner of radio stations banned “Imagine” after 9/11 and I believe it still is….
I’m a huge Lennon fan. Didn’t think I would like the movie “Nowhere Boy” but really enjoyed it. Can’t ever get enough of The Beatles.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@lamh34: I saw that bit, too, and had the same reaction as you and L. O’D. Hillary’s a good sport, and at this point in her life, she shouldn’t have to be.

Fine. Just don’t sing about “imagine no possessions” from gold plated palatial digs. As he said, “it isn’t hard to do”.

@Jenny: Neil Young sang it
“Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if I can”.
It was beautiful, and very self-aware.

I hope this was for illustrative purposes only. Because if not, you’re having a shit week and it’s only Monday.

John Lennon didn’t mean it literally, much as “Blessed are the Cheesemakers” refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.
Bono can still give a crap about poverty and starvation, and do some good in the process. And everyone can mention how pretentious he is while still finding out about new countries where starvation is occurring only because Bono brought it up.
jon
Also, John Lennon had a big nose.

In the MLK thread, people tried to make hay of the statue of MLK, I dare anyone to look at this pic and still feel the same way.

I wouldn’t watch that Cain video either because I won’t defile that song by association. Although, I thought you didn’t like the song, DougJ…Didn’t you feel it pretentious or something?
jon
@jon: I didn’t mean the actual starving occurred because Bono brought it up, though I’m certain that U2, like Dethklok, can somehow be responsible for such things when they’re vying to be the World’s Sixth Most Powerful Cultural Force.
