They don’t just control our current financial environment and all of our debt, they also control our future:

An Iraqi plan to award six no-bid contracts to Western oil companies, which came under sharp criticism from several United States senators this summer, has been withdrawn, participants in the negotiations said on Wednesday.

Iraq’s oil minister, Hussain al-Shahristani, told reporters at an OPEC summit meeting in Vienna on Tuesday that talks with Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Total, BP and several smaller companies for one-year deals, which were announced in June and subsequently delayed, had dragged on for so long that the companies could not now fulfill the work within that time frame. The companies confirmed on Wednesday that the deals had been canceled.

While not particularly lucrative by industry standards, the contracts were valued for providing a foothold in Iraq at a time when oil companies are being shut out of energy-rich countries around the world. The companies will still be eligible to compete in open bidding in Iraq.

Since that time, however, Iraq’s central government has moved on with other energy deals. The Oil Ministry last month signed its first major post-Hussein contract with the China National Petroleum Corporation. On Sunday, the Iraqi cabinet approved a deal with Shell to process natural gas in southern Iraq.

In the year 2100, the bestselling history book will be “The Decline of the American Empire,” and it will be written in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

I am sorry you all had to get caught up in it, but I will point out that we are all moose now.

Mike Huckabee, Meet Rick Davis

Could someone throw Mike Huckabee a bone and clue him in? He just sounds so naive when he writes things like this:

Last night, while on Hannity & Colmes I cut Barack Obama some slack on his reference to “lipstick on a pig.” Now I personally don’t think he was referring to Gov. Palin, but if he was he should apologize immediately.

Almost twenty four hours into this new controversy and the accusations are continuing to fly from both campaigns. That’s too bad.

Let’s shift back to the issues. Barack Obama released an education proposal yesterday that has plenty of faults. Lets talk about it instead. Republicans have been arguing correctly for choice in our schools and adding accountability. Lets spend our time and energy focusing on what we stand for. There is plenty to talk about.

A return to the issues is what the American people expect and it is a mistake to think that our Republican ideas somehow can’t compete with the Democrats. And frankly, if anyone tells you otherwise, that dog won’t hunt.

Mike, Mike, Mike. You just don’t get it, do you? Here is McCain’s campaign:

Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain’s presidential bid, insisted that the presidential race will be decided more over personalities than issues during an interview with Post editors this morning.

“This election is not about issues,” said Davis. “This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates.”

Not only will that dog not hunt, Huck, it ain’t even a hunting dog.

This trailer to the movie IOUSA was mailed to me, and it is worth watching:

The other crazy thing about the McCain/Palin gambit to lie repeatedly about the Bridge to Nowhere is that they are making earmarks the central focus of their campaign, as if earmarks were the major problem. Now granted, no one likes wasteful spending, but really, some perspective is necessary:

For my part, I think the Republican preoccupation with earmark reform reveals a truly bizarre view of what is wrong with the federal government and how its dysfunction might best be fixed, as if pork-barrel spending were the main problem with Republican governance over the last decade. Still, this is the field where McCain and Palin have chosen to fight, and this is what they are choosing to lie about, so it seems fair that they pay some political price for that.

The total national debt, as I write this, is $9,679,000,000,000.00 (nine and a half trillion).

The Budget for 2008 is close to $3,000,000,000,000.00 (three trillion).

Our budget deficit for this year is going to range in between $400-500,000,000,000.00 (four hundred to five hundred billion, give or take a few billion).

The total value of wasteful earmarks in 2008 (according to CAGW) will be approximately $18,000,000,000.00 (eighteen billion).

In other words, when McCain talks about earmarks, he is talking about 3% of our annual budget deficit, .6% of our annual budget, and a number too small to even report when discussing our national debt. Or, put another way, he is talking about two months in Iraq, something he wants to keep going indefinitely.

Not only are they lying about Palin’s involvements with earmarks, they are just not being serious about the horrible economic problems we face. These are not serious people.

The hits keep coming from the Palin trainwreck, and I think the thing that amazes me the most is the way that the right-wing has simply circled wagons around her. There really is no one on any of the right-wing blogs (other, of course, than Daniel Larison and the folks at Amconmag, who you should be reading every day anyway) trying to put the brakes on this mess. It is all spin, all nonsense, all sheer babble- they really are serious about promoting this wingnut to the #2 spot. They simply are not serious people. At any rate, more awesome from our female Bush:

Gov. Sarah Palin is being asked by a local Republican activist to release more than 1,100 e-mails she withheld from a public records request, including 40 that were copied to her husband, Todd.

Palin had claimed executive privilege for documents copied to her husband, who is not a state employee, in responding to an open records request in June made by Andrée McLeod, an activist in Anchorage. The administrative appeal filed yesterday by McLeod’s attorney, Donald C. Mitchell, argued that by copying Todd Palin on sensitive state correspondence, the governor and her aides shattered the privilege rightly afforded elected officials.

“She has allowed Todd Palin — who has not been elected by the people of Alaska, who is not a state employee — to entangle himself apparently as he sees fit in the operations of the executive branch of the state government,” Mitchell said.

“From the case law, if government voluntarily opens up that internal decision-making to what I would call civilians, then that is waiver of that protection of the government policy decision-making process. That is what happened here, and it happened because Sarah Palin doesn’t understand it,” he said.

All the mendacity, shamelessness and desire to be a law-breaking crook just like Bush/Cheney, but without the technical and legal competence. But wait… It gets better:

Palin also routinely does government business from a Yahoo address, [email protected], rather than her secure official state e-mail address, according to documents already made public.

“Whoops!” Palin aide Frank Bailey wrote, after addressing an e-mail to the governor’s official state address. “Frank, This is not the Governor’s personal account,” a secretary reminded him.

Mitchell’s appeal, addressed to Palin in her capacity as the decision-maker on the earlier records request, questions the wisdom of the governor and her aides shipping messages about state business between their public and private e-mail accounts “with complete and total abandon,” he said.

“There’s a reason the governor should be using her own official e-mail channels, because of security and encryption,” the lawyer said. “She’s running state business out of Yahoo?”

Has anyone snatched up [email protected] yet?

And by the way, Sullivan really just nails it here. What McCain has done with his campaign and his VP choice is just disgraceful.

How many days before the Palin administration has computer problems and loses all the e-mails in question, just like Bush/Cheney? I give it a week.
