In March 1967, the 90th Senate, controlled by the Democrats, voted unanimously to confirm barking moonbat Ramsey Clark as Lyndon Baines Johnson’s Attorney General.
Robert Byrd sat as a member of that Democrat Senate, and today he voted with the minority to maintain the filibuster against Miguel Estrada for his extreme views.
If it were funny I would laugh.
HH
Actually they’re filibustering him both because his views are extreme and because they haven’t been able to find out his views… but they’re extreme.
Aakash
Yes, this is quite ridiculous.
And very good point, HH.
John, btw, are you a teacher or a student? Or both?
Just wondering…
Walt Pohl
Was Ramsey Clark always nutty? And if he was, wouldn’t it have been better if the Senate had filibustered his appointment?
John Cole
Estrada isn’t nutty. He just isn’t to the left of Ruth Ginsberg. I don’t like Estrada’s views on many issues, I just don’t like the minority party being able to subvert the process. Vote him up or down, and get on with it.
Walt Pohl
Would you support eliminating filibusters entirely?
John Cole
A better question would be- Do I support the minority being able to require a super-majority vote whenever they want..
Walt Pohl
That’s how the system is set up. There are any number of ways in which majority rule is flouted in the US. The Senate itself, for example. The ability for judicial nominees to be blue slipped by a Senator from their state. The ability to bottle up a bill or a nomination in committee. Do you want all of these fixed? Would you support a unicameral proportional representation legislature? Would you support direct election of presidents?
Andrew Lazarus
Ramsey Clark wasn’t nearly so strange then. The current Ramsey Clark wouldn’t be confirmed as a postmaster, we all know that.
John Cole
Actually, Walt, I am not sure what I want done. I really don’t think Estrada represents the viewpoints I would want on the court, at the same time, I enjoy watching the Democrats engage in such petty and childish behavior. Likewise, the amount of time wasted on this means they will have little time to do more destructive things- like pass legislation.
John Cole
Andrew- I would hope not- he is currently a frothing lunatic.
