Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wait, what?

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Petty moves from a petty man.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

This blog will pay for itself.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

On a Roll

Scott Ott is a genius:

New York Times columnists Nicholas Kristof and Paul Krugman, whose power and influence dwarf those of the President, finally forced Mr. Bush to confess his deception.

“I guess I really didn’t think this thing all the way through,” Mr. Bush said. “I just thought I’d tell the people Iraq has WMD, then start a war…and…uh…that’s as far as it got in our strategy sessions.”

The President added that, despite the blow to his popularity ratings this revelation would surely bring, “at least we got the oil.”

I hope the Atriettes realize this is satire.

Grumble:

The Atlantic Coast Conference reached deep into its expansion playbook late Tuesday and pulled a shocking end run.

School presidents and chancellors voted Tuesday night to invite Miami and Virginia Tech to join the conference — a scenario that excludes fellow would-be Big East defectors Boston College and Syracuse.

Sources also told ESPN that the vote was 7-2 in favor of inviting the two football powerhouses.

I hate Donna Shalala. Lying troll.

European Police State

by John Cole|  June 25, 20038:11 am| 3 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

One of the things that irritates me the most is hearing liberals tell me how good it is to be European. “They have a better quality of life, shorter work weeks, paid vacation, socialized medicine, blah, blah, blah.” Here is the latest perk for the Eurotrash:

Sexist or raunchy images on television or in advertising could be banned across the European Union under a directive being considered in Brussels.

Anna Diamantopoulou, the Greek commissioner for social affairs, has ordered an internal study of gender questions outside the workplace, it was confirmed last night.

But officials said discussions were still in their early stages, with different commission departments being asked for their views, and some already strongly opposed.

“This is a trial balloon,” insisted one well-placed source. “No decision has yet been taken.”

Such a directive could have implications for Europe’s media, advertising and insurance industries, and could stop TV programmes that stereotyped women – or men – and ban advertising that did not “respect human dignity”.

That would mean no more of this:

Someone needs a divorce and criminal lawyer:

Police have arrested a Nashville-based Christian songwriter accused of being a peeping Tom.

Andrew Gullahorn, 27, was accused of placing a video camera inside a bag and putting it underneath the door of two separate dressing rooms at Cool Springs Galleria last month.

Dumb.

Gullahorn is married to Christian recording artist Jill Phillips.

Really fricking dumb.

Powell v. Mugabe

by John Cole|  June 24, 20036:39 pm| 14 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

Colin Powell has an excellent op-ed in the NY Times:

A brave man recently met with me and described how life in his country has become unbearable. “There is too much fear in the country, fear of the unknown and fear of the known consequences if we act or speak out,” explained Pius Ncube, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Yet Archbishop Ncube speaks out fearlessly about the terrible human rights conditions in Zimbabwe, and is threatened almost every day with detention or worse.

For hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans, the worst has already come. Millions of people are desperately hungry because the country’s once-thriving agricultural sector collapsed last year after President Robert Mugabe confiscated commercial farms, supposedly for the benefit of poor blacks. But his cynical “land reform” program has chiefly benefited idle party hacks and stalwarts, not landless peasants. As a result, much of Zimbabwe’s most productive land is now occupied by loyalists of the ruling ZANU-PF party, military officers, or their wives and friends.

Of course, the French are there to help. They are going to re-build Zimbabwe’s airlines!

Tough Crowd

Jeebus- another reason to avoid karaoke (as if there weren’t enough already):

A 25-year-old Filipino man has been stabbed dead for singing a Frank Sinatra classic out of tune during a birthday party.

Police officer Noel Albis said the victim, Casimiro Lagugad, was asked to sing Sinatra’s popular song My Way during the party in the Manila suburban city of Caloocan on Sunday.

“Witnesses said the suspect, Julio Tugas, 48, one of the guests and a neighbour of the victim, got irked because Lagugad was singing out of tune,” Officer Albis said.

“Tugas suddenly attacked the victim and stabbed him in the neck,” he added.

Guests rushed Mr Lagugad to the hospital, but he died while being treated.

Tough crowd.

More Good News

More good news for the economy, bad news for Democrat political ambitions:

Stocks held gains at midmorning on Tuesday after a better-than-expected report on U.S. consumer confidence in June helped soothe investor concerns about the economy’s ability to match expectations built into the market’s three-month rally.

The Conference Board reported its U.S. Consumer Confidence Index slipped to 83.5 in June from 83.6 in May. Economists in a Reuters survey had predicted the June number would come in at 82.4.

“(The consumer confidence index) was a decent number and people are breathing a sigh of relief,” said Tony Cecin, managing director at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. “There’s still concern for earnings going forward and people feel things are getting better, but they still need signs to evaluate that.”

Currently, the DOW is up 60.
