Bill Bennett, One More Time

by John Cole|  May 7, 20031:54 pm| 4 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

I have written about the Bennett gambling fiasco here, here, and here. I shouldn’t have wasted my time, and instead should have just directed you to Arthur Silber’s joint, because he says everything I wanted to the way I wanted to.

So when the question of hypocrisy is raised in connection with the recent revelations, most people are viewing the issue precisely backwards. It obviously isn’t the case that Bennett railed against the evils of gambling, while privately gambling away millions of dollars. What is notable is that Bennett did not rail against the “private” behavior of gambling — while at the same time, he did rail against the sins of drug use, the strong inadvisability (in his view) of legal recognition of same-sex marriage, and other similar “sins.” And the point is simply this: if you proceed from a consistent recognition of individual rights, there is no principled method by which to distinguish among these various behaviors — and, again, unless someone violates the rights of others, these behaviors should be outside the bounds of governmental concern altogether.

But it is Bennett himself who advocates government intrusion into what ought to be private concerns. Because he has no principled approach to these matters, however, he advocates governmental regulation of those behaviors he personally views as “wrong,” while exempting those behaviors of which he approves. And we now find out that he also exempts those behaviors that he himself engages in. As someone might say: how convenient.

Just beautiful. Go read the whole thing and hit his tip jar.

I’m Skeptical About This Too

Sen. Shelby is right to be skeptical, and these companies have a long way to go before people should feel confident in them, as I have stated before. Name changes and some small fines are not enough (remember, Citigroup Global Markets is just a new name on the corrupt Saloman Smith Barney). In Shelby’s words:

“I believe that the Wall Street culture must change from the top down, and I am not convinced that the (settlement) has done enough to change attitudes at the top” of the big investment firms, Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., the committee’s chairman, said at a hearing called to examine the accord. “Without holding executives and CEOs personally accountable for the wrongdoing that occurred under their watch, I do not believe that Wall Street will change its ways or that investor confidence will be restored.”

There is a one word solution for this problem- handcuffs. When corrupt executives ruin peoples lives and finances, they deserve to be locked up like rats.

Oh, That Terrorist Connection

Interesting:

A federal judge Wednesday awarded nearly $104 million in damages to the families of two victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, finding the plaintiffs had provided some evidence that Iraq provided support to Usama bin Laden and Al Qaeda.

OK. Now what the hell does this mean:

He said lawyers relied heavily on “classically hearsay” evidence, including reports that a Sept. 11 hijacker met an Iraqi consul to Prague, Secretary of State Colin Powell’s remarks to the United Nations about connections between Iraq and terrorism, and defectors’ descriptions of the use of an Iraqi camp to train terrorists.

Baer said the opinions of the lawyers’ experts was sufficient to show that Iraq collaborated in or supported bin Laden’s terrorist acts on Sept. 11.

The judge noted that the experts provided few actual facts that Iraq provided support to the terrorists.

OK. I’ll play. We have circumstantial evidence, but no firm evidence.

Jason Kidd beats his wife, and nothing really happens.

Bob Ryan- one of the best sports reporters ever, IMHO- states that he would like to smack Joumana Kidd for being obnoxious, and he is in danger of losing his career.

I wonder which one of the two will hurt Joumana- Jason’s fists or Ryan’s words.

I wonder what the Dixie Chicks, Tim Robbins, and all the other censorship victims will have to say about the plight of Bob Ryan.

This Is Not Censorship

Before the usual suspects get all atwitter about fascism in the United States, this is NOT censorship:

Country station KKCS has suspended two disc jockeys for playing the Dixie Chicks, violating a ban imposed after the group criticized President Bush.

Their boss told them not to do something, they did it anyway, they were suspended. The end.

Now Can I say Mean Things About The French?

More food for “But France is one of our oldest allies” crowd:

The French government secretly supplied fleeing Iraqi officials with passports in Syria that allowed them to escape to Europe, The Washington Times has learned. Top Stories

An unknown number of Iraqis who worked for Saddam Hussein’s government were given passports by French officials in Syria, U.S. intelligence officials said.

This about sums it up:

A second Bush administration official said, “It’s like Raoul Wallenberg in reverse,” a reference to the Swedish diplomat who supplied travel documents to help Jews escape Nazi Germany in World War II. “Now you have the French helping the bad guys escape from us.”

This post is in: General Stupidity

Gauging by people’s responses, people do not understand my position on the issue, so I am going to try one more time.

I could not care less if Bill Bennett gambles. At all. I also don’t care what he puts in his mouth, whether it is a penis or a joint or a double cheeseburger with extra cheese and double the mayo. I don’t care if he gets divorced or has an affair. I don’t care if he tells white lies so that his wife feels good about herself. I don’t care if he ever steps into a church. I don’t care what he does in his spare time, as long as it is not hurting someone else. And I most certainly am not running around in positions of power attempting to criminalize what he does in his past time, while pretending to be a pristine man of virtue.

In essence, I am willing to let Bill Bennett decide what is best for Bill Bennett. Why isn’t he decent enough to allow me to decide what is best for John Cole?

The answer, of course, is because he is a loud-mouthed moralizer who thinks he knows what is best for everyone, and he wants to put his idea into practice with the force and backing of the federal and state governments. I understand that I am just a loudmouth.
