Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Groan

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

I probably shouldn’t comment on this post, since Yglesias is actually complimenting the administration (sort of), but within this post sre some rather illuminating bist which may explain some of Matt’s eternal pessimism and constant nay-saying:

I learned yesterday afternoon that there’s a project underway in the US government to write securities laws for the new Baghdad stock exchange. In light of what’s taking place on the ground in Iraq, this sounds a bit like a bad joke, but it really is an example of the sort of nuts and bolts nation-building that I (and others) have been criticizing the administration for not paying enough attention to, so I was glad to hear it. Of course we’ve learned lately that our own securities laws aren’t so hot, but maybe we’ll do better for Iraq.

A perfect illustration of just exactly what makes me mental when I see all of these mindless criticisms of the current coalition. This, btw, is exactly what supporters of this administration are talking about when we claim that the coalition is not being given credit for all the good things they are doing in Iraq. It isn’t because we want to gloss over the difficulties, and it isn’t because we have reached Goldbergian levels of media paranoia, but because we know that a lot of people are mounting endless, ridiculous attacks about the situation in Iraq based on one-sided (lopsided) reports and a lack of information.

Matt just learned this ‘yesterday,’ but how long has this been going on? Is this effort to rebuild the stock exchange over two months old? If it is, I guess it is just part of the plan to rebuild Iraq that Yglesias and others have been screaming was non-exsistent? How can Matt make the comment ‘In light of what’s taking place on the ground in Iraq’ when it is clear there may be a helluva lot going on in Iraq that he just hasn’t ‘learned’ about yet? I guess it is understa=ndable to think that everything in Iraqis a failure when your main sources of news are Josh Marshall and the NY Times.

More Bad news for Democratic Candidates

by John Cole|  December 1, 20037:28 pm| 3 Comments

This post is in: Politics

More good economic news today:

Stocks surged to 18-month highs, but bonds slumped on Monday as news of the fastest pickup in U.S. factory activity in 20 years reinforced prospects for a sustained U.S. economic rebound.

Gold prices closed above $400 an ounce for the first time in almost eight years as the dollar remained weak, making the safe-haven metal more affordable to big investors overseas.

In contrast, oil futures ended just below $30 a barrel, on expectations that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will leave production levels unchanged when oil ministers meet on Thursday in Vienna.

More here:

An unexpected leap in U.S. manufacturing in November suggests economic growth won’t slow as much in the fourth quarter as some analysts expected, as business activity picks up some of the slack from consumer spending.

After the Institute for Supply Management reported its best reading on factory activity in two decades and the first positive reading on employment in 37 months, economists speculated manufacturing jobs in the monthly payrolls data could turn positive as early as the November report due out this Friday.

“We may finally see jobs starting to play a role in this recovery. We can certainly count on 200,000 or so a month for next several months, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be stronger than that,” said FTN Financial chief economist Christopher Low.

I expect the Democratic attacks on Iraq to reach a fevered pitch. After all, their two legged platform of disparaging the economy and preaching doom and gloom in Iraq is now a one legged monolith, leaving the Democrats talking and walking in circles. But hey- the frontrunner has Jimmy Carter’s ear!

Connect The Dots

by John Cole|  December 1, 20037:23 pm| 13 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

After 9/11, the money phrase around Washington was that all of our intelligence services ‘failed to connect the dots.’ IN that spirit, I would like to do some dot-connecting for you.

On Sunday, Drudge reported that Howard Dean was using Jimmy Carter as a consultant, going to him for information and advice.

Later that day, Dean had the following to say:

Howard Dean launched a full-throated attack on President Bush’s foreign policy acumen Sunday, saying Bush has “no understanding of defense,” is conducting diplomacy by “petulance” and lacks “the backbone to stand up against the Saudis.”

Amid a crush of well wishers seeking autographs at a high school here, Dean said of Bush: “I think he’s made us weaker. He doesn’t understand what it takes to defend this country, that you have to have high moral purpose. He doesn’t understand that you better keep troop morale high rather than just flying over for Thanksgiving,” as Bush did in visiting Baghdad.

Today, Bob Dole stated:

“I thank God F.D.R. was my commander in chief in WWII. Had it been Howard Dean we would have not participated. This would have saved lives and none of us would have been wounded. Just one little problem: we would have lost our liberty and freedom.”

Matt Stinson has more.

New Self-Help Group Announcement

by John Cole|  November 30, 20038:56 pm| 31 Comments

This post is in: Sports

As a public service to my readers and the blogospehere community, I am announcing the formation of a new self-help group. The group is called:

“My NFL team sucks and is making me miserable, but I love them anyway.”

Invitations are open to anyone afflicted*, but I would like to officially send invitations to the following people:

Oliver Willis, whose Redskins are 4-8.

Matt Stinson and Tacitus, whose Bucs are 5-6.

Kevin Holtsberry, who, like me, is a fan of the pathetic and puny Steelers (4-8).

Dodd Harris and William Sulik, both long-suffering Raiders fans.

Others may feel free to list their name and team affiliation below in the comments. I can’t promise this will help, but I guess it is nice to know you are not suffering alone.

* Arizona Cardinals fans will be given complete lifetime membership without any questions asked.

*** Update ***

I doubt even this would help my Steelers.

The Sick Mindset of the Welfare State

by John Cole|  November 30, 20037:08 pm| 27 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

Maybe Republicans, after passing this obscene Prescription Drug Vote Buying Scheme, will begin to understand that they were right all along about the Welfare state. Buying votes through permanent entitlements is a really shitty idea, and it is not helpful for anyone. Check out the sick state of mind as presented in the NY Times:

But Ernest D. DeBlasis, 73, echoed the view of many when he said the new coverage “amounts to peanuts.”

“It’s not going to help me,” said Mr. DeBlasis, who spends half the year here and half in Marlboro, N.J., where he was an architect. “Let’s hope Congress revises this thing before it takes effect in 2006…”

Joseph S. Shapiro, 89, out for his morning stroll on the boardwalk, said: “People have to pray that they get very ill. If you are in semi-bad shape, you get very little or nothing from the new Medicare bill..”

Of the new drug benefit, Mr. Forzese said: “I don’t expect to get much out of it. I don’t think it will help unless I really get sick and need a lot of medicines.”

The Greatest Generation speaks- they want a free ride.

4,946 to Go

by John Cole|  November 30, 20037:00 pm| 10 Comments

This post is in: War

From Reuters (via Drudge):

U.S. soldiers killed 46 Iraqis and captured eight trying to carry out a series of attempted ambushes on U.S. convoys in the central Iraqi city of Samarra on Sunday, a U.S. military spokesman said.
“The fourth infantry division repelled multiple ambush attacks,” Lieutenant Colonel William MacDonald told reporters.

At least 18 attackers, five U.S. soldiers and a civilian traveling with the troops were wounded during the ambushes.

“The attacks were coordinated in locations very close to each other,” he said, adding that the ambushes were made on separate U.S. convoys using mortars, grenades and small arms fire. Three buildings, from whose roofs the attackers fired, were destroyed.

“The attackers attempted to block one of the convoy’s way with a makeshift barricade,” MacDonald said, citing three main attack points around Samarra, north of Baghdad.

“In all of the clashes coalition firepower overwhelmed the attackers resulting in significant enemy losses,” he said. “If you attempt to attack one of our convoys we’re going to use our firepower to stop that attack.”

Some of the attackers wore the attire of Fedayeen, a militia formed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein before U.S.-led forces toppled him earlier this year.

Quagmire.
