Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

In my day, never was longer.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

He really is that stupid.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“Alexa, change the president.”

No one could have predicted…

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Here We Go Again

by John Cole|  April 27, 20045:40 pm| Leave a Comment

This post is in: Politics

It has been about a month, so it is time for another Democrat blogger to take another stab at the “Really we are moderates but Bush is so extreme that we just sound like hostile lunatics.” This time, it is Ezra’s turn:

The problem is, moderate no longer relies on your politics, it rests on your tone. Despite my policy credentials, John Cole recently termed me “the first violin of the I-hate-Bush orchestra”, a banner rarely affixed to the ideologically androgynous. Politics now is more a team sport than a contest of ideas. Whether or not we like what our manager is doing, the very fact that he’s on our team makes him saintly in comparison to the demon-idiots across the field. So atrocious, and so strangely heedless, are the Bush Administration’s actions that our denunciations of them are far louder than our politics would predict, rivaling those of the far-left for ferocity and frequency.

And the band played on…

A Kerry Tidbit From the Past

Here is a John Kerry quote that appeared in the Bethany College Student newspaper, the Tower, in 1971:

John Kerry, the presumed Democratic nominee for president, was quoted by a student newspaper at West Virginia’s Bethany College in 1971 as saying, “Our democracy is a farce; it is not the best in the world.”

Kerry made the remarks on Nov. 2, 1971, according to the Bethany College student newspaper, The Tower . CNSNews.com has obtained a copy of the article written by John Majors, which details Kerry’s visit to the college and appeared in the Nov. 11, 1971 issue of the newspaper. At the time, Kerry was still a leader of the anti-war group, Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW).

“There is a disbelief in the American Dream,” Kerry was quoted as saying. “People are questioning if it is really a dream or if the dream still exists,” Kerry reportedly told the students gathered in the school’s Weimer Lecture Hall.

Hey Terry McAuliffe- why is John Kerry questioning John Kerry’s patriotism?

BTW- Bethany College is located in Bethany, WV, and is my hometown. It has a population of about 400, which swells to about 1200 when school is in session. My mother has taught English there for over 30 years, and I attended the school for a year. Actually, saying I attended Bethany College is a bit of a stretch, considering my abysmal academic record. Let’s say I lived in the Freshman dorm, worked at the radio station, pledged a fraternity, and played lacrosse there.

The nephew of my good friend and neighbor from my hometown, Bethany, WV, was killed in action in Iraq:

smith.jpg

Michael J. Smith Sr., the grieving father of a local man killed in Iraq, spoke Monday about his son’s wish to wear a police uniform but who first chose a uniform of a soldier. Marine Lance Cpl. Michael J. Smith Jr., a 21-year-old serviceman and a Wellsburg native, was killed in a skirmish in Iraq last week during his second tour of duty in that country.
The elder Smith agreed to speak to local media about his loss at the Wellsburg Detachment of the West Virginia State Police. He was accompanied by State Police Sgt. Dave Robinson and Marine Capt. Jeremy Dempsey and 1st Sgt. Scott Seese, the two who had delivered news of Smith’s death to his family.

The elder Smith said growing up, his son liked all policemen-the state troopers, the deputies and the city policemen. He looked up to all of them. A former state trooper of 21 years, Smith admitted to being an influence as well.

Smith said his son enlisted in the Marines soon after his graduation from Brooke High School in 2001 because, “he wanted to be a state trooper, and he felt that when he got out, that would give him the best chance at doing that.”

An Air Force veteran, Smith said the Marines weren’t the first branch he would have chosen for his son. “I kind of shook my head and said, excuse me?” Smith said. “I tried to tell him go into the Air Force, but in his mind, it (the Marine Corps) was a better stepping stone to what he wanted to do.”

Holding a red ballcap bearing the letters “USMC” in gold on the front and the words “Proud dad” on the side, Smith said he’s proud of his son’s service to his country.

Military personnel have said Michael J. Smith Jr. died while attempting to help a sergeant in his regiment while under enemy attack in Iraq. He was one of four reported killed near the country’s border with Syria.

According to my mother, he was shot while jumping on top of his wounded Sgt. to protect him. Such a shame.

Terry Strikes Back

by John Cole|  April 27, 20044:09 pm| 10 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

In this post below, I begged Democrats to stop whining and to start engaging in honest debate, and the typical response from those on the left was akin to this comment:

“Gosh, John, you’re right; it’s all over. We should just vote for Nader, stop our bitchin’ and moanin’, and manfully handle this devastating insight into our candidate’s honesty, decision-making & voting record.”

Not at all. Just have your candidate stop lying and have him actually defend his record. Every time Kerry is asked a question about his record, he avoids any response and immediately launches into a salvo about how bad Bush is. The Gibson interview was a prime example- every time he was asked a question, he tap-danced for a moment and tried to bring up Bush’s Vietnam record.

Another thing- can you guys officially stop overlooking everything said by that walking, talking, piece of bile that you call the DNC Chairman? After his laughable cries to have the ‘Republican attack dogs’ called off yesterday, McAuliffe dove back into the DNC cesspool and started trying to spread this vile new meme:

Democrats began a weeklong attack on Vice President Dick Cheney’s record yesterday, with party chief Terry McAuliffe calling him “the last guy who should be lecturing John Kerry” and a Democrat-leaning group suggesting that Mr. Cheney’s wife became pregnant to help her husband avoid serving in Vietnam…

Mr. McAuliffe then questioned Mr. Cheney’s personal qualifications.

“You remember Dick Cheney,” he said. “When John Kerry was risking his life for his country in Vietnam, Dick Cheney was getting deferments because, in his words, he had ‘other priorities than military service.’ “

Let’s just make sure we have the facts straight. When the Republicans mention the effects of Kerry’s no vote on a military spending bill, they are ‘questioning his patriotism.’ When Democrats claim that Cheney knocked up his wife in order to avoid Viet Nam, it is substantive debate.

I am sick of the way Democrats and the left get a free pass. Rush Limbaugh says something about Chelsea Clinton looking like a dog and every Republican in the world is tarred with guilt by association. The SELECTED AND ELECTED leader of the DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE runs around making comments like this and worse, ad no one cares.

Hanks has more info on this latest trip to the sewer by the Democrats.

If The Shoe Fits

Kevin Drum, always working hard to advance memes that villify the right wing with guilt by association, posts this picture:

Blog_God_Hates_You.jpg

Kevin then notes:

Earlier today I said that although we liberals should be more accomodating toward religion, it was still perfectly OK to blast away at folks who use religion as a thin cover for “their own little liberal-hate cults.” Well, this is the guy I was talking about. Feel free to spare no invective against cretins like this. Better yet, demand that if conservatives don’t loudly denounce him then they obviously support what he’s saying.

Sure. He is a scumbag, and I bet the overwhelming majority of Republicans have no time or patience for him or his ilk. Now here is one for you:

mwl01.jpg

The difference, of course, is that this represents the mainstream thought processes of the Democratic party. Bush is Hitler, Ahscroft should have been aborted.

You would think that a member of the party that routinely embracing the rhetoric and behavior of the ANSWER crowd would know better than to engage in these childish polemics, but, I guess not. Oh, and btw – here is what one of the elected representatives of the Democratic Party had to say:

At a pre-march rally on Saturday night at the D.C. Armory by RFK Stadium, California congresswoman Maxine Waters told George W. Bush to “go to hell.” Going to hell with him, said Waters, should be John Ashcroft, Don Rumsfeld, and Condi Rice. In a brief, non-impromptu speech, that’s what a member of the United States Congress chose to say. (You’ll be amused

Quit your damned whining. If John Kerry claims his patriotism has been questioned one more time, I am going to lose it. And like the DNC pet that he is- Oliver laps it up every time.

The Republican comments and commercials about Kerry that are starting this week are not questioning his patriotism. They are questioning his honesty, his willingness to make the right choices, and they are highlighting his past votes. And that is fair game, and you guys need to quit whining.

I find it absurd that Terry McAuliffe can even make statements like this with a straight face:

“George Bush has sent Dick Cheney to kick off a misleading ad campaign attacking John Kerry’s commitments to defending America. And Dick Cheney is still able to stand by with a straight face and watch these attacks unfold,” McAuliffe said during a news conference.

“It’s time for Dick Cheney to call off the Republican attack dogs. The American people have better things to do with their time than listen to more misleading attacks from a man who has been misleading them from the day he took office,” McAuliffe said.

Hehe. Do I have to start putting up vile anti-Bush McAwful quotes, or can I trust you to google for yourself?

Quit defending Kerry over the medal flap. He has lied repeatedly about the issue, and no amount of righteous indignation, absurd outbursts, and silly attacks on President Bush can take back the lies.

When are these pols going to learn they can’t get away with it anymore?

At any rate, I find it rich that Kerry’s only defense of his repeated lying is a transparent and lame attack on Bush:

I mean, this is a controversy that the republicans are pushing. The Republicans have spent $60 million in the last few weeks trying to attack me. And this comes from a president and a Republican party that can’t even answer whether or not he showed up for duty in the national guard. I’m not going to stand for it.

Good- you shouldn’t stand for it- you should sit there and STFU and hope the situation blows over as soon as possible, because you are caught in a lie. And, btw, so much for not wanting to discuss Bush’s military service (didn’t Kerry get the notes that there is no there there?)- I guess we will just call that flip-flop number 2000.

At any rate, Kerry needs to be careful- he actually challenged Charlie Gibson to ‘go back and get the file footage,’ something I am very in favor of. I would like to have a video of Kerry throwing military medals away shown over and over and over again, every night on the news, all the way up to the election.
