Best Line from the SOTU

by John Cole|  January 20, 200410:20 pm| 33 Comments

This post is in: Politics

The line of the night from the SOTU (which Pelosi must have missed as she just repeated the ‘unilateral’ lie), was the following:

Some critics have said our duties in Iraq must be internationalized. This particular criticism is hard to explain to our partners in Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, the Netherlands, Norway, El Salvador, and the 17 other countries that have committed troops to Iraq. As we debate at home, we must never ignore the vital contributions of our international partners, or dismiss their sacrifices. From the beginning, America has sought international support for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and we have gained much support. There is a difference, however, between leading a coalition of many nations, and submitting to the objections of a few. America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people.

I stood up and cheered.

BTW- The Pelosi response is hilarious.

Harry has some thoughts.

From the SOTU:

“The terrorists declared war on the United States… and war is what they got.”

You can almost hear the collective mind explosion at the Democratic Underground.

When Will They Learn?

by John Cole|  January 20, 20049:23 pm| 5 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

Every year, during the SOTU address, the cameras zoom in on some member of the opposition party who looks like they are about to explode with rage. Last year, it was Hillary. This year, it was Teddy Kennedy. In years past, Republicans have done the same damn thing when Clinton was speaking, so don’t think this is some sort of partisan pot-shot. Don’t these people realize how awful this looks on camera?

BTW- Vodkapundit is SOTU-blogging live.

Dean’s Scream

I simply don’t know what to make of that scream Dean made last night at his rally in Iowa. I already thought the man was nuts, but I have to confess that I have never before heard an adult make a sound quite like that.

I am not going to make too much of it, but it was just weird.

Rarely am I deeply upset by the death of a journalist, but I loved Jerry Nachman, who just passed away.

RIP, Mr. Nachman. You were a class act.

What An A$$hole

by John Cole|  January 20, 20043:22 pm| 19 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

If there was ever any idea that General Wesley Clark was one of the cadre of officers that David Hackworth calls the “Perfumed Princes,” check out his comments regarding John Kerry:

Clark, who didn’t compete in Iowa, told campaign workers in Manchester, N.H., that Kerry, a decorated former Navy officer, had a military background “but nobody in this race has got the kind of background I’ve got.”

“It’s one thing to be a hero as a junior officer. He’s done that, I respect that,” Clark said. “But I’ve got the military experience at the top as well as at the bottom.”

What an asshole. John Kerry, despite his politics, is a bona fide military hero. Period. End of story. Here is a brief recounting of his valor in VietNam:

In Vietnam, Lt. Kerry served as captain of a “patrol craft fast,” or “PCF.” These fast river crafts were the inland equivalent to the famous “PT.” vessels of World War II–another parallel to the biography of John F. Kennedy. During his time in Vietnam, Kerry would demonstrate genuine heroism and courage under fire, once driving his ship directly into an ambush gunnery. His bravery earned him a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. In 1969, Kerry reversed the course of his ship under fire and retrieved a wounded sailor from the water, receiving the Bronze Star for his actions, as well as his third Purple Heart. In addition, he earned a ticket home.

This last incident would generate considerable attention for Kerry when the man he retrieved from the river, retired Los Angeles police officer Jim Rassmann, made a surprise appearance at a Des Moines rally just two days before the caucuses.

I may not like a lot of Kerry’s politics, but I find Clark’s comments deeply offensive.

Iowa Caucus Winners

by John Cole|  January 20, 20043:11 pm| 6 Comments

I have not been writing much about the Iowa Caucus, so here goes a little blurb to let you know what I think about the results.

Even though Kerry won on paper, to me the big winners were Edwards, Gephart, and the Democrats in general.

Edwards came off in his speech as positive, confident decent, and with a coherent message, and I think he has a chance in the south (where Kerry has no shot in hell).

I think Gephart is a winner, because he is clearly too decent a man to have to put up with all these other clowns. His speech exuded class.

The Democrats as a whole win, because the crackpot, wingnut left was bitchslapped back into place with the performance of Dean, Kucinich, and the other idiots.
