Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

T R E 4 5 O N

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Stand up, dammit!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

NFL Blogging

by John Cole|  February 9, 20059:21 am| 20 Comments

This post is in: Sports

Oliver Willis and the Poor Man are having a little tiff over whether the ’04-’05 Patriots are the best team ever, and they compare the Patriots to the following teams:

1. The 1985 Bears
2. 1972 Dolphins
3. 1962 Packers
4. 1991 Redskins
5. 1999 Rams
6. 1989 49ers

Notice anything missing- like, say, the Steelers of the 1970’s, who won 4 Super Bowls over a seven year period? Remember them- the team that defined DYNASTY? You have heard of the Steel Curtain, haven’t you?

What do these names have in common: Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Mel BLount, Mike Webster, and Franco Harris? Why, they are all members of the Hall of Fame. Throw in Coach Chuck Knoll, and then find any other team that has nine of its members enshrined.

Add to this that anyone who knows anything about the NFL will note that the best of those Steelers teams did not even go to the Superbowl. That isright- the best team the Steelers fielded was the 1976 Steelers, who had the greatest defense in the history of the NFL. Unless you know of another team that was 1-4, won their final 9 games, outscoring their opponents 234-28 with 5 shut-outs.

And that was with a rookie QB, two injured running backs, and after two extended seasons prior (having won the Superbowl those previous two season).

I am not going to denigrate the greatness of the Current incarnation of the Patriots, but any discussion of the ‘greatest teams ever’ that fails to mention the Steelers dynasty teams of the 1970’s just shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Just heard on the Imus show that Ward Churchill, the controversial Ethnic Studies professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Ron Jeremy, aka the “Hedgehog of Love,” were both scheduled to speak at Eastern Washington University this weekend.

Then the EWU Board of Trustees met, came to their senses. and decided that Ward Churchhill was too offensive and controversial to have come to the school. Jeremy’s visit was unchanged.

Rove’s Promotion

by John Cole|  February 8, 20057:51 pm| 10 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Karl Rove has been promoted and there is sure to be a firestorm among Democrats before they get their talking points coordinated. Terry McAwful takes the first shot:

Karl Rove, the senior political strategist who orchestrated President Bush’s re-election campaign, has been promoted to deputy chief of staff, a job that will involve him in most White House policy and not just politics.

Rove will retain his title as senior adviser and will continue to oversee strategy to advance the president’s agenda. In addition, he will continue to oversee the offices of intergovernmental affairs, political affairs and strategic initiatives.

But he will add to his portfolio the oversight of all White House policy development and coordination of the Domestic Policy Council, the National Economic Council, the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

The promotion has rankled a few Democrats.

“Empowering Rove in this way shows that Bush cares more about political positioning than honest policy discussions,” said Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic National Committee. “ush knows that Rove is neither an economic nor a national security expert. He is simply an ideological strategist. … Clearly, Bush thinks political manipulation matters more than keeping the president honestly informed about the state of the country.”

But I thought Rove already ran everything? He is, after all, Bush’s Brain. Honesty and message consistency are not the DNC’s nor the Chairman’s strong suit.

I suspect by tomorrow cooler heads will prevail, and the mainstream media will start advancing the notion that this promotion means that Bush feels his domestic agenda is in trouble.

The Longest Fifteen Minutes Ever

It is time for everyone to start ignoring Jose Canseco.

As far as I am concerned, Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, and Mark Mcgwire could have used steroids every day and their sins would pale in comparison to Jose Canseco.

Steroids weren’t banned by baseball, and you don’t rat out your teammates.

Dana Milbank

Dana Milbank’s numerous attempts to pass off his partisan opinions as hard news have been well documented here, so it is hard to find anything he says or does surprising. Last night, however, he hit paydirt on Hardball while discussing the moving Anheuser-Busch tribute to our soldiers:

MATTHEWS: …Is it possible to distinguish between an ad to sell beer and a company that has ads trying to actually to salute the country in its missions?

MILBANK: Well, that

Ray

I saw Ray last night, and from the moment he appeared in the film Jamie Foxx was Ray Charles.

I have never seen a movie about a real person where the actor played the part so realistically that I felt I was actually watching the real personk.

Simply amazing.
