Some thirteen miners are trapped after a mine explosion about 60 miles down the road:
An explosion at a coal mine trapped 13 miners more than a mile underground, a county emergency official said Monday.
The explosion happened about 8 a.m. at the Sago Mine in Upshur County, said Steve Milligan, deputy director of the county’s Office of Emergency Management. Six miners made it out of the mine and refused treatment.
The trapped miners’ condition was not immediately known as an attempt by coworkers to reach them was unsuccessful, Milligan said.
“They essentially came to a wall,” Milligan said. “So they can’t get to them at this time.” The miners were one to two miles underground, he said.
I hope we get them out ok.

I hope so too…Nova Scotia has had its share of coal mining disasters too, and my thoughts are with those poor buggers and their families.

This has got to be one of the scariest jobs ever invented.
My heart goes out to these guys, and I hope they are able to reach them.

Same here….fingers crossed.

I don’t think I could handle a tour of a coal mine, never mind go down there for my job. That is crazy. Scariest job indeed.
My dad was a firefighter, and that along with coal miner and deep sea fishing always seemed to be in a rotation for “Most Dangerous Job.” It’s never a competition for me which is most shit-your-pants scary. I could easily picture doing the other two jobs, but a coal mine? Never.
Hope they get ’em out, and get ’em out fast.

An added unpleasantness is this all the news will be blathering about for days. It sucks for the miners and their families, but the entire country does not need 15-minute updates on the situation.

My husband is from this town and is a mining engineer. As someone who can’t be there and knows folks there, the 15 minute updates are our quickest source of updates (friends and family are busy helping). However, the “updates” of no information are upsetting.
I hope they get these guys out safely.
