Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

This really is a full service blog.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

I really should read my own blog.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

The willow is too close to the house.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

People are complicated. Love is not.

T R E 4 5 O N

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Giving up is unforgivable.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Everybody saw this coming.

Now featured at a Team Sarah member page, a photostream featuring this charming picture:

This is, no doubt, nutpicking, and you can not blame this on the McCain/Palin campaign, but it does give you an idea how many in the Republican base think and what we are going to have to deal with for the next four years if Obama wins.

Four years? Fuck that. Eight years. And we should go ahead and start preparing to crush these people into a fine powder which we will then bake into bread and wash down with the sweet, sweet tears we collect on November 5th.

There’s a Johnny Cash song for every situation!

A little shoeshine boy never gets low down
But he’s got the dirtiest job in town
    Bendin’ low at Sarah’s feet
On the windy corner of the dirty street
Well, I asked him while he shined her shoes
How’d he keep from gettin’ the blues
He grinned as he raised his little head
Popped a shoeshine rag and then he said

Get revenge when the country turns blue
Come on, get revenge when the country turns blue
A little revenge makes you feel so fine
It’ll shake all the trouble from your worried mind
Get revenge when the country turns blue

We have to remember that the wingnuts are essentially handing us the weapons to use against them. All we have to do is use them properly

Rush Limbaugh’s recent statements pretty much destroy any African-American outreach for Republicans. Palin has driven away a lot of women.

Stay classy, stay smart, and let them hand us victories.

This was sent to me a couple of weeks ago via email, over the office email system, which, as we employees were reminded last week, is not to be used to circulate anything other than company business.

Makes the proposed plan to send the "New Obama National Flag" viral email campaign sound like fun, doesn’t it?

I’m so tired of the blatant racist bullshit.
Tom Degan wrote a very good "rant" over at his blog, Tom Degan’s "The Rant", that deals with this craziness,

Have any of you seen this Batman Vs. The Penguin Debate (I saw this on TPM, so someone may have noticed it already): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l63SRpGXBHE

What’s most hilarious about the site hosting that shoe-shine picture is that the sole blog entry consists of whining about the photos Palin opponents have posted on their flickr streams.

    The rant concludes:
"Do you see this stuff reported in MSM??? No, hardly at all. However,
the racism claim agaisnt McCain/Palin is front page news every
    day."

Gee. I wonder what photos could possibly suggest that Palin and/or her supporters are motivated by racism?

My wife, a clinical psychologist, occasionally has to remind me that an IQ of 100 is the AVERAGE. This IQ is really, starkly noticeable, even during a short conversation. But most of us probably haven’t had much personal experience with this level of intelligence. As a result, we’re shocked when we encounter people with below-average cognitive abilities.

There are a lot of them out there. I suspect that "Team Sarah" captures more than a few of this demographic.

I sometimes nod over the Corner cos John lists it as a House of Krazy and I like to see what the right-wing meltdown looks like.

One of the things that amazes me is their belief that they somehow inherently speak for "average Americans" and "Walmart shoppers" etc. … It’s very amusing. Have any of these mammary-slurping rightist ideologues ever lived in a small town? Belonged to a neighborhood parish? Worked for a moving company or roofing outfit or McDonalds? They are all to a man and woman bought and paid for by think tanks and media houses that market their closed-loop froth like so many collateralized debt obligations. Their meltdown mirrors the collapse of the financial system — an ideology built on false precepts and run through incoherent econometric models and coming up bankrupt.

Think how truly amazing it is that a black guy with minor experience in government whose name rhymes with that of the world’s worst terrorist is even ahead at all … it’s a testament to just how much they suck.

PS: My wife and I are from Toledo. Her parents are Limbaugh-ites. We disagree on a lot of things but they know what they are talking about. They too are really insulted by this Palin woman.

My wife and I are from Toledo. Her parents are Limbaugh-ites. We disagree on a lot of things but they know what they are talking about.

Consider yourself fortunate. Of all of the right-wingers I know, not a single one is anywhere approaching ‘well-informed’. In fact to a person they are all ignorant, knowing only what Faux Noise tells them to think.

It makes it exceedingly difficult to have any kind of discussion about politics because I always end up having these very basic-level discussions with them where I try to correct their misconceptions, like how the mortgage crisis was not caused by Chris Dodd and Barney Fag and Bill Clinton forcing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to loan money to poor black people.

Even worse, they resist these attempts at remedial education like particularly stubborn children. It’s like I want to discuss astronomy with someone who insists the earth is flat and refuses to believe that it’s not.

As a result, I usually end up refusing to discuss politics at all with these folks because it’s an exercise in frustration. It’s probably also not very productive to call them idiots, like I often feel like doing.

The 1984 election comes to mind. Low voter turnout favors Republicans, so if you want the Republicans to win, be sure to stay home on election day.

I used to have a boss who got all his news from talk radio. This was in 2005 and he starts telling me about how we weren’t going to have electricity soon. Why?

Because the democrats had outlawed nuclear power, all the power plants were going to have to shut down next year. I said I hadn’t heard about that. He asked me how much of the electricity in the U.S. came from nuclear. I guessed 15% (the answer is 20%). He gave out a big "hah". "90%", he told me, "90%, how are we going to replace that?!".

    "I dunno", I said.

    October 19, 2008 at 2:35 pm

TeamSarah.org was invaded, last week, by a number of, well, cretins seems like the apt word. They infiltrated — spreading the N word, the F word, the C word, and a lot of other intentionally vile content, posing as site members until banned. It was shocking.

Thereafter, a new and more virulent attack, a coordinated effort originating at

    http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=7495801&mesg_id=7498189

launched with a "dirty tricks" operation which its operatives found rather hilarious.

The evidence points to the photo you here post as being one of their efforts to slur TeamSarah.org by planting horrid content. Anything that violates TeamSarah’s ethos of "common courtesy, common decency, common sense" — values we hold in common with Governor Palin — and most assuredly anything smacking of bigotry, whether racist or sexist — is taken down instantly when flagged or discovered.

We of the Republican base are familiar, as you can well imagine, with ridicule, as posted by folks like GapingHeadwound at Kos, or, well … here at balloon-juice. We find vilification tedious, cheap and beneath your dignity. But such speech discredits only the speaker.

That said, dirty tricks are indecent conduct and beyond the pale.

By publicizing this photo and attributing it to the Republican base you were gulled into perpetrating an act of active sabotage of the TeamSarah.org community by the worst elements on your side — your brownshirts, in my personal opinion — who set out to use vile language and imagery to intimidate those with whom they disagree from the exercise of their precious rights of free speech and free assembly.

So, with this post you too were victimized by their dirty tricks. Now you know. And it’s up to you what, if anything, to do about it.

DemocraticUnderground is on record as determined to turn the concept of conservative "radioactive." So this kind of thing emanating from there comes as no great surprise. That said, the actions launched from there were so heinous that they caused the site moderator, rasputin1952, to lock the thread. To his credit … although not so much to his credit that he implied a willingness to foster dirty tricks against yet another site. Bad show.

Now… where will balloon-juice stand? Silent?

Damage was done. The site now requires visitors to register and be approved before being admitted. Quite burdensome.

It, however, has not slowed TeamSarah.org’s growth.

    To the contrary.

If you value your credibility (and any authentic claim to commitment to the Bill of Rights), please apologize to your readers, expose the invasion, and censure the invaders. In other words — show decency.

Whether or not you are willing to take a stand against some terribly dirty tricks performed by the worst elements among you, kindly let the record show that TeamSarah.org does not tolerate gestures of bigotry and conducts itself with high standards of dignity and taste.
