Election Live Blog #2

This post is in: Election 2008

FacebookTweetEmail

Moving up here, because Tim and Michael want to change the way we liveblog. New posts will be at the top.

9:43 pm (John)- Ohio throws that idiot Joe the Plumber under the god damned bus. I hope they back up over him. This is over.

9:22: Mitch Mconnell wins. Ugh. (MD) But as I said earlier, I am not disappointed by that. I am not a McCoonnell fan. I am also not a shitty campaign tactic fan.

***

9:18 pm (Tim) – Here comes the fork. FOX calls Ohio for Obama.

9:04 pm (John)- Although the state and local races are really more important to the average voter, and then after that the US House and Senate races, it really is irritating me right now when they spend time covering the House and Senate races. Obama and McCain is all I care about.

9:01 pm: FOX briefly calls Ohio for Obama, then takes it back. Stop toying with me.

8:56 pm (Tim) Mark Steyn at the Corner:

I find that Keystone calling a bit premature given that a grand total of no precincts had reported. On the other hand, in good news for the GOP, CNN just put up a graphic showing Susan Collins with 100% of the vote and her challenger with 0%.

I can say without exaggeration that I have better election commentary in my pants.

8:54 pm (John) – I say again, this is taking too damned long.

8:39 pm (Tim) – Obama is -10 in KY with 50% reporting. It will be a sign if he kicks Kerry’s ass that isn’t known for racial harmony.

8:34 pm (Tim) – Watching FOX now. I have a champagne bottle of my sublime Baracktoberfest stout reserved for the moment that Brit Hume calls it for the Unity Pony.

8:33 pm (John)- Alabama goes to Johnny and the plumbers.

8:27 pm (John)- According to the GOS, Hagan, Warner, and Shaheen all won, so that is Blue +3, and Liddy Dole can spend the next few months helping Bob use up the complimentary viagra left over from 1996. +I Lost Count (although I think 7 is a safe guestimate)

8:20 pm (John)- Mom just called, and apparently one of the networks called WV for McCain, which should surprise approximately no one.

8:11 pm (John)- Suck it, Trebek. I guess PA went to Obama according to some channels other than CNN. I get only Fox and CNN, so I have to stick with CNN.

8:43: Didn’t see that we had a new Live Blog. We own Pennsylvania, bitches! (MD)

8:46: According to CNN, 102:34. Awesome. I am openly taunting my partner. I don’t know what he is fucking thinking. (MD)

8:53: Buh bye Liddy! Good riddance! (MD)

And yeah, NBC is projecting PA for Obama. This is starting to get exciting — you are going to have a seriously giddy (and drunk) readership tonight, methinks.

I just came in. Had NPR on in the car. They were talking about Ohio and had some correspondent at Repub headquarters there (don’t remember what city). She said everything was set up for a big party . . . . BUT . . . nobody was there. She kept going on about, um, "party" politics, and finally suggested they go over to the correspondent at the Dem headquarters to see if things were happier there.

Via MSNBC, in NC 24% of white voters say race was a factor. Of that group, 30% voted Obama.

Judging from how my NC relatives act, I find that damn encouraging for the country.

Too bad you don’t have MSNBC because I for one can not get enough of David Gregory asking Gene Robinson what part race is playing and what would an Obama victory say about our country.

    November 4, 2008 at 8:29 pm

On MSNBC, they were just speaking about those who voted for Obama in NC, even though race was a factor for them.

But from the stories I’ve read, its like those people were so fed up with what’s been happening that they voted for Obama anyway.

I think its good some people are willing to put their bigotry aside for a good common cause.

    It gives one hope.

Geebus, what is wrong with the canvassing board in Palm Beach? MSNBC is discussing the idiocy of their absentee ballot. The voter has to complete an arrow rather than just mark the friggin’ spot next to their candidate. That county is run by morons (or is it morans?).

BTW, White Russians are a great choice for election night. It’s like desert.

Soooo, you’re saying only white guys are voting for McPOW.

Barack Obama was winning handily among women, blacks and Hispanics, while whites supported John McCain, according to preliminary exit polls. Obama also was the overwhelming choice of the one in 10 voters who went to the polls for their first time Tuesday — a racially diverse group of mostly twentysomethings, half of whom call themselves Democrats.

‘Cos, the groups blacks and Hispanics must include men. [Checks] Yeah.

OK, with this in mind I’m going to make my first prediction for one of the top ten fReichtard talking points if Obama wins: "They’re breeding like bunnies and if we don’t do something, America will be overwhelmed by undesirables!11"

The fact is, though, with Obama in line for an electoral-vote blowout, the House and Senate totals become crucial to the entire federal policy picture looking out over the next 2 years (at least). If the Democrats win a filibuster-proof majority in Congress, it’s full speed ahead.

Since it appears Obama has won Ohio, I will be the gracious loser and congratulate all of you on the victory. Of course, I’ll add an important caveat that you can take or leave at your peril: Politics is not a football game. You don’t win the election, pour some Gatorade over the coach’s head and then ride off into the sunset. You’ve won the election but you’re just getting started.

In a perfect storm for Democrats, it looks like you will not achieve "landslide" and you will achieve a marginal 1-2 win in the popular vote. This is despite the most unpopular President since Carter or Nixon as the incumbent, a significant recession that started a month before the election and a media that has literally cheer-led your candidate. I know on the last point you will take issue with but I suggest not taking my word for it and just look at literally ANY independent poll of the media’s bias.

So congratulations, but watch out. George Bush is going back to Crawford. There’s no more albatross hanging around Republican necks. Your Congress has an approval rating in the singles to mid teens. Before, you could still blame Bush and excuse this away. Now you can’t. You OWN all your failures now.

You might hate Joe the Plumber for some ideological reason, but he speaks for millions of people and he speaks for most small businesses throughout America – the small businesses that create most of the new jobs in this country. You’ve also nominated a candidate who has promised to raise taxes and raise protectionist barriers during a recession. That would make him the first President since Hoover to do – I’ll let you consult a history book to see how that worked out.

Call it sour grapes if you’d like, but I’ll congratulate you all again. Just remember, you’re in charge now. No more whining, no more finger pointing. You fuck up, it’s ALL on you now. Good luck, for America’s sake.

If you think, however, that most of us are anything less than acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead, you have grieviously misunderstood and underestimated us.

Progressives have been facing an uphilll battle on multiple levels for years now, and have learned one hell of a lot about the reality that success in politics necessitates reaching out to allies on an issue by issue basis. Obama is supremely pragmatic that way, in case you hadn’t noticed.

Surely you don’t think that we believe we’ll suddenly be dancing in a perfect world under rainbow-hued clouds together as of tomorrow?

And surely you are not so delusional to think that whatever goes wrong after tonight is actually all on us. This happens to be your country, too, unless you are planning on turning your back on her for the next four years. Somehow I doubt that is the case.

Small businesses create many jobs, but also destroy many, as the failure rate for them is so high. Just another Republican pseudo-fact their followers are too lazy to check out.

    Iowa put us to +3.

You might hate Joe the Plumber for some ideological reason, but he speaks for millions of people and he speaks for most small businesses throughout America – the small businesses that create most of the new jobs in this country.

He doesn’t own a small business nor does he have the money to buy or start a small business. He’s unemployed and rebuilding as a community organizer. No, I’m not kidding.

Joe the Plumber is short on cash and unemployed but that’s not stopping him from opening a new charitable foundation and penning a book on American values.

    …

He said he hasn’t figured out how he’s going to finance the charity, but knows how he wants the money to be spent.

"You know there’s a lady on my street that is going to lose her house because of disability. You know … that’s something this charity that I am starting would help, help people directly," he said.

So, he’s going to collect money from other people and distribute it how he wishes, supporting himself along the way. And this doesn’t meet his own completely wrong definition of ‘socialism’ how?

We hated Joe the Plumber because he was and continues to be an absolute fraud. If the GOP wants to win the respect of the other half of us, they need to demonstrate that they respect honesty and the rule of law. That’s all. That’s why we hate Palin and Joe – Joe is a fraud and Palin is a liar and doesn’t understand or respect the law. And McCain is a fraud for foisting these two idiots as representative of small business owners and responsible federal governance.

With the condition they have left the country in, the primaries and general election races will seem like a holiday compared to the work required over the next 4 years, even without their expected antiAmerican sabotage. I love Franken as a comedy writer, and I might learn to like him as a senator, although his big ego is going to need to take some lumps in that old boys club. But damn it is good to see Republican senators sent packing.

It may take a few years for Franken to settle in, but I think he’s going to be a great senator. He understands very well what Paul Wellstone was all about and I think they actually share temperment. Wellstone had an ego too.

Your Congress has an approval rating in the singles to mid teens. Before, you could still blame Bush and excuse this away. Now you can’t. You OWN all your failures now.

Actually, Bush is going back to Dallas. See he can stop playing cowboy now and close up his ranch now that he’s finished the presidency.

as foreign auto manufacturers set up shop in right to work states in the South

And we should seek to emulate the anti-union, right-to-work, low-wage Confederacy how?

Since you apparently didn’t read my post, I’ll make it nice and simple for you. I’m a foreign auto manufacturer, say Toyota or Honda. I can:

    A) Set up an auto plant in Tennessee or Kentucky (or insert red state here) where I can deal with a business friendly climate, right to work laws where if I make my workers happy they’re not required to join a union, and I have a steady stream of hard working…Joes who want to build the cars of tomorrow (like the Prius being built in Indiana now)

    or

    B) Set up an auto plant in Michigan, where all auto plants are expect to be UAW plants, with the associated job banks, pension funds and ridiculous work rules that come along with that – not to mention the fact that all the Democratic politicians are bought and paid for by the unions.

Now putting aside your political blinkers, where would YOU set up a car plant?

If you said NOT Michigan, congratulations. Please claim your prize at the door. Now Michigan is in worse shape than any other state in the nation. And Democrats control Michigan all over the state yet voters there continue to re-elect them (at least the ones that haven’t move out yet). The only ones left are those who still think manufacturers take Michigan seriously when making decisions like auto plants and are waiting around for a job. Please don’t make America like Michigan and pass "card check" legislation.

    Thanks much.

Man, I spent 45 minutes on the phone with my mom on that topic. She bought into the assumption that a permanent address was a requirement for voting. I challenged her on why she thought that assumption was true – why homeless people are undeserving of being part of a democracy.

I walked her back quite a ways. She didn’t realize that felons can vote in many states. She didn’t realize that voter reg forms are required to be submitted in most states, even if it’s clear they are fraudulent, and recognized that was a good thing when I explained it.

And if they don’t straighten out their own house and instead focus on obstructing the peoples will, they will remain politically impotent. Phil has given us the apparent wingnut strategy for regaining power. It is the strategy of focusing on your opponent’s shortcomings, while offering no ideas save those that have failed miserably, and it is doomed to failure. Tonight, America has taken a leap in it’s evolution toward the founders challenge of forming a more perfect union. The country is fiercely focused on the future and any attempts to hold that back will be met with equally fierce defeat at the polls. Phil thinks little has changed and the old GOP recipes for victory are still viable, if only they resist liberal policies a little harder with right wing ideology. He is wrong. The only route for a successful GOP resurgence is honest engagement and an honest debate with realistic conservative alternatives for the new pair-a-dine.

I’d like to see a study that compares which makes you stupider – believing a politician or tipping

Believing a politician is very stupid, but tipping does raise a plethora of questions for me. How and why did this ancient practice start? and how the hell did politicians and evil republicans sell this BS to workers and pocket the difference?

The real question is why America is structured so that waiters and waitresses can sell feel-good services (“you are a generous tipper and a fine man”) to strangers, in return for money. In other words, how did waiters end up as fundraisers …? Most cross-cultural explanations of tipping start with the agency problem between diners and servers (“can you bring my drink now?”), but I believe that is the wrong approach. I view tipping as correlated with effective fundraising in other areas, and Americans as being especially willing to set this additional fundraising arena in motion.

Plus any commentators about the UAW and its effect on the Michigan economy must admit that a sizable load of the downfall of GM, Ford, and Chrysler was their total mind-boggingly stupid management and overwhelming greed. Anyone else would have realized their over-dependence on the SUV/macho truck market and kept some eco-cars in reserve, but noooo, the Big Three were too addicted to the higher profits per vehicle they were getting.

Bashing union demands, the need to keep health services and pension funds funded as Teh Reason may play to the brain-damaged peanut gallery, but whining for 20 years over "having to pay out" consistently predictable payments looks more to the intelligent like a total inability to plan and budget.
