McClellan’s Rehab, Slower Than Expected

by John Cole|  May 28, 20081:11 pm| 135 Comments

This post is in: I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Captain Ed:

Expect all sides to redefine McClellan in order to either boost or reduce his credibility. To the Right, McClellan will have been the worst press secretary of modern times, and to the Left a man of extraordinary ability chased out of his job by Bush’s minions. The truth will be somewhere in the middle. When he left office, most people on both sides considered him a mediocrity at best. His status as favored punching bag for the hard Left can best be captured in the Keith Olbermann farewell McClellan received as he exited in April 2006. It will be particularly amusing to watch this fringe try to rehabilitate McClellan now.

Let’s see that rehabilitation of character that Ed seems to think is going to happen. Firedoglake:

For three years, Scott McClellan stood before the White House press corp and humiliated himself, saying things he knew were probably false or misleading, while pretending that by dissembling for his President he was serving his country. In now confessing his sins and spins, he still clings to the hope of redemption by saying, gosh, they meant well, even if they were all lying about everything.

No rehab there. Let’s try Too Sense:

McClellan has every reason to lie or twist events: making himself a sympathetic character helps him sell books and he wants to minimize the role he played in one of the most flagrant violations of the public trust by the office of the President in history.

Nope, none there either. Let’s try Steve Benen:

One can’t help but wonder, of course, if this is McClellan’s way of trying to save his own skin — as the Bush gang is condemned by history, McClellan doesn’t want to be associated with failure.

Of course, if he’d thought to speak up when it mattered, instead of after the fact, McClellan’s ability to make a difference might have had an effect. Now, it’ll sell books, but it’s a little late in the game.

Nope, no rehab there. Maybe the GOS:

Well, that’s one way to put it. Another might be to say that for three years he willingly distorted and lied about Iraq, about domestic spying, about secret prisons, about torture, and of course, about the White House role in the outing of Valerie Plame. Or he didn’t lie and, as the truth was revealed about these many issues, he chose to stay on and defend Iraq and domestic spying and secret prisons and torture and of course, the people who lied to him about their role in the outing of Valerie Plame. Which is it?

No mercy there, either:

What about the the Rude Pundit:

Hopefully, the book will tank, and McClellan will be reduced to blowing Hannity for nickels. Screw this obsequious pig-fucking son of a bitch, this grubby little man-whore, attempting to purge his soul of the taint and stench of death and sorrow while pulling in a buck or two. He’s not honorable enough to have fallen on his sword, rhetorically or literally. And he’s not even loyal enough to have shut the fuck up (at least an admirable quality in the abstract). He deserves a room in Hell lined with televisions playing his sneering statements of complicity on an endless loop while he’s forced to sit on a couch made of the bloated corpses of Katrina victims. Way too little, way, way too late, you miserable bucket of spooge.

That ain’t rehab in my book.

Even the libertarians are jumping on him:

According to press reports, McClellan says that the Bush administration lied to him about everything, all the time. Which sounds about right, though one gets to wondering either just how clever McClellan is or how dumb he is that it took him so long to figure that out.

No, Captain Ed, the fringe isn’t going to try to “rehab” this dick.

What will be funny is watching Bush sycophants attack him because he has dared to speak ill of W. That will be entertaining.

The Wrong Take

This post is in: Election 2008, I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Clinton Campaign

The AP reports the DNC lawyers have come to a conclusion:

A Democratic Party rules committee has the authority to seat some delegates from Michigan and Florida but not fully restore the two states as Hillary Rodham Clinton wants, according to party lawyers.

Democratic National Committee rules require that the two states lose at least half of their convention delegates for holding elections too early, the party’s legal experts wrote in a 38-page memo.

The memo was sent late Tuesday to the 30 members of the party’s Rules and Bylaws Committee, which plans to meet Saturday at a Washington hotel. The committee is considering ways to include the two important general election battlegrounds at the nominating convention in August, and the staff analysis says seating half the delegates is “as far as it legally can” go.

John Aravosis says that it is time to stop playing games, the Poliblog claims her route to the nomination became more improbable, Jazz Shaw at the Moderate Voice says things are “not looking good” for the Clinton camp, and the Political Machine claims this is a “Clinton Setback.”

And each and every one of them is wrong, because this is precisely the kind of ruling the Clinton camp wants. Seating only half the delegations per DNC rules will provide those in the fantasy land that is the Clinton camp the opportunity to file appeals, turn this into a credential fight, and allow them to fight bitterly all the way to the convention. Rather than ending this, this will assure us we will get more Florida 2000/Zimbabwe/Civil Rights gibberish from team Clinton over the next few months, as the Clinton team prepares to wrestle away the nomination somehow, anyway they can, at the convention. Or hope that “something happens” in between now and then and the supers will abandon Obama.

The only thing that will stop this is if the supers immediately swarm to Obama after the last vote on June 3rd, but I have seen nothing to indicate that will happen- they have indulged Hillary’s bullshit to date, why stop now? And even if they do rush over and put Obama over whatever new number the Clintons dream up, they still will not concede. They will continue campaigning, continue to make statements and raise money and tour the country and take potshots at Obama and suck oxygen out of the room and make her supporters more antagonistic towards Obama until he is officially the nominee at the convention. They don’t care what the outcome is, this is about Hillary becoming President in 2008, and if that fails, in 2012.

And you are fooling yourself if you think anything else will happen, regardless of the result at the Rules Committee on May 31st. This is who the Clintons are, and it would be nice if some of you figured that out sooner rather than too late. Apparently only Rachel Maddow and I have figured this out.

*** Update ***

By the way, I hope I am super awful wrong and she will knock it all off after the June 3rd vote and all you Hillary supporters can come tell me how awful and terrible I am and that I have CDS (without remembering who accused people of BDS and why they did it) and I can go back to my busy schedule of ignoring the Clintons, which kept me very happy and content from 2001-2007.

OMG HE IS LIKE A GAFFE MACHINE

by John Cole|  May 28, 20088:44 am| 97 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing, I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

Apparently, over the week-end, Obama errantly said that is Great Uncle helped to liberate Auschwitz, when he actually liberated Buchenvald:

Obama’s campaign clarified the comments about the candidate’s great-uncle liberating Auschwitz, saying Obama was “mistaken,” and was referring to Buchenwald, not Auschwitz. “Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II – especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald,” said spokesman Bill Burton.

This, of course, sent the fact-checkers in the right wing blogosphere into hyper-drive– “Obama rewrites history” stated one, “Dumber than Bush, Dumber than Quayle,” stated another! It is true- this lack of vetting of great uncle’s stories of their military history is a serious, serious lack of judgment, and who knows what kind of mayhem it could lead to were Obama to become President.

Why, he may not know the difference between Shia and Sunni.

He may actually go to Arizona to celebrate a birthday when New Orleans is flooding.

He may invade the wrong country after terrorists attack us.

Who knows what kind of mayhem this appalling lack of judgment might lead to?

*** Update ***

I really can not tell you how silly these guys look making this line of attack. You really need to click the memorandum link above and check out the reactions. After eight years of fellating the guy who was so dumb his press conferences should have come with a laugh track, they are now really trying to claim Obama is stupid.

The Renzi Connection

by John Cole|  May 28, 20088:30 am| 15 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Politics

Interesting:

Federal agents interviewed staffers for likely Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) as part of their corruption case against Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.).

U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Diane J. Humetewa and fellow prosecutors disclosed the interviews with aides for McCain and fellow Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl in a written response to Renzi’s attorneys, who asked for the contents of the interview to help prepare for Renzi’s upcoming trial, which is scheduled for October.

The aides were interviewed about land exchanges, according to an April letter from Humetewa filed with the U.S. District Court of Arizona late last week. The letter did not indicate when the interviews occurred.

This is good news! For Hillary!

Some Other Proposals

by John Cole|  May 28, 20088:18 am| 15 Comments

This post is in: I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Clinton Campaign

It is Wednesday, so you know what that means- another opportunity for Lanny Davis to make a contorted and stupid argument about delegates and humiliate himself before the general public. To save him some time, I have come up with a few arguments for him. Here are some arguments he should advance before the Rules Committee this weekend:

1. The Gender Gap apportion: As we know, Clinton often cites the statistic that women only earn 69-77% of what men. Due to the rampant sexism and misogyny of the media, the Rules Committee should level the playing field and punish Obama (hey- Hillary’s supporters are going to punish Obama in the fall for the media’s behavior, why can’t the DNC?). To level the playing field, Obama should only get 77% of the pledged delegates that he earned, the other 23% should be awarded to Hillary.

2. The Legacy Vote: States that Bill Clinton won in 1992 and 1996 and that Hillary won in 2008 shouldhave their delegates count twice. Why? Because they really, really, really like the Clintons. And after all, since we are no longer paying attention to delegates and are making all sorts of other stupid arguments about why Clinton should win, isn’t that as good a reason as anything?

3. A Michigan Plan: To solve the Michigan crisis, I propose we award Hillary all the delegates she “won” in the primary she said would not count, and then give her the majority of the delegates who voted against her in the primary she said would not count. That sounds fair. {Oops. My bad. Lanny actually already proposed this. -ed.}

4. Count all the votes!: All of them. Every vote for dogcatcher, judge, state Houses and Senates, and everything should count- against Obama. Because, let’s face it, if they were not voting for Obama, we might as well count it as a vote for Hillary.

5. Seat ALL the Delegates: Everybody keeps talking about seating the delegates from Florida and Michigan, but for some reason are missing the real elephant in the room- what about all the Republican delegates from the fifty states. As of right now, none of them are being seated at the DNC, and that is a damned outrage. Everyone knows there is no way we can win in the fall without Republican votes, so I don’t know why we want to risk alienating millions of Republican voters in all fifty states. Since Hillary is clearly more popular with conservatives, Fox News, and Republicans, and since the Republicans run winner-take-all primaries, all of the delegates should be seated for Senator Clinton.

I think Lanny should test drive some of these proposals, because, as you all know, if we can not unify the party behind Senator Clinton’s inevitable nomination, we may lose to McCain in the fall.

More On McLellan

by Tim F|  May 27, 20089:52 pm| 56 Comments

This post is in: Politics

dday at Drum’s:

The spate of memoirs that always roll out near the end of an Administration will take on an even greater “every-man-for-himself” quality in this one. From the lowest-level staffer to his personal food-taster, Bush will see half of his underlings or more trash him to every publisher in the country. If someone like McClellan, who was at Bush’s side from the Texas days, is willing to go nuclear to preserve his own reputation, it’ll be a free-for-all.

Here’s the deal: early bailers get some credit for being first (or second or third) out of the gate. Rats that take longer to get off the ship won’t get the same bonus, and anyone still supporting the administration by inauguration day is left holding the legacy. It’s like a game of musical chairs where every seat has a rusty tack on it.

Given the magnitude of Bush’s failure, I doubt the legacy is a smoldering bag that smarter Bushies will want sitting on their porch for the rest of their lives.
