Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

People are weird.

Stand up, dammit!

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Giving up is unforgivable.

The Say Anything Tour Continues

by John Cole|  May 3, 20084:40 pm| 58 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Democratic Stupidity

It just never stops:

Residents of U.S. territories do not have the right to vote in presidential elections, nor do they have full representation in the U.S. Congress.

In an interview with KUAM-TV, Clinton, asked about giving Guam citizens the right to vote for president, said, “I am in favor of full voting rights for every American and that includes the people on Guam.”

After watching every expert denounce her ridiculous with us or against us gas holiday nonsense, her campaign responded with “yeah, but it is polling nicely for us in Indiana.” One can only conclude that the Clinton camp has made the cynical bet that the low information voters they are targeting will never figure out that she is utterly full of shit, so they just say what they have to say to get that extra percentage point.

While extremely cynical, it is also extremely stupid. The only votes that matter at this point are the super-delegate votes, and they are not low-information voters and they aren’t fooled by her nonsense. So in her bid to win more popular votes to attempt to bully the super delegates to vote for her, she turns off more super delegates through blatant dishonesty and pandering. And this is before you realize that while she is throwing out ultimatums to Congress, she hasn’t even written a bill she wants people to consider. She is, quite literally, just saying anything.

And people think this woman and her team are ready on day one to lead this country? Some days I wonder if we might as well just keep Bush.

Happy Mission Accomplished Day!

A few days late; that’s what I get for focusing on my paid job. Anyhow, here’s a popular favorite to commemorate the occasion.

epic fail

BTW, I notice from the post below that we raised eleven thousand freaking dollars for Barack Obama. That’s a lot of money. How much has Kos raised so far? Anybody know? If we can beat RedState-zilla to win a Nobel Peace Prize webbie award then we can kick Markos’s ass. I bet that we can even do it with first-time donors. If you already gave through the link, take a break and spend your money on pizza for a day or two. If you haven’t, click the link and leave a ten spot. It’s as easy as buying a CD from Amazon.

The odds are pretty good that many of you never gave to a campaign before. Yet if you’re reading this blog then odds are good that you’re pissed off about something, you live in America and you have the income to support a net connection, which means that you’re a prime candidate. Plus, in one sense it doesn’t even matte how much you give. The number of unique donors is as important for a campaign as the total dollar value. All you need to do is drop $10 or $25 to register your support and you’ve already made a difference.

…and if that doesn’t work, there is a whole internet full of Katherine Harris photos that I’m not afraid to use if I have to.

Harris

You know what to do.

Bye, Ken!

I know he was a raving liberal, but I could never stand Ken Livingstone.

Boris Johnson has won the race to become the next mayor of London – ending Ken Livingstone’s eight-year reign at City Hall.

The Conservative candidate won with 1,168,738 first and second preference votes, compared with Mr Livingstone’s 1,028,966 on a record turnout of 45%.

Sorry, but I just hated him and I am glad he’s gone. I’m not surprised about the election results in the UK. Tony Blair has pretty much destroyed Labour for the next several years, which is too bad, because other than Iraq, it’s a pretty good party.

I’m watching a re-run of the Eukanuba Championship from 2006.

…and reading about the dumbest lawsuit ever.

That is all. My head hurts.

Does anyone want a cat who will wake you up at any time of the night just because he may or may not be out of food, because I have one I am selling cheap.

Blogging as John +5, I note this:

Robert L. Vesco, the fugitive financier who spent most of his life eluding American justice, might even have managed to die on the sly.

Mr. Vesco, who was sentenced to a long prison term in Cuba in 1996 and was wanted in the United States for crimes ranging from securities fraud and drug trafficking to political bribery, died more than five months ago, on Nov. 23, from lung cancer, say people close to him. If so, it was never reported publicly by the Cuban authorities, who said Friday that they considered him a “nonissue.” American officials said Friday they knew nothing about it.

“We don’t know that it occurred,” an American official said.

If Mr. Vesco indeed eluded the American authorities until his final day, it was the fitting end to his nearly four decades on the run. He was wanted for, among other things, bilking some $200 million from credulous investors in the 1970s, making an illegal contribution to Richard M. Nixon’s 1972 presidential campaign and trying to arrange a deal during the Carter administration to let Libya buy American planes in exchange for bribes to United States officials. .

I don’t know what it is about human nature (or my nature), that has me rooting for “bad guys,” but there are times when I read stories like this that I say “Good for him.” I don’t know what Vesco has done, and he may have been pure evil, but there is still something in me that celebrates people getting one over on “the man.” I am sure people have studied this and can explain it, but I thought it was worth noting.

Obligatory troll- protection: I really know nothing about Vesco, and am just talking about the Hollywood-like allure of someone managing to elude authorities for years.
