Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Trollop Update, Part 2- By What Authority

by John Cole|  May 2, 20084:48 pm| 35 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Politics

The Huffpo has an interview with the jackass who dropped a c-bomb at the McCain event yesterday, and their write-up featured this tidbit:

“The Secret Service agent made me promise not to show up at any McCain campaign events in the future,” said Parrish. “I told him that wouldn’t be a problem – I’d forgotten how boring Republican events are,” he added. “McCain had about 300 really old people today. When Obama campaigns here in the fall, there’ll probably be 15,000 people of all ages and backgrounds, cheering him on.”

By what authority does the Secret Service have right to make people promise, well, anything like that? Hell, a few weeks ago McMaverick didn’t even have Secret Service protection.

Speaking of Obama

I just got back form the local HQ, and I have a bunch of signs and stuff to plant. Sadly, they were out of bumper stickers, so I can not slap one on the laptop.

At any rate, they were all very friendly and energetic, and I will be phone banking all next week at night to help with the GOTV. You WV readers may get the real treat of hearing the soothing sounds of my sweet, sweet voice on the phone next week. Lucky you.

The Wrong Approach

by John Cole|  May 2, 20082:49 pm| 80 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Democratic Stupidity

Obama and others are wrong on this one:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s proposal for a windfall profits tax on oil companies could cost $15 billion a year at last year’s profit levels, a campaign adviser said.

The plan would target profit from the biggest oil companies by taxing each barrel of oil costing more than $80, according to a fact sheet on the proposal. The tax would help pay for a $1,000 tax cut for working families, an expansion of the earned- income tax credit and assistance for people who can’t afford their energy bills.

“The profits right now are so remarkable that one could trim them 10 percent or so, which would turn out to be somewhere in the $15 billion range,” said Jason Grumet, an adviser to the Obama campaign.

I simply oppose the notion that the government should be in the business of deciding how much profit is “too much” (or, for that matter, what is too “little”- see farm subsidies). In addition, unless someone can explain to me how I am wrong, I fail to see how a tax on the price of oil over a certain price won’t simply be passed on to consumers anyway.

If you think large corporations are receiving too much federal largesse in the way of tax breaks, or if you think the corporate tax structure is not adequate, or if you think there are too many corporate loopholes, or any of the above, fine. Fix the tax code (even though even that is still passed on to consumers in the end).

Or, better yet, spur investment in alternative sources of energy, and fewer people will feel the need to buy gasoline, thus reducing their profits. There are lots of courses of action, but I really, really detest this notion that the government should be in the business of deciding who makes too much profit. It may be a politically popular position right now, but that doesn’t make it right. Obama should knock it off.

The Other Idiotic Controversy

by John Cole|  May 2, 20082:39 pm| 13 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

I talked about this briefly in the comments of another post and was going to ignore it, but this Mickey Kantor nonsense is pretty offensive.

I am not talking about his alleged remarks- I am talking about the people pushing this crap. I don’t care, and you shouldn’t care, what a Bill Clinton campaign manager said in 1992. It has no relevance in an election in 2008, and I am really sick to death of this guilt by association crap.

And that is before we even look at the videotape and realize that you simply can not tell what he actually said. Taking what could have been anything and turning it into a sort of racial smear is tawdry, cheap, and offensive. It may be the sort of crap some in the Clinton campaign would do– but that is why folks like Sidney Blumenthal are scum.

So knock it off. Quit asserting Kantor said something he most likely didn’t and you can’t prove anyway. You want to get upset about something outrageous, look no farther than Howard Wolfson. Wolfson has been a one-man fountain of bullshit for months, providing an endless stream of steaming nonsense. Just this week he has come up with new rules for determining the Democratic nominee (the popular vote- but only in states that count), he has lied about whether or not super delegate Andrew is actually from Indiana, and now he is lying about what Clinton actually said during her interview with O’Reilly. I am to the point that I think it is an actual startegy of the Clinton campaign to have Wolfson just make up so many lies and spread so much nonsense that no one in the press will call him on anything, because by the time they have somewhat pinned the slimy bastard down on one lie, he has uttered ten others and they have to play catch-up.

Back to the point. Back off Kantor. It is stupid, and if someone was doing this to the Obama campaign you would be correctly livid.

Another Stupid Controversy

Fired for refusing to sign a 50’s era loyalty oath:

When Wendy Gonaver was offered a job teaching American studies at Cal State Fullerton this academic year, she was pleased to be headed back to the classroom to talk about one of her favorite themes: protecting constitutional freedoms.

But the day before class was scheduled to begin, her appointment as a lecturer abruptly ended over just the kind of issue that might have figured in her course. She lost the job because she did not sign a loyalty oath swearing to “defend” the U.S. and California constitutions “against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

The loyalty oath was added to the state Constitution by voters in 1952 to root out communists in public jobs. Now, 16 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, its main effect is to weed out religious believers, particularly Quakers and Jehovah’s Witnesses.

This is, no doubt, another one of those things that will have people bitching back and forth at each other, and I really have to say I am sick of this sort of nonsense. I don’t even understand the purpose of a loyalty oath to begin with- if your goal is to subvert the government of the United States, you are going to have no problem lying about it before hand. Additionally, if your goal is to bring down the government, I would suggest there are more effective ways than planting sleeper cell agents in American studies classrooms across the country- WE WILL DEFEAT THE GREAT SATAN WITH BAD PEDAGOGY AND HARSH RHETORIC! Seems to me to be a bit of a stretch.

Just so much stupid out there.

Third World Dictators

by John Cole|  May 2, 200811:46 am| 28 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®, Assholes, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Bush and Cheney:

A former cameraman for Al Jazeera who was believed to be the only journalist held at Guantánamo Bay was released on Thursday, after more than six years of detention that made him one of the best known Guantánamo detainees in the Arab.

The detainee, Sami al-Hajj, became a cause in recent years for the Jazeera network, which often displayed his photograph and carried reports on his case.

He was also one of Guantánamo’s long-term hunger strikers, and his lawyers at the British legal group Reprieve drew wide attention to what they said was his declining physical and mental health.

“It is yet another case where the U.S. has held someone for years and years and years on the flimsiest of evidence” without filing charges, one of the lawyers, Zachary Katznelson, said Thursday.

Mr. Hajj, 38, was sent with at least two other detainees to his native Sudan on a military aircraft, the lawyers said. The Pentagon declined to comment.

I am sure right-wing bloggers have lots of evidence that will “come out later” from their double-secret military sources, just like it did with Bilal Hussein.
