Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

T R E 4 5 O N

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

This fight is for everything.

The Toxic Avenger

by Tim F|  May 5, 20089:36 pm| 22 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Democratic Stupidity

Tonight the New York Times will explain why Hillary’s Gas-taxofacism Awareness Week is more than just the ordinary kind of stupid.

Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida has been fighting to cut 10 cents from the state’s gasoline tax for two weeks in July. Lawmakers in Missouri, New York and Texas have also proposed a summer break from state gas taxes, while candidates for governor in Indiana and North Carolina are sparring over relief ideas of their own.

If experience with such gas tax “holidays” is any guide, drivers would save less than politicians suggest. But that is not necessarily the point.

“It’s about trying to serve the people and trying to understand and have caring, compassionate hearts for what they’re dealing with at the kitchen table,” said Mr. Crist, a Republican.

He added, “I’m supposed to respond to the people and try to make them happy.”

[…] When Illinois and Indiana suspended about 7 cents of their state gas taxes in the summer of 2000, prices fell by an average of only 4 cents, according to a study by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, which opposed the plans. Drivers saved no more than $2.50 a month, while each state lost tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue.

Previous gas tax holidays caused other problems, too. During the last gas tax suspension in Florida in 2004, people hoarded gasoline, driving up demand and prices.

Hillary obviously didn’t write these proposals herself. So what? Gas tax holidays have zero support from experts, a terrible track record and would mostly languish among the other symbolic clutter that state legislatures push around every day if Hillary didn’t push the issue to the front of the news. Her support gives a dumb idea credibility.

Many state legislators are not that bright in the best of days. Add frantic constituents and the recession economy playing merry-merry with no-deficit state budgets and you have a population of people looking very anxiously at the next election.

A good number will follow Hillary’s lead right over a cliff. Or off a bridge.

We did it:

Goal Thermometer

Congratulations and thanks. Just got back from a few hours of phone-banking (I really suck at it- I get impatient when I get a number of no answers, then take it deeply personally when they tell me they are supporting Nixon Hillary.), and I am here to report that the Morgantown Obama HQ is fueled by chocolate, caffeine, and IPOD music.

At any rate, 15k in two weeks is pretty awesome.

In the last thirty minutes our ActBlue thermometer went up more than $2500. That means that less than an hour after John predicted that we would never make it by Tuesday, we made our goal. We honestly have no idea what just happened but if I had to guess, I’d say that someone out there really likes proving John wrong.

Good work all around, and many, many thanks to all of you who contributed.

Depressing Post of the Day

by John Cole|  May 5, 20082:33 pm| 20 Comments

This post is in: War, War on Terror aka GSAVE®, General Stupidity, Outrage

Via Spencer Ackerman via Matt Yglesias, our leadership at work figuring out that whacky Arab culture:

U.S. officials painstakingly examine evidence and laws while attempting to satisfy victims’ claims through cash compensation.

But traditional Arab society values honor and decorum above all. If a man kills or badly injures someone in an accident, both families convene a tribal summit. The perpetrator admits responsibility, commiserates with the victim, pays medical expenses and other compensation, all over glasses of tea in a tribal tent.

“Our system is so different from theirs,” said David Mack, a former U.S. diplomat who has served in American embassies in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. “An honor settlement has to be both financial and it has to have the right symbolism. We would never accept their way of doing things, and they don’t accept ours.”

Matt snarks: “What a fascinating place Iraq must be! Maybe someday we’ll discover that in Arab culture they have this weird thing where people’s political allegiances are heavily influenced by issues of ethnic, cultural, and religious identity and that having their destinies controlled by a foreign, religiously alien, occupying army that doesn’t speak the language is kind of a drag. Who knows?”

Sadly, it is pointed out in Matt’s comments that the Onion was there first:

A field study released Monday by the University of North Carolina School of Public Health suggests that Iraqi citizens experience sadness and a sense of loss when relatives, spouses, and even friends perish, emotions that have until recently been identified almost exclusively with Westerners.

“We were struck by how an Iraqi reacts to the sight of the bloody or decapitated corpse of a family member in a not unlike an American, or at the very least a Canadian, would,” said Dr. Jonathan Pryztal, chief author of the study. “In addition to the rage, bloodlust, and hatred we already know to dominate the Iraqi emotional spectrum, it appears that they may have some capacity, however limited, for sadness.”

Though Pryztal was quick to add that more detailed analysis is needed, he said the findings cast some doubt on long-held assumptions about human nature in that region.

At some point in the not so distant future, we may be better off turning over our entire government to the staff of the Onion.

Not Going to Make It

I don’t think we are going to hit 15k by tomorrow, but still, we have raised a sizable chunk. Not to mention that our original goal was only 10k, which we have passed by a great deal.

Goal Thermometer

At any rate, $12k is still pretty damned impressive.

BTW- Several more super delegates for Obama, including two from Maryland and one at-large super, as well as reports that California supers once in the bag for Hillary are now wavering.

When Did She Become Bubba?

James Hrynyshyn went to a Hillary rally:

In the hours following the speech, which was delivered before a pair of the largest flags I have every seen draped across the width of Main Street, I got more and more depressed. Not only did Clinton’s speech avoid anything remotely resembling a respect for the challenges and contributions that science poses and offers society, but she seemed to go out of her way to appeal to an anti-intellectual strain that her advisers must have told her holds sway in the largely Republican county in which she found herself.

First there was the repetition of her support for a gas tax holiday, which, as Jake has ably pointed out at Pure Pendantry, is perhaps the stupidest idea yet mooted in this campaign. How she squares this with her not-quite-a-plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 80 percent by 2050 is beyond me. Or anyone else, I would think.

Such an idea is, as an educated friend of mine who very much wants to support Clinton told me as we waited for Clinton to arrive, an insult to her intelligence. But then, there was Clinton, insulting the intelligence of her audience every chance she got. The only common theme to emerge from the 30-minute ramble was an attack on our enemies. China is the enemy for selling us lead-contaminated toys and poison pet food. The Saudis are the enemy for exploiting our addition to oil. The rest of OPEC, too. And worst of all are those evil, parasitic “middlemen” who pop up in every corner of the economy, ready to take a cut and give back nothing.

I am waiting for the bus and just listened to Hillary, at a rally in NC, say all of the above and declare that we need to change our laws so that we can sue OPEC for anti-trust violations. Along with that gem were the usual spiel from her these days, including the assertion that not only does Obama not want the BIG EVIL OIL COMPANIES to pay the gas tax for you this summer, but that he wants you to pay for it yourself.

Why doesn’t she just change her name to Huey Long? Seriously, though- when did this happen? I remember when Hilary was the detached policy wonk, who coldly and coolly analyzed problems, and now she has morphed into some unsophisticated bubba who hates the man, hates ideas, and hates everything but joe six-pack and his shotgun and coon hound. I fully expect her to show up to her next rally in the General Lee.

It is depressing, really. Granted, I have a long history of Clinton hatred behind me (and now I think it was a well-founded Clinton hatred), and while I may have thought it was cured and was fully ready to vote for her last October, that has since passed. My Clinton hate clearly only went into remission from 2002-2007, because it has certainly flared up lately. I thought she had turned into a pretty respectable middle of the road Senator, but now I just see crazy every time I look at her. Her foreign policy seems lifted from the Weekly Standard, her domestic policies from the Kingfish, and the faux-populist nonsense seems designed only to dumb down the debate enough to grab a few more votes in the hopes that the supers decide to change their mind and throw the race to Hillary.

Even for a Clinton hater, her decline has been a sad spectacle, and I find the idea of the so-called “Unity ticket” to be horrifying. I don’t want Hillary any where near the White House any more, and Tim was right last night- the kind of crazy Hillary is spewing right now is no different from the David Horowitz crazy we have been dealing with for years. She isn’t campaigning or trying to sell her ideas- she is publicly airing an enemies list. Does anyone really doubt Hillary would propose a Gastaxofascism Week if she thought it would win her two percentage points in NC?

A link to the OPEC suing nonsense. I can’t believe this is not getting more attention, it is so damned crazy.

Obama-Clinton?

by Michael D.|  May 5, 20085:06 am| 134 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

It is for many in the Obama camp an unthinkable thought. But politics is sometimes the art of adjusting today to what seemed inconceivable yesterday. I’m talking about the possibility — and the powerful logic — of a unity Obama-Clinton ticket for the Democrats.

Andrew Sullivan is either onto something…or just on something. I have a bet with my neighbor that Hillary will not accept anything less than the #1 spot. A Clinton simply will not settle for a subordinate position. He thinks she will. A case of fine ale is on the line.

What do you think?
