Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Republicans in disarray!

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Tomorrow’s Clinton Commercial Today

Hamas Endorses Obama

On Sunday, Aaron Klein and John Batchelor interviewed Ahmed Yousef, chief political adviser to the Prime Minister of Hamas, on WABC radio. The interview produced a scoop which, for some reason, has not been widely publicized: Hamas has endorsed Barack Obama for President. Yousef said, “We like Mr. Obama and we hope he will win the election.” Why? “He has a vision to change America.” Maybe Yousef has some insight into what Obama means by all these vague references to “change.”

And who can blame her if she does run with this? I mean, after all, Rush Limbaugh is gonna ask this question in the fall, so we better get it out there right now. AMIRITE?

More Losses

by John Cole|  April 17, 20088:13 am| 25 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Election 2008, Media

Merrill Lynch:

Merrill Lynch said Thursday that it lost $1.96 billion for the first quarter this year, as the meltdown in the housing and credit markets continued to batter the firm.

Much of that stemmed from more than $9.4 billion in write-downs and “credit valuation adjustments” tied to the firm’s holdings in mortgage securities and loans meant to finance leveraged buyouts. The firm also said it intends to cut 4,000 jobs, or 10 percent of its workforce.

The loss, which amounts to $2.19 a share on revenues of $2.93 billion, is a sharp reversal from the $2.16 billion in profit and $9.6 billion in revenue it earned in the same time last year. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News had expected on average a loss of $1.79 a share.

John A. Thain, the firm’s chairman and chief executive, acknowledged that the quarter was trying by any measure.

While that is important and everything, and probably a bit depressing, I really wish ABC would get some reporters to the main office and start asking Thain the important questions- does he wear a flag lapel pin? Is his minister patriotic? Will raising the capital gains tax make it tough for soccer moms to fill their Mercedes? Has he ever received sniper fire in Bosnia?

I wish journalists had their priorities straight and would get to the bottom of these pressing questions.

McCain’s Surge

by John Cole|  April 17, 20088:07 am| 44 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

The AP:

Republicans are no longer underdogs in the race for the White House. To pull that off, John McCain has attracted disgruntled GOP voters, independents and even some moderate Democrats who shunned his party last fall.

Partly thanks to an increasingly likable image, the Republican presidential candidate has pulled even with the two Democrats still brawling for their party’s nomination, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo news poll released Thursday. Just five months ago — before either party had winnowed its field — the survey showed people preferred sending an unnamed Democrat over a Republican to the White House by 13 percentage points.

Also helping the Arizona senator close the gap: Peoples’ opinions of Hillary Rodham Clinton have soured slightly, while their views of Barack Obama have improved though less impressively than McCain’s.

The funniest thing about this election will be watching the idiots who tried to savage McCain all through the primaries drop everything and rush to embrace him, but as I have said a number of times, McCain is probably the only Republican who stood a chance in the general this year. The rest of the piece is well, just what you would expect when the opposition party is intent on destroying itself. I wouldn’t worry too much about this, though, because Hillary supporters have told me she is the only one who can win so she has to destroy the party in order to save it.

Culture of Life Update

In case you missed it. 7-2 says lethal injection is ok. Along with most of you around here, I think execution by any means is an abhorrent embarrassment to this country.

Still, if we’re going to have lethal injection (and it looks like we will for the forseeable future) and if we want to see if it is a painful method of execution (or if we want to see how often it is botched) why not simply leave out the pancuronium bromide – the paralytic? After all, it seems to me the only reason it is administered is to eliminate any chance that observers will see the results of any pain the final drug may inflict.

I’m not a doctor (and, by the way, neither are the people who administer lethal injections), so I don’t know if there are any other reasons for the use of pancuronium bromide. But if lethal injection doesn’t cause pain, then there is no need for it, right?

Just a thought.

Post “Debate” Summary

by Michael D.|  April 17, 20084:48 am| 77 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, General Stupidity

“I had chicken for dinner. It was really good. I really need to catch up on some laundry tonight. I’m kind of sad that Pricilla Presley was voted off of Dancing With The Stars last night. My daughter decided on a college today. I love ice cream.

“I wonder if ABC will schedule a debate for me to discuss these things on national television.” – BarbinMD

It made me laugh, anyway. I actually fell asleep during the debate. It started to sound like the world’s most painful engagement in small talk.

Update:

Worst. Debate. Ever. – Richard Adams: The Guardian
Godawful Moderation – ABC News comments
Garbage time – TNR

and, finally:

“I thought the questions were excellent” – David Brooks.

Debate Post Thread

Or, at least I think it is over. I am watching HGTV, which I occasionally do to reinforce my decision to rent. I will know my life is over when I become actively concerned about what kind of baseboards I have in my living room. Or if I become an active bowler.

Consider this an open thread.

*** Update ***

Apparently people are upset about the debate. All I can say is that it is your fault for watching, and if you do not have your mind made up by this point, you are one of those idiot undecideds I will want to beat on November 1st when you are interviewed by some man on the street reporter AND YOU STILL HAVE NOT DECIDED BETWEEN MCCAIN OR NOT MCCAIN AFTER 8 MONTHS. Seriously, while the debate performance by the media may have been shameful, it doesn’t mean a thing to me.

I will tell you what is shocking- the BSG episode I am watching. I can not believe those idiots nominated Tom Zarek for VP. Jesus- they can’t let that terrorist in charge of the fate of the human race.

At any rate, I tossed another $50.00 to the Obama campaign.

I won’t be watching, because I don’t really care anymore. This primary has sucked the will to live out of me, and unless Obama unveils a comprehensive plan to bugger every child in the country, he is still my choice over Hillary.

I should probably also point out that the election really isn’t at stake. Hillary has already lost, she just doesn’t realize it yet. But you know the press, they want their little race, so the show must go on.

At any rate, consider this an open thread.
