Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

So many bastards, so little time.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Change: An Open Thread

by Michael D.|  January 7, 200810:37 pm| 23 Comments

That seems to be the recurring theme coming from the Democrats. As good as change would be, given what we would be changing from, I can’t help but think of an episode of Cheers, when Woody was elected to office:

Woody: “I believe I was elected to the City Council as an agent of change. And I fully intend to live up to that pledge: I will make change.”
Dr. Crane: Change ‘change’ to ‘a change’.
Woody: A what?
Dr. Crane: You see, in here, you make ‘change’. There, you make ‘a change’. So, just make the change. Change ‘make change’ to ‘make *a* change’.
Dr. Crane: [frustrated and yells] Oh, just change it!
[Frasier storms off] Woody: [to Norm] Boy, I think I see why Dr. Crane never cures anybody.

Update: I have been watching CNN since about 9:45. It is now 11:15. I think I have seen the Hillary Clinton “almost crying” cut about 8-10 times now. Enough already. Christ.

Partially inspired by this comment, but in large part because I think it is time for a change, I think I am open to the idea of one of you (or a collaboration of you) re-designing the site.

What do you all think? Is it time for a change? If so, we can figure out how to go about it.

And WVU would have beaten either one of these scrub teams in the National Championship.

Which Is More Pathetic

A poll- “Which is More Pathetic?”

a.) Duncan Hunter staging a press conference to announce he is still running for President.

b.) Red State begging for cash because there are no conservative programmers.

“Both” is not an acceptable answer.

Hot As Hell

An unexpected heat wave in West Virginia, and I am actually wearing shorts.

It is a good thing, too, because my office is so damned hot I am sweating. To give you an idea how hot it is, the older secretaries, who generally wear sweaters in August, are bitching about the heat and opening their windows.

Factor in that I like to keep my house about 62 degrees, and you have an idea how miserable I am right now.

Shrum Chimes In

Look, I am not buying into the whole ‘Hillary is over” bit (in part because I am starting to think the pundits and the Clinton haters are being disproportionately heard at the moment- I just don’t sense any real residual Hillary hate where I am), but if things are going so bad that Bob Shrum is not ashamed to give advice, you have problems:

So it’s a long shot, with one and only one possible road to recovery: Let Hillary be Hillary. Throw away the product packaging – those poll-tested small-bites of policy – and set out a big case about what she wants to do in the next four years, not what she has done for the past 35.

The pursuit of the presidency is not a résumé contest. Otherwise a one-term congressman named Lincoln never would have beaten Stephen Douglas, “the little giant” of American politics; Kennedy never would have prevailed against Nixon, and the young Bill Clinton never would have ousted the first George Bush from the White House.

The conventional caveat is that things could change. World events could refocus voters on Hillary’s strengths – or on Obama’s weaknesses. Yet as of today, it is far more likely that Hillary Clinton won’t be giving an acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. Maybe Obama, the unifier, will let her speak in prime time.

Yes, Virginia. That Bob Shrum (Joe Klein link replaced with someone with a better track record).

Have at it.

And this is for all you who thought it took nerve for a WV guy to taunt folks from Iowa as nothing but corn farmers up to their ears in pig shit:

Thin-Skinned, Much?

I see via Memeorandum that Hillary got super-duper angry or something last night, and Sullivan has the apparently over-the-top reaction from Hillary:

Sullivan also has the idiots that Frank Lutz is apparently learning from:

“Hillary seemed to crack…”

I actually have about had it with all this crap, because I am sick and tired of defending Hillary. But if that was Hillary ‘cracking,’ or seething with anger, or whatever you want to call it (Andy states he thinks “she’s actually offended that anyone is challenging her for the Democratic nomination.”), I just don’t see it. in fact, I am beginning to think this really is a nation of wimps.

What you saw was someone making the point that there is more to change than just supporting change, and that change takes hard work. And that offends people? Seriously- change is work, and that is the point she is trying to drive home. And she has a right to be a little frustrated. What exactly has John Edwards done? Not much when he was in the Senate, if you remember the Republican talking points from the past election. What major bills does Obama have under his belt?

Quite frankly, I hate to say this, but I think what we are actually seeing is a double-standard here, and the feminists may be right. This is all about Hillary being a woman. John Edwards has been 150 times as angry the whole campaign, and has built his entire campaign around it. Howard Dean was angry, and people lapped it up. Here, Hillary isn’t really angry, just matter-of-fact and frustrated, and people are giving her shit.

I don’t want Hillary as President, but it sure looks to me like she isn’t getting a fair shake and is being subjected to a double standard. It’s bullshit.

And while I am ranting, one last thing- Watch that Luntz polling group video again and try to argue that it is not well beyond the time to end these special primaries and caucuses (cauci?). We are placing an inordinate amount of power in the electoral process in a bunch of yokels up to their armpits in pig shit and corn in Iowa and sipping mocha while driving a Volvo in New Hampshire. All the primaries, same day. Something. Anything.

*** Update ***

Apparently my ten+ year old memories of NH are off. I remember lots of wealth, lots of yuppie type shops with flowerbaskets and gingerbread woodowork, lots of flannel for effect. Whatever. My apologies to offended New Hampsherites, but in 2012 I say you should pound salt and to hell with your privileged status within our electoral process.
