That was one of my favorite games and can’t find my copy of it anywhere. Probably pitched it three computers ago.

Looks like Amazon has it in stock:

Always go to Amazon or ebay when you can’t find something. :)
BettyPageisaBlonde
You can get it via Steam. It’s $4.99. It’s a download that way.
bloodstar
There’s always Amazon. of course I have two copies, just cause I keep losing and finding my copy again and again.

No idea. Did you try googling it before invoking yer flying monkeys?

When in doubt, turn to eBay. I haven’t set foot in a Dept. Store in years.

@Death By Mosquito Truck: Yes, I looked. I could find torrents, which I do not use. And I could find hard copies at Amazon, which I did not want to wait for. But I could not find what I precisely asked for, which was a place I could “buy and download.”
BettyPageisaBlonde gave me what I wanted.
So stick it.

I usually look for older games on Amazon. Just ordered Baldur’s Gate I & II w/ expansions for $20.

Torrents are very, very bad. There can be all kinds of trojan horses and viruses embedded in their downloads. It’s a real crapshoot that I try to avoid.

And it’s illegal.
While the video game industry hasn’t been quite as insane in pursuing illegal downloads as the record industry has, there remains the possibility that they might just start drinking from the crazy juice too and drag your butt to court.

I don’t use torrents for all of the above reasons, plus a big one that you all have skipped. If I steal their game and love it, they have no way of knowing how much I liked it. If I buy it, and a lot more people buy it, then they might make MORE.
Always buy software when you can.

From Me, how about a sneak peak gameplay demo of Modern Warfare 2 @ E3. Sick, just sick.

Steam has a ton of great games available for download, and BettyPageisaBlonde was right to point you there.
Gametap is another good option. The way their model works is that you pay a monthly or yearly fee, and in exchange for that fee, you get to play whichever of the thousand-or-so games in their library that you want. The advantage over Steam is that you pay one price for a thousand games. The disadvantage is that you only have access to the game for as long as you maintain your membership. So I’d recommend going to their website and poking around to see if they have enough that interests you to justify the membership (personally, I think it’s a fabulous library that is well worth the money).
The Cat Who Would Be Tunch
I take it you didn’t ever get around to finishing Mass Effect, then? BTW, if you’re going to be using Steam, don’t touch the Plants vs. Zombies demo. No, really, you shouldn’t. Or I suspect the Tunch fans will be running to West Virginia to storm your house…

@The Grand Panjandrum: There you go, my friend.

Yeah, not to shill, but Steam is really the way to go these days if you’re going to game on a Windows PC and don’t have a laughable internet connection speed.
They seem to have good deals, they promote oddball and indie stuff, the games are downloaded to any PC you want to use them on (so there’s no grief moving to a new one, just a big ass download and maybe figuring out how to preserve saves), and it beats the hell out of trolling Gamestop or Wal-Mart or waiting for Amazon to deliver.
Sadly, I’m running Linux so my PC gaming is somewhat curtailed. Before I “upgraded” to KDE 4, Wine worked for a surprising amount of things, including some Steam stuff, but my framerates and network latency have dropped off a cliff with the current setup. But I bought a 360 to fulfill my game cravings: I’m learning to love FPS, the downloadable games are a nice eclectic mix, and Squenix is even developing for the platform now. Final Fantasy 13 is to be a cross-platform release. Insert exploding heads here.

Oh, wow, John never finished Mass Effect? That would be a shame. I was a little disappointed with the “oh no big game-changing decision” bit, and I regret bothering to land on as many junk planets as I did (EVIL, EVIL OFFROADING HELL), but if you just look at the storyline gaming and the better half of the side quests, that was as consistent, interesting, and satisfying as any 25-30 hour RPG I’ve played.

I finished Mass Effect months ago. What are you all talking about?
The Cat Who Would Be Tunch
@Ked:
I’m not sure actually, which is why I was asking. I suspect John pulled a Prachett (he got a couple of recommendations from readers, started reading a book, stopped, and forgot about it).
But I completely agree with the side-quests. After walking through secret base #1000, bases that all seemed to have been designed by the same damned set architects and engineers, I felt like shooting myself. I actually completed just about all the side-quests. Ughh.
Apparently, ME 2 will allow you to use save games from the first game which is supposed to impact how the story plays out. Perhaps that’s where we’ll begin to see the fruition of Bioware’s “actions have consequences” design approach.

D-Chance.
Yes, I looked. I could find torrents, which I do not use.
Too bad. I use them quite often for downloads of movies and programs not licensed in the US market, mostly Japanese anime.
BUT… stick to known fansubbers. Avoid those sources you aren’t 100% certain about. And buy the titles of the series you like when they become licensed and distributed in the States (although I find the production companies usually do inferior voice work compared to their Japanese counterparts… and their sub-title interpretations are not as faithful to the original Japanese scripts as most fansubbers).

@The Cat Who Would Be Tunch: I greatly enjoyed the end of Mass Effect. It had some problems, but overall it was good. It reminded me of Baldur’s Gate I, in that it showed a lot of promise for the future. Hopefully Bioware follows history here, because Baldur’s Gate II turned out to be the best game ever.

BTW – a simple bitch to those who have zero problem downloading free stuff…why? As a producer/business owner, you take money from my pocket when you do that. If you like a song or a movie so much at least pay for it whether it’s a .99 track or a 4.99 Itunes download or something.

Got a question for the group.
Have not been following threads very closely lately since I’ve actually had to work @ work.
Does anyone know how closing the dealerships is supposed to save the manufacturers money?
I can certainly see other reasons for doing it (breaking up the protectionists practices of dealerships, getting rid of the poor service providers, restricting future supply to raise prices). But I have not seen how it is supposed to save GM or Chrysler money.
The vehicles on the lots are purchased by the dealerships, so the unmoved inventory is not GM or Chrysler’s problem.
Sorry if this has been covered.
thanks,
Laura W
I KNEW I would do this, even though I had it in my Day Timer!
So You Think You Can Dance is on tonight. More auditions. I missed the first hour, mindlessly listening to KO while dithering here.
I suck. I hate Balloon Juice.
The Populist
Tengu,
You make a good point. I have zero problem with people TRYING SOMETHING. If they download it and it’s unavailable, the studio/label can’t cry. If it’s available yet people want it for nothing, I expect they should pay if they like it.
The problem is when people hate on something they download for nothing and then keep it on their hard drive or pass it onto thousands more.
Argh.
The Populist
Lee: Less inventory as dealers are contractually bound to carry xxx units of any given model of car I believe.
I agree, these closings on the face don’t look like they are saving all that much money but I LOVE how the rural congressmen are up in arms when THEIR dealerships close. A lot are GOP twits who whined about the car companies cutting costs. Now they do it and it’s the old “not MY dealership.”
LOL.

@John Cole: I have been known to buy music that I had downloaded & really liked, to express my appreciation. Quaint, innit?
PS, started reading the first sample chapters Guillermo del Toro’s new novel The Strain on my Kindle iPhone app, and it’s riveting so far. I’m definitely buying the whole thing. Being able to read free samples before I buy is the best development in book selling evar.

Here’s a crazy question — I’m rather a Luddite when it comes to music. I have a cheapie MP3 player, but only use it when going for walks — and the music consists of stuff I uploaded myself from the original CDs. The rest of the time, it’s either CDs on the stereo or CDs in the car (gasp!)
Anyhoodle, I figure that I’ll save on packaging and time if I download the CDs and just burn them myself instead of going to the store. Can anybody recommend some good, legal, downloading sites that work in Canada? Does iTunes work to burn onto CD, or just on your computer and your iPod?
Krista
Oh indeedy — I’ve been trying Warrior level instead of Chieftain, and it’s quite a bit tougher. Any good tips?
chuck
Mass Effect’s main storyline, great. But it suffers from the usual RPG-itis problems: the loot economy, and side quests during the main mission.
Galactic civilization on the brink of annihilation and you’re the only one who can stop it? Sorry buddy, you still need to cough up the credits for that weapon. Go explore some planets, do some odd jobs. No problem, Saren will wait.
Great game, but as it is with all CRPG’s, when you have eleventy hojillion hours of gameplay, you either have to have a lot of filler to kill the pacing or your story has to be more epic than Gilgamesh.
Rick Taylor
I’ll just put in a plug for Grim Fandango; my favorite puzzle adventure game.
lee
It has been awhile but I was playing and winning at Warrior level and IIRC, the key to warrior is to use diplomacy to neutralize at least one opponent. You can also have them become your vassal (or whatever the term Civ4 uses).
Another trick is the culture bomb, if you can manage one of those close to your border early in the game you can neutralize an enemy.
I still remember when I set off a culture bomb early enough that it split my neighbors area. Easy pickings after that.
(all this against bots, never had much use for online play).
Remembered one more thing.
Start playing Warrior on the ‘Big Lake’ map. That way you only have to worry about your immediate neighbors right away. After that move to the 2 or 3 island maps.

Waaay back in the 90’s sometime I saw Sugarsmack at the 9:30 and my friend bought a cd from them. I handed them $15 and said, nah, “I’ll burn a copy of hers.” Hope hugged me. SO being nice to bands is nice.

The Cat Who Would Be Tunch
@chuck: Yeah. I really enjoyed BG 2’s side quests as well as Planescape: Torment’s. I thought those two games set the standard for side-quests. Most of the quests were really FedEx missions but they were encapsulated with interesting storylines and great rewards.
@Rick Taylor: Here, here! I will say that I’m stoked about the recently announced “Tales from Monkey Island” and the updated version of the first game.
@Krista:
iTunes should work just fine for downloading MP3s (obviously) and for burning them to a CD. You just need to make sure to purchase DRM free tracks. I haven’t used iTunes in a long while so it’s possible that DRM-free is the standard for the songs sold now. I’ve also liked Amazon’s MP3 service but unfortunately, I don’t think it’s available to you Canucks yet.
chuck
@Krista:
Expand. Like crazy. Fill every available space with settlers. Become legion. It’s virtually the sole success factor in the game. Take risks in the early game, even leaving towns undefended if you have to (wild animals won’t enter your borders). River tiles are a must. Avoid jungles in the early game, they take forever to clear. Avoid going to war unless your first strike is absolutely devastating, or you will be bogged down for ages, literally. If you do go to war, go scorched earth and pillage every improvement they build, especially strategic resources like iron and horses.
Trade technologies promiscuously, as long as you’re not being outright robbed. If you don’t, your rivals will anyway.
Crashman06
@The Cat Who Would Be Tunch: Haven’t bought from iTunes in a while, but I believe most of the downloads are DRM free now…

Yes. And Master of Orion. The original. Stayed up for soooo many nights on my 486 DX2/50. The silicoids I think they were called, were the shizzle. Ate metals, you didn’t need to farm, so they could withstand planet blockades.
While we’re on this topic, Starcontrol 2. Still amazing after all of these years.

Pre IV, absolutely, but cities are *hugely* expensive in IV. The empire size penalty is set stupid high.
You’re absolutely right about trading techs though.

Krista
That’s the only thing — the money gets very, very sparse.
I definitely agree about the culture bomb, though. I always giggle with glee when I get a Great Artist — look out, bitches!
lee
IIRC, There are ways to mitigate the expense. But in general you really need to be much more careful of your placment of cities with IV.
I think with one of the wonders and with certain gov/religion/economy you can carry significantly more cities. The key is that one (or two) wonder. If you don’t get that and go with a lot of cities you’re pretty much screwed,

I think everybody in this thread is speaking some sort of terrist Islamo-fascist furrin language. I mean, seriously, bombings and taking over whole cities and words that I never heard or seen? Call Homeland Security! Oh wait. Video games. I understand that some people play them. But I simply cannot support them in the abstract. In more interesting subjects, has everyone seen Ben Smith’s post slamming the very easy on the eyes and ears Richard Wolffe? The little green monster is running rampant throughout. Giving some music away is actually a smart business move. Amazon puts some tracks on a free download and they you a chance to get to know the artist. I downloaded a song from Diane Birch and ended up buying her new album as a result. I am much more likely to buy something I know is good rather than just taking a chance based on 30 second snippets.

Steam has it for $4.99
Nice thing about them is that if you remember your user name and password, you’ll be able to download to any future machine you buy.
EDIT: Never mind. I see somebody else helped upthread.
Steam is the only way to fly for the games they carry, and once in a while you can find pretty good deals on them as well.
RRT2 is the bomb, by the way. Along with M.U.L.E. probably the two best economic simulations disguised as games going.
FYI. Look for the mouse patch as well as the 1.57 patch for it. The mouse patch makes the mouse scrolling more compatible with faster XP/Vista boxes.

My tips for Civ4: expand quickly, and build an army (at least two units per town) because of barbarians and opponent. I also attack less advanced civilizations early and try to knock one or two out quickly (if you play as the Romans, get iron working quickly and build lots of legionaries). I’ve been playing the Terra game, where everyone starts off in the “Old World” and you start pretty close to your rivals. If you play that one, get to Astronomy first, build lots of Galleons and expand to the “New World” quickly. Just know that there will be barbarian cities when you get there. I should note, I also haven’t moved beyond Chieftain yet, and have been playing the Epic pace.

I’d do it myself except I can’t write worth a damn and I’d probably get pissed off, completely lose my shit around page 11 and go off on an insane ranting tangent about how Krauthammer is primarily motivated by his bitterness about no longer being able to dress up in a furry costume and fuck dogs because he’s in a wheelchair. Incentives and dealership agreements for starters.
Lots of money flows from the factories to the dealers, otherwise the dealers would never be able to afford the cost of the cars or offer incentives.
Basically the factories want to the cars to move so they can sell more cars. Cars that sit on a lot don’t make them good money, especially if there is a clause that says they have to buy them back from the dealer if they don’t sell.

For fun, I recommend Plants vs. Zombies from Steam. It was 10 bucks, and I’m using it has my mindless time killer. Swarms of Zombies enter from the right and move towards the left, and you have to kill them all with a variety of plants that do stuff.

From what I understand (which could be wrong) the dealerships own the cars and the incentives only kick in when the cars sell. So if they sit on the lot, GM and Chrylser are not out any money and it is the dealership’s problem.
It could be they are filing BK to get out of some of their contracts that require them to buy back unsold cars.

I don’t really see the problem with torrents.
Virus problems are never as bad as people say, especially on older content that has been thoroughly vetted by everyone. It’s the brand new stuff you have to worry about.

I would find a torrent for both instances, have in the past, and will in the future. I know this place is for more corporatist democrats, but when the corps decide to fuck with the people because they get their panties in a bunch, we’ll just take the long way around instead.
Stereotypes are bad, people. Not everyone that torrents is some sort of thief. I would argue that most aren’t.

@gnomedad: Yes. It’s like people referring to an entire computer system as “the hard drive”. It’s completely incorrect terminology, it drives me a bit nuts every time I hear it, and it’s absolutely unstoppable. Let the juggernaut of mushed-up English roll on!
Incidentally, if anyone is interested in the original “Railroad Tycoon”, it’s been released for free by the authors.

Gametap is a great deal, especially if you buy a year’s subscription.

RRT2 was pretty much my entry into the economic simulation games. Of course, when I bought RRT3, I fully expected it to play similarly to RRT2, and when it didn’t I put it down for about two years. When I realized what was going on within RRT3 and finally got the hang of it, I haven’t really booted up RRT2 since. I loved how RRT3 was so much more plugged into economics due to the invisible shipping thing…
The Civ games are starting to leave me behind in the dust… I just cannot spend that kind of time on one game of Civ4 that I used to be able to. I’ve been playing the heck out of Colonization (the original, not the remake) as well as Alpha Centauri though, I really can’t spend too many more than ten hours on each and I still get to the end mostly.

When the link weirdness starts happening try posting the comment and then editing it immediately afterwards. For whatever reason the blogging engine will stick weird “nofollow” tags at the end of the link which seem to bollix things up. If you edit those out the weirdness disappears and the rest of your post shows up. Also I discovered that the cause of some of the blockquote weirdness I’ve seen where you mark up a block of text only to have an empty blockquote show up with the text you contained within the blockquote tags showing up below the empty blockquote to be caused by lines of text within the blockquote that contain an empty space at the beginning of the line.

@Krista:
Always was ga-ga for redheads but always ended up with too much heart trouble. What made them special made them dangerous (and vice versa of course). But after getting blown to bits a couple of times I got tired of being crazy about nitro.
Fortunately the sexy of dark haired wimmin clobbers me so hard it just about makes my ears bleed, especially dark dark brown haired ones, extra-especially with ones with some natural red highlights and extra-extra-especially the same with very short hair.
[Looks over at dark-dark brown-with-dark-red-highlights short haired wife] Yeah. Like ’em like that.

@Rusty:
I loved Freedom Force. With that and X-Com now on Steam, I may just be playing some old school games now.
Now, if I could only find a copy of Warlords 2 or 3…

I’m tickled by the fact that you like RR Tycoon. Rails II was indeed a good game. Rails 3 is actually probably a more reaslistic one, but not as fun.
Civilization IV, however, is on another level entirely. Fair warning: if you like strategy games, this game may be dangerous to your health (and the health of any relationships you may have). It’s sorta like smoking. You try one at a bar one night and somehow 10 years later you look back and realize somehow you ended up smoking a pack a day… except of course Civ doesn’t cause cancer. BONUS!
