Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Let there be snark.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

“They all knew.”

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Had one of thos really great nights tonight. Brian is one of those guys who could cook in a 5 star restaurant, and dinner was just great, then we went to the basement and watched Planet Earth on Blu Ray. Sam and Lily had a great time, too:

I’ve heard Planet Earth is stunning on Blu-Ray, but have also read that for some reason they didn’t put on the extras that come with the normal DVD set. Anyway, sounds fun.

    Awwww, the sweeties!

Thank you, Mr. Cole, for lowering my blood pressure.

Also, Planet Earth is wonderful in any incarnation, but the original Attenborough-narrated version is preferable to the Sigourney-Weaver-narrated “don’t use the ‘evolution’ word” BBC-America version. The first time I saw the Blu-Ray discs advertised, they were the Weaver version, unfortunately.

    Apropos of nothing, two things…

    1) dickwhisperer has to be the all time best nick name for a journalist.

    2) One of the more unfortunate last names I’ve every seen: Asplundh. Which reads (to me) Ass Plunder. I’ve seen their trucks recently around my work.

“Hey Ninerdave, what do you do for a living?”

    “I work for Ass plundah.”

Of course I’m 40 going on 5….so maybe it’s only me that thinks it funny.

Blech! They cut the word “evolution” out because it would cause butt-hurt amongst the fundies and inelegant design twats? Like those fuckwits would be watching anything other than Fox.

Oh, and here is the most brilliant explanation of the theory of evolution (does that get capitalized?) I’ve ever heard (WARNING: I’ve only taken three years of biology in my life and that was in junior high and high school). I present Irish comedian Dara O’Briain, who I think is one of the funniest comedians I’ve ever seen.

His take-down of creationism and homeopathy and other bullshit science are Bill Hicks brilliant and Bill Hicks funny.

Oh, you know those “Obama as the Joker” posters that are going around? The ones that say “Socialist” underneath them? Well I think we should do our own posters. Let’s take conservative luminaries, Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, photoshop them so that they look like the joker and then put words underneath them. Words like “Dipshit” for Joe the Plumber “Deranged Quitter” under Palin or “Draft-Dodging Drug-Addict” under Limbaugh’s picture.

My weekly dose of anti-quackery comes via Ben Goldacre and his Bad Science column for the Guardian (just about the only thing worth reading in the Guardian anymore, other than the recipes).

Speaking of recipes, here’s what we’re having for lunch:

    Spinach and Blue Cheese Soup

    1 T olive oil, 1 tsp butter
1 medium onion, 1 celery stalk, minced fine
    3 cloves garlic, crushed
1/4 tsp white pepper, salt and black pepper to taste
6 oz white wine or juice of 1 lemon
    3 c. stock
    1 lb spinach leaves
    3 oz. blue cheese, crumbled

Heat the oil and the butter, then sautee the onion and celery until soft. Add the garlic, sautee 30-45 seconds, add salt, pepper, white pepper, wine, simmer until reduced by 1/3, add stock and spinach, simmer a further 10 minutes. Puree soup in blender until smooth, return to pot over low heat, stir in blue cheese until melted, about 3 minutes or so (don’t boil).

If you like it thicker, chop up a potato and put it in when you add the stock and spinach. Garnish with some fresh parsley, or dill, or chopped red onion.

Oh, that picture of Sam and Lily is just wonderful. Sweet little girlies all snuggled up on the couch after a long day of having fun and running around like lunatics.

After reading about politics, and then seeing those two, is it any wonder I like most dogs better than most people?

My moment was when tried on some gorgeous anicmal print shoes and they fit like a glove and my legs looked 10x longer and prettier than ever. Being 5’2″ it was an accomplishment. Felt special. Call me crazy…

Another moment was when I ate at an argentinian restaurant what they call: “panqueques de dulce de leche!” That is an anglicism for “pancakes or crepes” with Dulce de Leche. OMG! The dulce de leche and crepes were warm … unbelievable!

@Demo Woman: It was fabulous soup.

The little one is terrific. Five months old, eating solids, sitting up by herself, and shouting “Uh-BEH BEH BEH BEH DA!” at regular intervals. The cats love her, even when she grabs an ear or accidentally kicks them. She’s always happy, whether we are getting rained on during a hike or are trapped in an airplane for 8 hours or are surrounded by loud relatives. Also she sleeps a solid 8 hours a night.

We are SO going to pay when she’s 14.
