Had one of thos really great nights tonight. Brian is one of those guys who could cook in a 5 star restaurant, and dinner was just great, then we went to the basement and watched Planet Earth on Blu Ray. Sam and Lily had a great time, too:
Your moment of zen in an otherwise ugly world.
Church Lady
They look so sweet together.
General Winfield Stuck
That’s cute as can be. I see a budding doggie romance in the making.
Debbie(aussie)
A couple of beautiful doggies.
Genine
Awwww, that is so sweet!
mercurino
that sounds like a most weedilicious evening
Comrade Mary
@General Winfield Stuck: That’s what this blog needs: same sex pet romance!
General Winfield Stuck
@Comrade Mary:
So Sam is a girl? I didn’t know, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Batocchio
I’ve heard Planet Earth is stunning on Blu-Ray, but have also read that for some reason they didn’t put on the extras that come with the normal DVD set. Anyway, sounds fun.
You Don't Say
What a sweet photo. It’s wonderful that Lily likes other dogs. She might not given her background.
Anne Laurie
Awwww, the sweeties!
Thank you, Mr. Cole, for lowering my blood pressure.
Also, Planet Earth is wonderful in any incarnation, but the original Attenborough-narrated version is preferable to the Sigourney-Weaver-narrated “don’t use the ‘evolution’ word” BBC-America version. The first time I saw the Blu-Ray discs advertised, they were the Weaver version, unfortunately.
Steeplejack
@Anne Laurie:
Are you kidding me?! That’s the difference between the Attenborough and Weaver versions? Evolution? ZOMG.
ninerdave
Apropos of nothing, two things…
1) dickwhisperer has to be the all time best nick name for a journalist.
2) One of the more unfortunate last names I’ve every seen: Asplundh. Which reads (to me) Ass Plunder. I’ve seen their trucks recently around my work.
“Hey Ninerdave, what do you do for a living?”
“I work for Ass plundah.”
Of course I’m 40 going on 5….so maybe it’s only me that thinks it funny.
southpaw
I can’t see the picture. I haz a sad . . .
Linkmeister
@southpaw: Er, what you said. (Well, maybe not the “I haz a sad” part). I see no picture. Are the previous twelve comments all part of a plot to make us believe there is one?
Ha! You won’t fool me!
Nicole
Lovely weather in LA. Apparently it’s going to be 90 and rainy my first day back home. Yay. As in, not yay.
Chuck Butcher
Rocks practicing Zen, just cuz.
ninerdave
@ southpaw & linkmeister…
Are you running ad blockers? If so turn ’em off.
george
I’m a lurker. I appreciate the different views I get from reading the comments on this sight. However, I would still look in at times to see pictures of Tunch, Lily, and now, Sam, no matter what is exposed, because they always make my day at least a little bit brighter. Thanks!
ninerdave
@Chuck Butcher:
Wow. Beautiful
Rock
Also.
Blue Raven
Thanks for the tip, ninerdave. Just what I needed to see the sweetness.
Comrade Kevin
@Steeplejack: I don’t know if Anne is kidding, but I’m pretty sure she’s wrong. I would like to se some evidence, anyway.
Wile E. Quixote
@Anne Laurie
Blech! They cut the word “evolution” out because it would cause butt-hurt amongst the fundies and inelegant design twats? Like those fuckwits would be watching anything other than Fox.
Wile E. Quixote
Oh, and here is the most brilliant explanation of the theory of evolution (does that get capitalized?) I’ve ever heard (WARNING: I’ve only taken three years of biology in my life and that was in junior high and high school). I present Irish comedian Dara O’Briain, who I think is one of the funniest comedians I’ve ever seen.
His take-down of creationism and homeopathy and other bullshit science are Bill Hicks brilliant and Bill Hicks funny.
Wile E. Quixote
I like “Weird” Al Yankovic. And I like his original songs as much as his song parodies.
Wile E. Quixote
Oh, you know those “Obama as the Joker” posters that are going around? The ones that say “Socialist” underneath them? Well I think we should do our own posters. Let’s take conservative luminaries, Joe the Plumber, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, photoshop them so that they look like the joker and then put words underneath them. Words like “Dipshit” for Joe the Plumber “Deranged Quitter” under Palin or “Draft-Dodging Drug-Addict” under Limbaugh’s picture.

My weekly dose of anti-quackery comes via Ben Goldacre and his Bad Science column for the Guardian (just about the only thing worth reading in the Guardian anymore, other than the recipes).
Speaking of recipes, here’s what we’re having for lunch:
Spinach and Blue Cheese Soup
1 T olive oil, 1 tsp butter
1 medium onion, 1 celery stalk, minced fine
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1/4 tsp white pepper, salt and black pepper to taste
6 oz white wine or juice of 1 lemon
3 c. stock
1 lb spinach leaves
3 oz. blue cheese, crumbled
Heat the oil and the butter, then sautee the onion and celery until soft. Add the garlic, sautee 30-45 seconds, add salt, pepper, white pepper, wine, simmer until reduced by 1/3, add stock and spinach, simmer a further 10 minutes. Puree soup in blender until smooth, return to pot over low heat, stir in blue cheese until melted, about 3 minutes or so (don’t boil).
If you like it thicker, chop up a potato and put it in when you add the stock and spinach. Garnish with some fresh parsley, or dill, or chopped red onion.
RedKitten
Oh, that picture of Sam and Lily is just wonderful. Sweet little girlies all snuggled up on the couch after a long day of having fun and running around like lunatics.
After reading about politics, and then seeing those two, is it any wonder I like most dogs better than most people?
Shakira Botello
My moment was when tried on some gorgeous anicmal print shoes and they fit like a glove and my legs looked 10x longer and prettier than ever. Being 5’2″ it was an accomplishment. Felt special. Call me crazy…
Another moment was when I ate at an argentinian restaurant what they call: “panqueques de dulce de leche!” That is an anglicism for “pancakes or crepes” with Dulce de Leche. OMG! The dulce de leche and crepes were warm … unbelievable!
asiangrrlMN
Happy sigh. Seeing Lily so happy is as satisfying early in the morning as it is late at night. I love this pic of Lily and Sam. It does my heart good.
Maxwel
Strange. Adblock was blocking the photo of the dogs. I couldn’t figure why.
Demo Woman
@R-Jud: That sounds so good. How’s your little one?
Lily and Sam BFF’s
anthony
3 stars not enough for you Americans? ; )
burnspbesq
@Wile E. Quixote:
Thanks for that. Brilliant!
I shall patiently await my opportunity to respond to BOB or one of our new trolls with “I’m sorry, get in the fookin’ sack.”
Betsy
V. strange, adblock doesn’t usually deprive me of pet pics. This is an unhappy development. But at least ninerdave told me what the problem was so that I could remedy it.
Happy happy cute dogs!!!
R-Jud
@Demo Woman: It was fabulous soup.
The little one is terrific. Five months old, eating solids, sitting up by herself, and shouting “Uh-BEH BEH BEH BEH DA!” at regular intervals. The cats love her, even when she grabs an ear or accidentally kicks them. She’s always happy, whether we are getting rained on during a hike or are trapped in an airplane for 8 hours or are surrounded by loud relatives. Also she sleeps a solid 8 hours a night.
We are SO going to pay when she’s 14.
Pics etc. if you click my username.
Demo Woman
@R-Jud: Rather than nag my sons about getting married and starting a family, I’ll just click on your site. It’s like being an internet gramma. She is so adorable and your site is great. Your family must love the updates.
Violet
They’re so sweet. Thanks for the picture. I know I’m late to the party, but thanks for making my morning.
Ash
So, does anyone know if the internet is having a massive meltdown or something? Half of my normal websites are down or not functioning properly.
I hope the terrorists don’t win.
R-Jud
@Demo Woman: They do love the updates; we’re a large, but loosely distributed clan. They claim I don’t update enough, though, which is true.
And she IS adorable. If it weren’t for the fact that she definitely has Mr Jud’s eyes, I would suspect she was a changeling.
Comrade Darkness
Merlin, is that a Yorkie in the pic? Lily is one small dog. Not that that’s a bad thing, just keep getting surprised by it in the pics.
How is Lily’s talking going, by the way? Is she doing more of it?
Comrade Darkness
@R-Jud: Cute. I see you didn’t skimp on ‘extra hair’ when you put in the order for her.
Comrade Darkness
@Wile E. Quixote: Better for Palin would be Palin: 2012 to 2013 1/2
Church Lady
@R-Jud: Bean is just precious. I just love how big her eyes are. Lord, I look forward to the day when our daughter (preferably married) has a child. I think I’ll make a pretty cool grandma.
R-Jud
Aww, thanks, Comrade Darkness and Church Lady.
CL, my mom seems to be having fun being the “cool grandma” (Mr. Jud’s mom is the Proper British Grandma, which is adorable in its own way). She was there for the big event– she actually wound up being the first person to meet the Bean– and I think I would’ve melted down without her.
Lesley
SO GLAD I SCROLLED DOWN AWAYS TODAY!
Total adorability right there.
Steeplejack
@R-Jud:
Gorgeous bebé! Let’s see some video of her interacting with the cats.
