Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I really should read my own blog.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

The willow is too close to the house.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Come on, man.

“woke” is the new caravan.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

I’m going to be googling “Joe Wilson for president” regularly the next few weeks. I think Bruce Bartlett is right (via Kevin Drum via Sully):

No doubt, right wing publishers like Regnery and Crown will be beating down Wilson’s door today to sign a book deal that will put him at the top of the New York Times bestseller list along with drivel from the likes of Michelle Malkin, who has probably already started writing her biography of Wilson, titled, “The Man Who Spoke the Truth.” By the end of the day a Wilson for President web site will be fully functioning if it isn’t already. Watch for the announcement on Glenn Beck’s show this afternoon.

ron reagan jr just had a very good appearance on hardball talking about the wilson behavior; stressing how this was far and beyond the goofball behavior we’ve grown to expect at those sessions — the competitive ovations; shoe shuffling. this was something different and very likely with a racist angle to it. and very troubling.

I’ve been thinking about whether Wilson should be censured or not, and the more I think about it, the more I think, yes.

Pelosi has already said that she’s against censure; she doesn’t want to waste any more time on Wilson. If that were the extent of it, I’d agree. I really don’t care if Wilson gets punished or not — except by his constituents.

But I do care about the example it sets. The House actually has decorum rules, and if Wilson’s behavior leaves no mark on his congressional record, then Republicans will feel free to behave just as badly and worse during Obama’s speeches over the rest of his presidency. Let this go, and at the State of the Union in February/March, it’ll be a fucking choir of Republicans interrupting Obama’s address.

So I think they need to go through with censure, despite it being an otherwise waste of time.

I just watched clips on NBC and CBS news. CBS did not point out that the law actually says undocumented workers will not be covered but did show both last nights and CSpan’s clip that indicates Wilson might have an anger problem. NBC corrected Wilson’s lie but had Joe Scarborough saying how he was surprised that such a mild mannered guy could get angry.
Wilson lied. He did not say that he was concerned about loop holes and that he wanted the loop holes closed. He said that Obama lied which he did not.

Wilson is the one who was truthful, as the President was lying. The Republican amendment to explicitly exclude illegal aliens from health benefits was voted down and the bill would most surely transfer health resources from old people to illegal aliens, as Emmanuel’s formula only considers age, not IQ, although both are solid metrics of a Citizen’s value to the State.

Not only is Wilson truthful, but he has not bitten off any fingers of his political opponents, has not likely done crack cocaine, had felons provide him with discount housing in exchange for political favors, or accepted a doubling of his wife’s tribute upon taking office. Wilson would thus make an acceptable President.

All we can really ask of our elected officials is to be honest with us at this stage of history. Sarah Palin might not be very sharp, but she is a credit to her gender, and has also not appeared to lie to the American people. Sarah would make for a good Vice President.

I bet Glenn Beck is the next President though. He has come up with a common-sense political platform.

I also think there are more demonstrably crazy supporters of the Republican non-plan than there are of any Obama plan. (2) Obama is apparently “likely” to have done crack. Because he hung out with radical hippies? What’s the measure of “likelihood” here, like probability numbers or something. Unless of course you’re using insinuation as a measure of truthiness. (3) And exactly what was the “tribute”that was doubled and that he should have refused? That one has me completely flummoxed.

AhabTRuler makes his pizza in a Pyrex dish. This is very bad. The key to a good pizza is an instantly hot base upon which to place the crust. It makes things light, moist, and crispy.

    Stop whining about your equipment!

Go buy a stinking $8 pizza stone, a $6 pizza peel, and some corn meal for a lubricant between the pizza peel and the fresh dough. Heat up the oven and stone to 500F, exercise the lubricated interface by shifting the dough with a little back and forth with the peel handle, and then add toppings, and slosh the pizza onto the stone.

This will be a much improved pizza. It takes minutes for the Pyrex to come to temperature, resulting in a crappy, soggy crust, much like Joe Wilson’s inadequate protest.

I didn’t write the word “entrepenour”. That is a bald-face lie and by that I mean clean shaven.

Also, “jive honky” gets me in moderation! Who’s in charge, Archie Bunker?

@Brick Oven Bill: Go buy a stinking $8 pizza stone, a $6 pizza peel, and some corn meal for a lubricant between the pizza peel and the fresh dough. Heat up the oven and stone to 500F, exercise the lubricated interface by shifting the dough with a little back and forth with the peel handle, and then add toppings, and slosh the pizza onto the stone.

I’ll heartily second BoB here. I’ll also add that our $60 breadman bread machine has a pizza dough setting that turns out perfect dough in about the time it takes to prep the rest of the ingredients. Our incredibly picky Southern Italian guests even love our pizza.

Roll the crust out thin and keep the toppings a little restrained and you too can bake like they do in Napoli. (Go with the canned plum tomatoes.)

Just FYI, Quinoa will work instead of corn meal if you have issues with corn.

I just wanted to know what would prompt a person to call a bunch of multicultural, bleeding heart liberal nanny staters, skinheads.

Being a multiculti bleeding heart liberal nanny stater does not give one a pass on using racially charged terms. Thus, skinheads.

    @Makewi:

So identifying racists by calling racists by allegedly racist epitaths, ie Crackers is racist in and of itself. Brilliant dude,

Congrats! You just won today’s wingnut logic prize.

There is no indication that Wilson is a racist. So, maybe you should keep that prize for yourself.

    @Makewi:

First off I don’t agree and most don’t that “cracker” is a racist term. I was born in cracker land, and many there use it themselves as being a cultural term of southern heritage and country attitude. Some crackers are racist, most not.

So you are just ill informed. Though sometimes belonging to neo confederate groups can certainly be an indication of racist leanings.

The rest of you nonsense is just that. nonsense. Having no rational meaning. No more time will I waste on you, rube troll.

I bet Glenn Beck is the next President though. He has come up with a common-sense political platform.

Would that be the same Glenn Beck who raped and murdered raped and murdered a young girl in 1990?. It makes sense that he’d want to become president, if he did he could issue himself a pardon.

Call someone a cracker in Florida and you’re going to be up against it with a hate crime.

I had no idea you were just a fan of hate speech laws.

There is no indication that Wilson is a racist. So, maybe you should keep that prize for yourself.

So let me see, according to you and your buddies in the wingnut-o-sphere Barack Obama is an Islamic radical racist because he went to school in Kenya, served in a committee with a former member of the Weather Underground, Bill Ayers, and went to Jeremiah Wright’s church; however even though Joe Wilson

is a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, a group which is on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch List
Attacked Strom Thurmond’s black daughter, Essie Mae Williams, for revealing that Thurmond was her father
was the protege of racist Republican congressman Floyd Spence, who left the Democratic party in 1962 because of civil rights and who had Lee Atwater attack one of his opponents as a member of the NAACP.

doesn’t indicate that Joe Wilson’s a racist. Next up from Makewi: a spirited defense of Larry Craig’s heterosexuality in which he will accuse anyone who doesn’t believe that Larry just has a wide stance of being a gay-basher.

    @Wile E. Quixote:

Not to forget that he was an aide to Strom Thurmond, who left the Democratic party and ran for president to oppose the *Truman* civil rights bill (that is: he couldn’t stomach things like desegregating the armed services). Y’know, the guy who said: “There’s not enough troops in the Army to break down segregation and admit the Negro into our homes, our eating places, our swimming pools and our theaters.'”
